James Iver Petersen

James Iver Petersen, PE, 75, of Ayampe, Ecuador, and Perryville, Maryland, passed away on February 1, 2018. He was the husband of Beverly (Schafer) Petersen, with whom he celebrated 55 years of marriage. Jim was born in Kenosha, WI. He will truly be missed by all who shared his love for Jesus, structural engineering, photography, the written word, art expression, publishing, and dry humor. Jim showed deep love and loyalty for his family, coworkers, neighbors, and friends, having gifted them with his personalized expressions.

Surviving in addition to his wife, son: David J. (Julie) Petersen. Daughters: Tamara L. Petersen; and Inger Petersen (Rich) Carle. Four grandchildren. One great-grandchild. Sister: Kathee Jennings. Nieces and extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents and one grandson.

Richard T. Hollen

Richard T. Hollen, 80 of Woodcrest Villa formerly a long time resident of Mountville passed away on Sunday, July 22, 2018 at Lancaster General Hospital. He was the husband of Patsy Lou Hollen who passed away on July 16, 1994.  He was born in Barnesboro, PA, son of the late Richard T. and Rebecca Hicks Hollen. Richard was an accountant for ITT Grinnell Corporation, Columbia for over 30 years. Richard was most recently a member of Faith Bible Fellowship Church, enjoyed bowling at Leisure Lanes and spending time walking his dog, “Star”. While residing in Mountville, Richard was a member of the Lions Club, a social member of Reese-Hall VFW Post #8757, a 32nd degree Mason, served on the Mountville Borough Council, was Treasurer and President of the Hempfield School Board, and was President of the Vo Tech Board.  

He is survived by his son, Matthew and his wife Lisa Hollen who live in Coppell, TX.  He has two granddaughters. He is also survived by his two brothers Jim and Charley and sister Shirley and was pre-deceased by his brother Russ.

Paul C. Weibley

Paul C. Weibley, Jr., 71, of Manheim, passed away on Saturday, July 28, 2018. He was the husband of Roberta L. Bartley Weibley with whom he would have celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary on September 30, 2018. He was born in Columbia, son of the late Paul C., Sr. and Dorothy J. Nissley Weibley. Paul was a veteran of the US Army, serving during the Vietnam War. 

Surviving in addition to his wife, two daughters: Paula S. Weibley; and Darla E. (Wayne E.) Jamison. Two sons: Paul C. Weibley, III (Alicia M. Eshelman); and Jason M. (Sandy L.) Weibley. Twelve grandchildren. Fifteen great-grandchildren. One brother: Randy Weibley. Four sisters: Kathy Baker; Cindy Anderson; Karen Reichard; and Lisa Sharpe. He was preceded in death by two brothers: Steve and Larry Weibley.

Ronald H. Cresswell

Ronald H. Cresswell, 85, of Lancaster, passed away on Thursday, July 19, 2018. He was born in Pottsville, son of the late George R. and Rachael Myers Cresswell. He was a Tool and Die maker, having worked for New Holland Machine Company and DeWalt Company, and retired from New Standard. He was a veteran of the US Army, serving during the Korean Conflict.

He is survived by one brother: Thomas G. Cresswell, Lancaster and one sister Edith M. Meckley, Florida. Also, nieces and nephews.

Robert G. Miller

Robert G. Miller, a distinguished World War II veteran, writer, photographer, outdoorsman, history buff, and lifelong resident of the Columbia area, died on Wednesday, July 18, at St. Anne’s Retirement Community, his daughter Cynthia at his side. He was 96 years of age.

Born in Columbia, son of the late Margaret Miller Crumbling, Bob’s life spanned nearly a century of devoted service to country and community.

A 1938 graduate of Holy Trinity High School and a longtime member of St. Peter Roman Catholic Church, Columbia, he worked briefly for Lancaster Newspapers before heading off to the war. Bob served in WWII from 1942-1945 as a photographer and lab technician with the 27th Photographic Reconnaissance Squadron, stationed with the US Army Air Force in England. The squadron was part of the 7th Photographic Reconnaissance Group, which was awarded a Distinguished Unit Citation for its photo sorties over the Normandy coast, described as a “a crucial part of the preparation for the land invasion that began on 6 June 1944 [D-Day].” 

After the war, Bob returned to Columbia, met and married Florence Jelley, the love of his life; they were married for 63 years before her death in 2009. After successfully pursuing Florence, Bob pursued consecutive 20-year careers as a writer and photographer, first with Lancaster Newspapers and then with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. 

From 1947 to 1967, he worked as a reporter, County Editor, and photographer for the Intelligencer Journal. He also wrote a regular boating column for the sports pages, a natural given his familiarity with, and love for, the Susquehanna River (he built cottages on islands in that stream). From 1967 until his retirement in 1987, he was an information specialist with the State Department of Forests and Waters, which morphed into the Department of Environmental Resources in the early 1970's. He worked under the renowned Secretary Maurice Goddard. 

In addition, Bob wrote and took photos for The Columbia News and various magazines, including Pennsylvania Magazine, Pennsylvania Forests, Pennsylvania Angler, and Outboard.  He was a member of the Pennsylvania Outdoor Writers Association. 

In 1975 one of his photographs, showing the hands of a child and an adult planting a seedling, received a national award from the Keep America Beautiful program at an awards ceremony in Washington, DC.  

Bob is probably best known in town for everything he and Florence did after he retired to nurture and sustain the Columbia Historic Preservation Society and its Museum on South Second Street. The Museum is housed in a former church; the manse next door, also part of the historic society complex, was named the Miller Manse in their honor in 2013. Into his late 80's and early 90's, Bob remained active in the Historical Society and served as its Recording Secretary and institutional memory.

In honor of their community work, the Millers were chosen in 1997 to serve as Grand Marshals of the Columbia Mardi Gras parade. In 2015, in recognition of his service to his country, Bob was the Grand Marshal of the Columbia Memorial Day parade and proudly wore his military jacket.

He is survived by his daughter Cynthia Miller Forster (Jeff) of New Milford, NJ; loving granddaughters Meredith L. Forster of Arlington, VA and Hilary Forster Bruck (Jonathan) of Alexandria, VA; brother Donald Crumbling (Lois) of York; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Richard Crumbling.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Peter Roman Catholic Church, 121 S. Second St., Columbia, on Monday, July 23, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. with Rev. Anthony Swamy, MSFS, as Celebrant. Samuel A. Miller

Samuel A. Miller, 78, of Columbia, passed away on Thursday, July 12, 2018. He was the husband of Karen E. Beavens Miller with whom he celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary on March 19, 2018. He was born in West Hempfield Township, son of the late Albert S. and Elsie Ober Miller. Sam worked as a mechanic for Interstate Trucking Co. and also for Sahd Salvage before his retirement. He enjoyed cooking and the outdoors, including hunting and fishing.

Surviving in addition to his wife, five sons: Albert S. (Kathy) Miller; Marlin L. (Jane) Miller; Leroy G. Miller; Brian K. (Lori) Miller; and Samuel A. Miller, Jr. Eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. One sister: Fannie (Charles) Brommer. He was preceded in death by one brother: Raymond Miller.

Rowan Blake "Ro" Taylor

 
Rowan Blake "Ro" Taylor, 9 month old daughter of Justin B. Taylor and Ashlyn Kitch of Lancaster, passed away on Monday, July 9, 2018 in the arms of her parents, at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Even though only 9 months old, she had prominent and beautiful eyes that matched her personality. Although she was young, Rowan had an “old soul” that everyone adored. She was patient, loving, intuitive, and she had a fighting spirit from the moment that she entered this world until the day she left. Despite being a twin to Jase, and a younger sister to Haidyn, she always had a sense of independence. She was confident and strong, and there was never any doubt in her will to fight. In Rowan’s short amount of time with us, she managed to touch so many lives. Her Go-fund-me, “A Rainbow for Rowan”, is fitting to her essence because of her bright outlook throughout her life. Timothy A. Manuel

Timothy A. Manuel, 28, of Red Lion, passed away on Monday, July 2, 2018 at home. He was born in Columbia, son of Albert R., Sr. and Betty J. Snyder Manuel. He worked as an apprentice machinist at Elw Manufacturing. He was a graduate of Red Lion High School (2007) and he enjoyed motorcycles, four wheelers, Jeeps, dogs, and he loved the great outdoors.

Surviving in addition to his parents, two brothers: Albert R. Manuel, Jr.; and Charles H. Manuel. One sister: Joyce A. Manuel, all of Red Lion. Also, many aunts and uncles.

Kenneth R. Carpenter

Kenneth R. Carpenter, 76, of Rheems, formerly of Mountville, passed away on Wednesday, June 27, 2018 at Elizabethtown Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. He was born in New Haven, CT, son of the late Leslie G., Sr. and Anna J. Clinton Carpenter. Ken was a banker for 39 years, having worked for Fulton Bank for 36 years in Branch Administration, and 3 years for Union Community National Bank before his retirement. He was also a school bus driver for Hempfield School District for 10 years. He was a member of St. Leo the Great Catholic Church. Ken was a graduate of JP McCaskey High School, (1959); graduate of the Stonier School of Banking, Rutgers University (1974), the American Bankers School of Commercial Lending, of the University of Oklahoma (1976). He was an instructor for twenty years, the Director of Education for 54 years and served as President (1984-85)at the Lancaster Chapter of the American Institute of Banking. He was a presenter at the American Bankers Association National Convention in Washington, DC (1983), and Los Angeles, CA (1984). Ken was an ASA Softball umpire for 20 years; president of the Red Rose Softball Umpires Association for 6 years; he umpired in 4 National Tournaments; and he was inducted into the umpire section of the ASA Hall of Fame, Oklahoma City (1986).

He is survived by several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by siblings: Jean Page, Joan A. Carpenter, and Leslie C. Carpenter, Jr.

Helen E. Metzger

Helen Evelyn Metzger, 93, of Woodcrest Villa, formerly of Columbia, passed away on Thursday, June 28, 2018 at the Mennonite Home with her daughters by her side, holding her hands. She is now reunited with her beloved Johnny. She was born in Wayne, Alberta, Canada daughter of the late John and Eva Tancowny Balash and her family soon moved to Edmonton, Alberta, Canada where she was raised. She was the wife of John P. Metzger for 54 years before he passed away in 1999. Helen worked at a variety of jobs, starting at a very early age, but will be most remembered by her employment at the Columbia Public Library, the Sherwood Knoll Restaurant Dining Room, as a manager, the State of Pennsylvania, and her last “fun” job giving out store samples for demo-works. She also enjoyed volunteering in her daughter’s school as a chaperone for school trips and the Girl Scouts. Helen was a highly creative woman and enjoyed gardening, sewing, baking, and being involved in her children’s and grandchildren’s activities. Helen and Jonny enjoyed traveling by car, bus and train all over the US and Western Canada to visit family. They also enjoyed going on cruises and bus trips.

She is survived by her daughters: Sharon L. (Kim) Lehr, Columbia and Dianne M. (Craig) Roda, Lancaster. Five grandchildren: Nicole (Sean) Campbell; Mark (Ann) Roda; Stephanie (Todd) Rogers; Christopher (Jamie) Roda; and Brandon Roda. Five great-granddaughters: Emmelee and Adelyn Campbell; Claire, Grace, and Katherine Roda. Sister-in-law: Shirley Balash, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one sister: Mary (Eugene) Plawiuk, and three brothers: Nick (Barbara) Balash; Paul Balash; and Alex (Gail) Balash.

Fay F. McKonly

Fay F. McKonly, 92, of West Hempfield Township, passed away on Monday, June 25, 2018 at home. She was the wife of John H. McKonly to whom she was married for 53 years before he passed away on September 7, 2003. She was born in West Hempfield Twp., daughter of the late Daniel H. and Esther Seitz Fisher. She was employed by Hamilton Watch Co. and Mountville Wallpaper Factory as a secretary. She also worked as a bookkeeper for John H. McKonly’s Garage. Fay was a graduate of East Hempfield High School, Class of 1943 and a Charter member of Hempfield United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School for many years and faithfully attended worship. Fay enjoyed traveling, gardening, and feeding her family. She extended a standing invitation for Thursday night chicken dinner to anyone who wanted to come, and continued with her husband John’s tradition of taking the family to breakfast every Saturday at the Silver Spring Family Restaurant. She said her hobby was going for groceries, shopping at several stores, and Roots Market weekly for their specials. Fay had a wonderful wit, enjoyed her family, and loved keeping up with her daughters’ and grandchildren’s interests. She kept active with aqua aerobics and gentle yoga. She enjoyed living in the home that she and John built in 1951 on land given by her parents. She especially liked planting flowers, shrubs and trees.

She is survived by five daughters: Melinda L. McKonly, Manheim; Cynthia (Thomas) Kahler, Columbia; Judith (Bruce) Freidly, Manheim; Kathleen (Christine Macready) Brown, West Hempfield Twp.; and Kimberly (John) Cooper, Plymouth Meeting. Three grandchildren: Erin Farmer, Jonathan Kahler, and Jessica Freidly. Four great-grandchildren: Maeve Kahler, Lucy Kahler, Dylan Kahler, and Hannah Farmer. Five siblings: Joyce (Leonard) Droege; Margaret (John) Brown; Jacqulyn McKonly; Jennifer (James) Meley; and Holly (Joseph) Mele. She was preceded in death by one grandson: Colin T. Kahler, and six siblings: June Fisher; Daniel H. Fisher, III; Mary Kauffman; James Fisher; Eugene Fisher; and Janice Metzger.

Clayton H. Derstler

Clayton H. Derstler, 100, of Washington Boro, passed away on Wednesday, June 20, 2018 at home. He was the husband of the late Ida K. Hess Derstler to whom he was married for 63 years before she passed away in 2001. He was born in Columbia, son of the late Clayton N. and Myrtle Harms Derstler. Clayton was a mechanic and farmer having worked for Ed Froelich, Nissley Farm Service, and the Frey Dairy Farms. He was the oldest person associated with Central Manor Church of God, and enjoyed hunting, tinkering in the shop, gardening, reading his Bible and studying Prophecy. He was a member of the Antique Motorcycle Club, and was an avid sportsman.

He is survived by the Mike and Nancy Nissly family, Washington Boro. Clayton was preceded in death by one daughter: Mary Derstler, and one brother: Kenneth Derstler.

James R. Zerphy

James R. Zerphy, 90, of West Hempfield Township, passed away on Monday, June 18, 2018 at home, surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of the late Pauline R. Zerphy, who passed away in 2013. He was born in Lancaster, son of the late Floyd and Mildred Brunner Zerphy. He did shipping/receiving for Armstrong World Industries for 35 years before his retirement. James was a veteran of the US Army who loved the outdoors, his animals, the Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles, and all racing.

He is survived by four daughters: Kathleen (Edward) Bachman; Cheryl LaBow; Dawn Murr; and Tamela Zerphy. Eight grandchildren. Eighteen great-grandchildren. Two great-great-grandchildren. One brother: Thomas (Terry) Zerphy. One sister: Sally Williams. He was preceded in death by four children and one brother: Peter Zerphy.

Ada W. Lindemuth

Ada W. Lindemuth, 91, of Mountville, passed away on Saturday, June 16, 2018 at Hospice and Community Care, Mount Joy. She was the wife of the late Leroy S. Lindemuth who passed away in October of 1993. She was born in Marietta, daughter of the late William and Ada Greenawalt Westenhoeffer. She worked in the office of JC Snavely & Sons, Inc., Lancaster before her retirement. She was a graduate of Marietta High School, Class of 1944; a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Lancaster; Eastern Star Chapter #366; was involved in Job’s Daughters Grand Council for many years; was an avid Penn State fan, having been a season ticket holder for many years, and attended many bowl games. Ada enjoyed going to her cabin in the mountains and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-granddaughter.

She is survived by one son: Philip L. (Julie) Lindemuth, Huntingdon. Four grandchildren: Danielle Lindemuth, Philip N. (Chelsea Quinn) Lindemuth, Jared and Joshua King. Three great-grandchildren: Skyler, Kayla, and Charlotte. Son-in-law: Tracy King, Mountville. She was preceded in death by one daughter: L. Adele King. One brother: William Westenhoeffer.

Anne M. (Dickey) Hynicka

Anne M. (Dickey) Hynicka, 93, a resident of the Mennonite Home Retirement Community, her home away from home, and previously resided on Orchard Way, Mountville, passed away on Friday, June 15, 2018. She was born in Berlin, daughter of the late R. Earl and Elizabeth Tressler Dickey, of Berlin. Anne was the wife of the late Richard H. Hynicka, for 65 years before he passed away. She graduated from Berlin Brothersvalley High School and was employed at Chatham College, Pittsburgh and later at RCA Corp. Anne was an active member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Mountville, serving in the Sunday School and was an advisor to Junior and Senior High age groups. She was also a Den Mother for the Cub Scouts of America. Give her fabric, sewing machine, needle and thread, yarn, knitting needles, or a crochet hook and she was happy and content.

She is survived by three sons: Robert R. Hynicka, Taylors, SC; Rev. Robin M. Hynicka, Philadelphia; and Steven F. Hynicka, Mountville. Anne was “Grammie” to seven grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by, one brother: Robert Earl Dickey and two sisters: Ruth (Dickey) Azner and Miriam (Dickey) Pierce.

Arthur W. "Bill" Shenberger

Arthur W. “Bill” Shenberger, 73, of Henryetta, OK, formerly of Manor Township, passed away unexpectedly, on Tuesday, May 22, 2018 in Jonesboro, AR. He was the husband of Donna Shenberger. He was born in Lancaster, son of the late Arthur R. and Mary J. Kline Shenberger. He was a graduate of Penn Manor High School; was of the Catholic faith; and was a veteran of the US Navy, serving 28 years. He enjoyed hunting and watching the Weather Channel. Bill was a member of the Gold Wing Club and a CB Club with his handle being “Polar Bear”.

Surviving in addition to his wife, two sons: Arthur W. Shenberger and Ronald A. Shenberger, of Colorado Springs, CO. One grandson: Bryan A. Shenberger, Colorado Springs, CO. Two step-children: Kathy Thomas, Alabama; and Jimmy Thomas, Rheems. One brother: David E. Shenberger, Columbia. Two sisters: Sharon E. Pyfer, Columbia, and Jennifer M. (Donald) Cox, Dagsburg, DE. Nephews: David R. Shenberger; Ronald R. Pyfer; and Christopher Pyfer, all of Columbia; Donald Cox, Florida, and Troy Cox, Bedford. One niece: Lisa Pyfer, Columbia. He was preceded in death by his grandparents: Mr. and Mrs. Arthur S. Shenberger; and Mr. and Mrs. William T. Kline. Sister-in-law: Dorothy Shenberger. Brother-in-law: Ronald Pyfer.

Nancy C. "Brandy" Getz

Nancy C. “Brandy” Getz, 74, of Columbia, passed away on Wednesday, May 30, 2018 at Lancaster General Hospital, following a brief illness. She was the wife of John I. Getz, with whom she celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary on August 19, 2017. She was born in Lancaster, daughter of the late Victor P. and Regina M. Anthony Mehaffey. Brandy was the snack bar operator/supervisor at the Clover Store, Lancaster and also worked at the Rising Sun Hotel. She was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and the 300 Club; and the Susquehanna Fire Company (Hambones). She enjoyed going to the VFW for Dinner, playing cards, going to the mountains, Neil Diamond Music, and craft shows.

Surviving in addition to her husband, three daughters: Kelly J. Shelton, wife of Kim J., Cameron, NC; Stacy L. Rutter, wife of Robert J., Mount Joy; and Nicole M. Stoner, wife of Ryan J., Hellam Twp. One grandson: Robert A. “Bobby” Rutter, husband of Heather. Two grandchildren: Conner M. and Skylar G. Three siblings: Joann Hiemenz, Phyllis Letavic, and Michael Mehaffey, all of Lancaster.

The Funeral Service will be held at the Workman Funeral Homes, Inc., 31 South Eighth Street, Columbia, on Monday, June 4, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. with Rev. Stephen P. Kelley, officiating. Susan T. Stover

Susan T. Stover, 60, of Landisville, passed away on Monday, May 21, 2018. She was the wife of the late George E. Stover, who passed away on December 23, 2007. She was born in Portsmouth, VA, daughter of the late Elton D. and Sadie King Taylor. Susan was an accountant/counselor for the Virginia Department of Mental Health for twenty years before her retirement. She attended Burning Hearts Community Church, was a member of the Pilot Club of Central PA, and was involved with Project Linus for five years, making blankets for children with illnesses, or involved in disaster events.

She is survived by one son: Matthew D. Taylor. Two sisters and one brother. She was preceded in death by one son: Benjamin A. Taylor, and one brother.

The Memorial Service will be held at Zion Church of Millersville, 317 N. George Street, Millersville on Saturday, May 26, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. with visitation from 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. Rhonda G. Rineer

Rhonda G. Rineer, 52, of Conestoga, passed away on Monday, May 21, 2018. She was born in Lancaster, daughter of Jill A. Dawson Rineer, Conestoga and the late Ronald E. Rineer. Rhonda graduated from Penn Manor High School, Class of 1984 and the Millersville University, with Honors, Class of 1992. She was a school teacher for the School District of Lancaster for 26 years (most recently at Hamilton Elementary), and was dedicated to her students, considering them as her own. She attended Live with Purpose Church and enjoyed animals, especially her dog “Roxy”, family, and her plants. She loved gardening, crafting, and was a very avid reader.

Surviving in addition to her mother, one brother: Mark E. (Randa) Rineer, Topsham, ME. One sister: Tarissa A. Rineer Moyer, Lititz. Five nieces and nephews: Alex, Bret, Addison, Mira, and Camden, and other family members. She was preceded in death by one niece: Isabel.

The Memorial Service will be held at the Workman Funeral Homes, Inc., 114 West Main Street, Mountville, on Friday at 6:30 P.M. with Visitation from 5:30 P.M. to 6:30 P.M. Gayle W. Kline

Gayle W. Kline, 84, of Mountville, and Duck Key, FL, passed away on Wednesday, May 16, 2018 in Lancaster. He was born in Mill Hall, PA, son of the late John O. and Lila Mae Yearick Kline. He played football in high school for Lock Haven Senior High, #18, Class of 1951. Gayle served in the US Navy as an Aviation Electrician’s Mate, 3rd Class; Fleet Aircraft Services Squadron (Fasron) 9, Cecil Field, Jacksonville, FL. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Arts and Drafting from Millersville University in 1962. 

Gayle Kline RV Center was established in 1963, in Mountville. The dealership grew from ½ acre to 13 acres and celebrated its 55th year anniversary, this spring. The business grew constant over time, selling many RV Brands including Foretravel Motorhome, of which he was the last independent dealer. Upon retiring in 2001, he turned the business over to his two sons.

He was an active member of the Family Motor Coach Association (FMCA), Capital Chapter, Penn Coachman, Chesapeake Allegro, Gold Coast Allegro, Zembo Temple, Columbia Lodge #286 F&AM. Gayle served on the Mountville Boro Council and was a member of the Mountville Lions Club for many years.

He is survived by his wife Billie L. Kline and three children: Terry Kline, Gayle (Larry) Smith, and Jeff (Wendy) Kline, all of Lancaster. One sister: Donna (Earle) Robinson, Mifflintown. Seven grandchildren: Courtney Kline, Andrea Kline, Kristina Smith, Amanda (Scott) Cunningham, Ryan (Rachel) Kline, Derek Kline, and Tyler Kline. Two great-grandchildren: Peyton Cunningham, and Avery Cunningham. He was preceded in death by his first wife: Shirley Teaman Kline in 1985.

He will be missed by many, many RV friends, business associates and his extended Daugherty family.

A Graveside Service and Interment will be held in Mountville Cemetery following the calling hours.
