Eli David Watkins

Eli David Watkins, was born on Thursday, November 8, 2018 at 10:25 A.M. Though he did not survive birth, he was surrounded by family who loved him deeply.

He is survived by his parents Clint and Jillian Watkins. Paternal grandparents: Mark A. and Sharon J. Watkins. Maternal grandparents: Donald L. and Sharon L. Neff. Paternal great-grandmothers: Jo Ann Watkins and Elvina Janzen. Maternal great-grandmother: Loretta Kauffman.

Mary Jane Swarr

Mary Jane Swarr, 83, of Juniper Village, Mount Joy, passed away on Wednesday, November 21, 2018 at Hospice and Community Care. She was the wife of John R. Swarr, with whom she celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary on August 2, 2018. She was born in Columbia, daughter of the late Curvin Tome I, and the late Mary King Peters. Mary Jane was a bus driver and cook for Head Start, Columbia for 26 years before her retirement. She was a member of Columbia United Methodist Church and their choir. She was a very good and avid bowler and she also enjoyed playing cards, including poker; going to the mountains; and spending time with her family.

Surviving in addition to her husband, one daughter: Kathy A. (Keith)Hoffman, Manheim. Two sons: John M. (Dora) Swarr, Columbia and Mark L. (Krista J.) Swarr, York. One granddaughter: Madison Jane Swarr. One brother: Curvin Tome II, Bainbridge. She was preceded in death by one sister: Elizabeth Buser.

Raymond W. Burkholder

Raymond W. Burkholder, 83, of Washington Boro, went to be with his Lord and Savior, peacefully at home on Wednesday, November 14, 2018, surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Lois Bowman Burkholder, with whom he celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary on October 20, 2018. He was born in Clay Twp., son of the late John H. and Mary Wenger Burkholder. Raymond attended Faith Bible Fellowship Church. He was a lifelong farmer and enjoyed gardening, hunting, skiing, and Bluegrass music. He also loved taking his family to the beach and the cabin in Potter County.

Surviving in addition to his wife, his children: Robert (Sallie) Burkholder; Dana (Mark) Smith; Joyce (Richard) Funk; and Judy (Lewis) Witmer, all of Manor Twp. Fourteen grandchildren, and sixteen great-grandchildren. Siblings: Paul Burkholder, Ruth Breneman, Clyde Burkholder, Ezra Burkholder, Jean Zimmerman-Alvisi, and Glenn (Phoebe) Burkholder.

Nathan Mark “Nate” Beiler

Nathan Mark “Nate” Beiler, 27, of Lancaster, passed away on Tuesday, November 13, 2018. He was born in Lancaster, son of Larry L. and Terri L. Bauman Beiler, Manheim. He was an accountant for S. Clyde Weaver for the past six years. Nate was a graduate of Manheim Central High School, Class of 2010 and was a member of their marching band. He enjoyed music, disc golfing, beekeeping, hiking, the outdoors, and his family.

Surviving in addition to his parents, one sister: Kimberly A. (Wesley D.) Bridgette, Lancaster. Maternal grandparents: Mark D. and Charlotte M. Bauman, Lititz. He was preceded in death by paternal grandparents: Leroy S. and Edna M. Beiler. One niece: Jordan Marie Bridgette.

Laura A. Huber

Laura A. Huber, 67, of East Prospect, passed away on Wednesday, October 24, 2018. She was the wife of the late Ricky L. Huber, who passed away in 2007. She was born in Columbia, daughter of the late Elias H. and Laura A. Clinton Tome. She worked as a Seamstress for Tighe Industries. She enjoyed camping, and her family, especially her grandchildren.

She is survived by four daughters: Shelly L. (Todd M.) Filmore; Christina M. Huber; Kelly S. (Stephen) Smith; and Lisa M. (Kris “Peanut”) Kreeger. Five grandsons and five granddaughters. Four sisters: Jackie Szampruch; Linda Donley; Helen Douglas; and Darlene Beaverson. One brother: Richard Tome. She was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

Benjamin G. "Poppy" Slocum

Benjamin G. “Poppy” Slocum, 64, of Mountville, passed away on Monday, October 22, 2018 at home. He was the husband of Patti A. Langley Slocum, with whom he would have celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary on February 17, 2019. He was born in Kane, son of the late Serrill and Ellen Thom Slocum. Ben was a veteran of the US Army, which included serving during the Vietnam Conflict. He retired after 20 years of service. He was a helping and giving person.

Surviving in addition to his wife, two daughters: Tricia A. Slocum-Thurber, Fredonia, NY; Cassie J. (William R.) Coder, Mountville. One son: Scott D. (Ashley) Slocum, Ephrata. Eleven grandchildren: Christopher (Brianna), McKenzie, Joshua, Loretta, Stella, Brody, Linus, Alexander, Zoey, Simon, and Jackson. One sister: Pamela (Rick) Johnston, Kane. He was preceded in death by one brother: Randy Slocum.

Eugene N. Montgomery

Eugene N. Montgomery, 87, of Lancaster, passed away on Monday, October 15, 2018 at Hospice and Community Care, Mount Joy. He was the husband of Dorothy E. “Dot” Millhouse Montgomery with whom he celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary on June 30, 2018. Gene was the son of Aldus, Sr. and Ada Stauffer Montgomery. He was a tool and die maker for Star Dental before his retirement in 1996. Following his retirement, he worked at the Manheim Auto Auction for 10 years. He was a veteran of the US Army, serving during the Korean Conflict and was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church where he was an usher and communion steward. Gene was an avid hunter and fisherman, and enjoyed playing his guitar with the Central Manor Old-Timers, playing at different retirement homes, senior citizens groups and churches. He was the last of his immediate family.

Surviving in addition to his wife, numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by four brothers: Aldus, Jr., Lloyd, Jr., Kenneth, and Theodore Montgomery. Two sisters: Marguerite Frey and Jeannette Landis.

Mary Kathryn Souders

Mary Kathryn Souders, 85, passed away on Wednesday, October 10, 2018 at the Mennonite Home. She was the loving wife of the late Rev. Aaron H. Souders, sharing 59 years of marriage before he passed away in March of 2016. She was born in Millersville, daughter of the late Phares and Ada Shank Stauffer. Mary was a homemaker and also supported her husband throughout his 40 years of ministry at Masonville Mennonite Church.

She is survived by her children: Aaron married to Dianne Souders, Millersville; Miriam wife of Luis Murillo, Lancaster; and Naomi wife of David Brenneman, Lancaster. Five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Two sisters: Verna Hershey, York and Doris Near, New Era, MI. Mary was preceded in death by two brothers: Lloyd and Lester Stauffer, and four sisters: Ruth Mellinger, Anna Stauffer, Elizabeth Stauffer, and Miriam Stauffer.

Melannie B. (Ault) Moshos

Melannie B. (Ault) Moshos, 62, of Lancaster, passed away on Sunday, October 7, 2018 at Hershey Medical Center. She was the wife of Nick A. Moshos, with whom she would have celebrated their 34th wedding anniversary on November 10, 2018. She was born in Columbia, daughter of Betty A. Herr Ault, Mountville and the late Melvin B. Ault. Melannie worked at RCA Corp and in food services for the Hempfield School District. She attended St. Paul’s United Methodist Church and enjoyed word-search puzzles, cooking, yardwork, plants, sports, especially the St. Louis Cardinals and the Philadelphia Phillies and also hanging out with her “Mountville Crew.” She loved her family, especially her nieces and nephews, and the family of her dear friend Kim Herr. She was a caregiver to her extended family.

Surviving in addition to her husband, one son: Alex G. Moshos, Lancaster. Three brothers: Samuel Ault, Conestoga; Jeff (Tammy) Ault, East Petersburg; and Mike (Mary Lou) Ault, Lancaster. Two sisters: Pat (Rob) Powl, Drumore; and Deb Ault, Mountville. She was preceded in death by one sister: Liz Wile and one nephew: Benny Ault.

Ruth E. Blount

Ruth E. Blount, 86, of Mountville, received an offer from Heaven that she couldn’t refuse, on Wednesday, October 3, 2018 at Conestoga View. She was the wife of the late Nolan L. Blount who went to Heaven in 2005. She was born in Lancaster, daughter of the late Ernest H. and Hazel M. Puridy Baisch. She worked as an assembler for KD Tools for many years before her retirement in 1992. She enjoyed going to garage sales, her family, including her children and grandchildren, and her flower beds. She was an animal lover, especially cats, and was a very giving person to everyone, including family members and strangers. Ruth had a great personality, was the life of the party and made everyone laugh. She will be fondly missed by all that knew her.

She is survived by two sons: Nolan S. (Julie) Blount; and Scott A. Blount, all of Columbia. One daughter: Susan L. (Dang) Warner, Lancaster. Three grandchildren: Ashley, Steven, and Paige. One brother, one half-brother, and five half-sisters. She was preceded in death by one son: Roger L. Blount, one brother, one sister, and one half-sister.

Ellwood C. "Woody" Graves

Ellwood C. “Woody” Graves, 83, of Mountville, passed away on Friday, September 21, 2018 at Hospice and Community Care, Mount Joy. He was the husband of Jan L. Cluley Graves, with whom he celebrated their 26th wedding anniversary on August 28, 2018. He was born in Lancaster County, son of the late Ellwood C., Sr. and Lavina J. Alspach Graves. Woody was a precision machinist for Armstrong World Industries, Lancaster Floor Plant, for 41 years. He was a member and firefighter of West Hempfield Fire and Rescue for 37 years, where he served as assistant chief and was treasurer for 35 years. He enjoyed model trains, his computer, and Summers at the shore. He was also an avid Penn State and Philadelphia Eagles fan.

Surviving in addition to his wife, one son: Rick (Leilani) Graves, Mount Joy. One daughter: Jennifer (Kevin) McKenna, Phoenix, AZ. Two step-daughters: Kenda M. (Mark) Galipo, Harrington, DE; and Gayle J. (James) Malloy, Magnolia, DE. One grandson: Randy (Gwen) Graves. Four granddaughters: Amber Mabrey, USN; Brooke Mabrey; Madelyn Galipo; and Autumn Galipo.

Daniel J. Walters

Daniel J. Walters, 68, of Mount Joy, formerly of Bellwood, passed away on Wednesday, September 12, 2018 at Hospice and Community Care Mount Joy. He was the husband of Elaine L. Goetz Walters, who passed away on March 7, 2015. He was born in Bellwood, son of Zella Walters. Dan worked for Trojan Yacht and Armstrong World Industries before his retirement.

He is survived by three sons: Daniel J. (Mary) Walters; David M. (Marissa L.) Walters; and Justin L. Walters. Six grandchildren. Two brothers: Bud and Mike Walters. One sister: Maureen Walters.

Malcolm D. Symmonds

Malcolm D. Symmonds, 97, of Lancaster, passed away on Monday, September 24, 2018 at Hospice and Community Care, Mount Joy. He was the husband of the late Mary E. Symmonds. He was born in Bellefonte and worked as a lineman for IBEW Local Union 126, Norristown for more than 25 years. He was a member of St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, and was a Veteran of the US Army serving during WWII.

He is survived by two sons: Robert (Kathleen) Symmonds, Sewell, NJ; and James (Barbara) Symmonds, Columbia. Two grandchildren: Michael and Kimberly. Seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

Holly Ann Mekni

Holly Ann Mekni, 61, formerly of Lititz, found her eternal peace on Thursday, September 13, 2018 at Hospice and Community Care, Mount Joy. She was born in Ephrata, daughter of the late Roy B. and Ruth L. Remick Mull. She was a member of Mohler Church of the Brethren for many years.

Holly’s joy came from family, and raising her daughter, Briana.

H. Scott Hable

H. Scott Hable, 74, of Lancaster, passed away on Tuesday, September 11, 2018 at Hospice and Community Care, Mount Joy. He was the husband of Linda Frey Hable, with whom he celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary on September 5, 2018. He was born in Lancaster, son of the late Harold B. and Jeanne Youtz Hable. Scott was a school teacher at Pequea Valley Intermediate School for 37 years before his retirement in 2003. He was a member of New Holland United Methodist Church; and he played the organ, and guitar in many bands at local clubs. Scott designed and built their two homes in New Holland and Lewes, DE. He was a great outdoorsman, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, boating, cooking, and traveling, with his trip to Alaska in 2017 being the highlight for him. Scott wintered in Florida; enjoyed weekend getaways with his “buddies” to the cabin; and yearly family gatherings to Ocean City, NJ. He loved his family, especially his grandchildren.

Surviving in addition to his wife, one daughter: Kim S. (Phil) Gibson. Three grandchildren: Kirsten O. Gibson; Joshua P. Gibson; and Valerie S. Hable. One daughter-in-law: Nicole Hable. One brother: Steve Hable. One sister: Susan (Ron) Funk. Also, numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one son: Kevin S. Hable.

Thomas V. Spicer, Sr.

Thomas V. Spicer, Sr., 93, of Columbia, passed away on Monday, September 10, 2018 at Conestoga View. He was the husband of Mary Jane Habel Spicer to whom he was married for 52 years. He was born in Columbia, son of the late John and Emily Reese Spicer. He was an inspector for ITT Grinnell, now Anvil, for 41 years before he retired in 1987. He was a graduate of Columbia High School, Class of 1943 and was a Veteran of the US Army, serving during WWII with Company C, 141st Infantry, 36th Division, having fought in five major battles: Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, Southern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe. He was a member of Columbia United Methodist Church and the VFW Red Rose Memorial Post #2435. He supported Columbia High School Athletics, including Basketball and Football. Tom was an avid Penn State football fan and a Philadelphia Phillies fan. He enjoyed trout fishing, Susquehanna River fishing, cooking and baking, music from the Glenn Miller Era, and Bing Crosby Christmas songs. He painted for 30 years with Bill Long and Ruppie. 

Surviving in addition to his wife, his children: Thomas (Sue) Spicer, Jr., Columbia; Gary (Kay) Spicer, Maytown; Lisa (Charles) Lehman, Columbia; Mike (Brenda) Spicer, Lancaster; and Scott Spicer, Lancaster. Thirteen grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother: John Spicer and one sister: Dorothy Grove.

Esther H. Ostrander

Esther H. Ostrander, 89, of Columbia, entered into Heaven on Sunday, September 9, 2018. She was the wife of the late Marvin W. Barto who passed away in 1961 and Rexford Ostrander who passed away in 2011. She was born in Mastersonville, daughter of the late Jacob M. and Elizabeth Nornhold Heisey. She worked as a technical assembler for AMP, Inc. before her retirement. She was a devout Christian and of the Pentecostal faith and she enjoyed baking, cooking, gardening, flowers, and always looking out for and helping others. 

She is survived by three sons: Quentin (Judy) Barto, Willow Street; David Barto, Mountville; and Jay Barto, Columbia. One step-daughter, two step-sons, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two daughters: Mary Riehl and Lucy Gambrill; and six siblings.

Ronald E. Johnson

Ronald E. Johnson, 69, of Washington Boro, passed away on Monday, September 3, 2018 at Hospice and Community Care, Mount Joy. He was the husband of Denise L. Smith Johnson. Ron was born in Jersey Shore, son of the late Robert and Betty White Johnson. He worked as a Diesel Mechanic on forklifts and other equipment. He was a veteran of the US Marine Corps, serving during the Vietnam Conflict.

Surviving in addition to his wife, one son: Doug (Myrtha) Johnson, North Carolina. Three daughters: Cindy (Sean) Phillips, Soddy-Daisy, TN; Carissa D. (Casey) Eyman, Allentown; and Linde J. Clark, Boston. Six grandchildren: Robert, Crystal, Mikayla, Serena, Abigail, and Emala.

He was born in Lancaster, son of the late Thomas D., Sr. and Dora Firestone Fitzkee and was a Brick Layer. He was a member of Crown of Life Fellowship Church, Mount Joy; was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan; and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and going to the hunting camp.

Surviving in addition to his wife, seven children and four step-children. Numerous grand and step-grandchildren; great and step-great-grandchildren. One sister: Del Carson. He was preceded in death by one brother: Butch Carson, and one sister: Betty Fitzkee.

Estella M. Brubaker

Estella M. Brubaker, 92, formerly of Manheim, passed away on Monday, August 20, 2018 at Legend of Lancaster. She was the wife of the late J. Marlin Brubaker, who passed away on October 27, 2006. She was born in Manor Township, daughter of the late Abram S. and Lillian Myers Kreider. She worked at Gerberick and Payne Shoe Factory and also as a line worker at Charles Chips for many years before her retirement. Estella was a member of Mount Pleasant Brethren in Christ Church. She enjoyed travelling, having visited all 50 states; and she read the Bible through, 28 times. 

She survived by one son: John A. (Mary Anne) Brubaker, Elizabethtown, and their family: Michelle R. (Richard) Jennings, children: Chloe and Emma; Nicole (Jason) Winters, children: Breanne and Zachary. One daughter: Nancy Jean (Michael F.) Newcomer, Lancaster, and their family: Kristel (Shawn) Martin; Troy (Kim) Miller, children: Aidan and Emily. One sister: Anna (Clarence) Nissley, West Virginia. One brother: James (Janet) Kreider, Mount Joy. She was preceded in death by two sisters: Betty Korczakowski and Mary Ann Kreider. One brother: John A. Kreider.
