Myrtle M. "Dolly" Knight

Myrtle M. “Dolly” Knight, 90, of Columbia, passed away on Tuesday, January 15, 2019 at Masonic

Village. She was the wife of the late Clair W. Knight, who passed away in 1965. She was born in Columbia, daughter of the late Susan H. King. Dolly worked numerous years at Beacon Shoe Factory and retired after 36 years from Wyeth Labs, Marietta. She enjoyed going to Indian River and Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.

Dolly is survived by her children: Clair Knight and Linda Knight, both of Columbia. Four grandchildren: Bret, Andra, James and Corinne. Also numerous great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson.

The Graveside Service and Burial will be held at Fairview Cemetery, Wrightsville on Friday, January 18, 2019 at 2:00 P.M. There will be no public viewing. Please omit flowers. Elizabeth G. Ament

Elizabeth G. (Frey) Ament, 94, of Landisville, passed away peacefully at home, on Tuesday, January 15, 2019. “Betty” or “Doll”, as many friends and family called her, married Carl W. Ament, on March 6, 1948 and celebrated 50 years of marriage before he passed away in 1998. She was born in 1924, in Manor Township, daughter of the late Charles Hoover Frey and Anna Buckwalter (Hess) Frey. She went to Manor High School and later worked at RCA Corp and Charles Chips before becoming a fulltime homemaker. She loved her family, friends, and church very much. Betty was the second oldest member of Concordia Evangelical Lutheran Church having joined nearly 70 years ago. She helped at the church whenever possible, in much of that time, with various duties. Heartily, everyone she met through her lifetime, had nothing but love and kind words for her. Betty liked reading, cooking, gardening, doing crossword puzzles, watching Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, WGAL 8 News, and loved chatting on the phone. She was an avid Phillies fan, watching nearly every game, even when they were lousy!

She is survived by one son, Gary L. Ament, Landisville. Two sisters: Arlene Fawber and Jean Krumrine. She was preceded in death by two sisters: Pauline and Miriam; three brothers: Robert, James, and Wayne.

Kerlous Sorial

Kerlous Sorial, 12, of Lancaster, passed away on Saturday, January 12, 2019. He was the son of Maher and Hanan Beshara Sorial of Lancaster. Kerlous was a member of St. Mary Coptic Orthodox Church and a seventh grade student at Manor Middle School.

Surviving in addition to his parents are one brother: Thomas Sorial. Two sisters: Amanie Sorial and Haide Sorial.

Phyllis Vivian (Smith) Keck

Phyllis Vivian (Smith) Keck, 91, of Mountville, passed to her heavenly home on Tuesday, January 8, 2019, at St. Anne’s Retirement Community. She was born in Columbia, daughter of the late Paul R. and Charlotte Bard Smith. She was the wife of the late Robert Keck for 65 years before his passing in 2014.

Growing up in a loving home, she developed a love of people, her church and community. Helping others was her role in life. She cared for her mother-in-law, who was stricken with Parkinson’s disease, for 9 years, in her home. For 20 years, she was the caregiver of her mother, Charlotte, who was challenged in the aftermath of a stroke. At age 18, she, along with her mother and sisters became caregivers to her infant brother upon the untimely death of her father. Her life focused on caring for her family, friends and her church, Concordia Evangelical Lutheran Church for 65 consecutive years where she played the organ continuously. Also she played on Sunday afternoons at St. John Herr Estates, for 15 years.

As a member of Concordia Evangelical Lutheran Church, Phyllis served in various capacities of the Church. She played the organ for many weddings, funerals and church events for more than 6 decades.

Mrs. Keck graduated from Columbia High School in 1944 where she was a commencement speaker. Phyllis was a member of the Lancaster Musical Arts Society, Director of Music for Job’s Daughters, Bethel 7, for over 40 years, an Honorary Permanent Member of the Grand Guardian Council, and the recipient of the Pennsylvania Masonic Youth Foundation’s HODEGOS award, recognizing exemplary volunteer leadership. Phyllis was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary VFW Post # 8757, and a Diamond Life Sponsor member of the NWTF.

Among her hobbies included, baking, cooking, canning, helping her husband with their vegetable garden and many others. She liked to spend time traveling with her husband to Germany, Alaska and South Carolina. Most of all, she loved to spend quality time with her family and friends.

The family would like to express their appreciation for the excellent care received from all of the staff at St. Anne’s Retirement Community. Dr. Robert Shultz, and Hospice and Community Care. Thanks also to Pastor Mary Anne Kingsborough and Pastor Tom Rundell and the whole Concordia family. We are indeed grateful for the kindnesses and the care from each and every one.

Surviving are two children: Rob (Susan) Keck, Edgefield, SC; and Carol (Jeff) Gill, Lancaster. Three grandchildren: Carolyn (Curtis) Wright North Augusta, SC; Heather (Charlie) Reynolds, Greenville, SC; and Ryan (Angela) Gill, Lancaster. Five great-grandchildren: Cadence and Kellen Wright; Hank, Coleman and Hays Reynolds. Phyllis was preceded in death by her brother Paul and her sister Eleanor.

Gwendoline A. (Gwen) Williams

Gwendoline A. (Gwen) Williams, 92, of Columbia, passed away on Tuesday, January 1, 2019 at Susquehanna Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was the wife of the late Eugene Williams, who passed away in 2012. She was born in Surrey, England, daughter of the late Alfred and Bertha Goody. Gwen worked at Poplar Terrace, Lebanon in maintenance before her retirement. She enjoyed knitting, baking, cooking, and her family, especially her grandchildren.

She is survived by two sons: Terry L. (Rose M.) Huffman, Conway, SC; and Robert L. Huffman, Lebanon. One daughter: Wendy E. (Vincent J.) Doria, West Hempfield Twp. One step-daughter: Kathy Martin, Palmyra. Six grandchildren: Ashley, Joshua, Brian, Lisa, Melissa, and Jess. Also, numerous great-grandchildren.

Franklin L. Swift

Franklin L. Swift, 83, of Mountville, passed away on Thursday, December 27, 2018 at home. He was born in Chester County, son of the late Leo Connel and Bessie Hilton. He worked in maintenance for the School District of Lancaster for 19 years before retiring in 1997. He enjoyed going to Florida, especially Disney World and Epcot Center and taking long walks. Family and friends referred to him as a “really nice guy”.

He is survived by several nieces and nephews. Franklin was preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters.

Ruth Henne Greenawalt

Ruth Henne Greenawalt, 96, of Mountville, passed to her heavenly home on Tuesday, December 25, 2018, at Country Meadows of Lancaster. She was born in Centerville, PA, daughter of the late Frank H. Henne (a descendant of Hans Herr,) and Ruth Stouffer Henne. She was the wife of the late Ralph Haertter Greenawalt, Jr. for 71 years before his passing in 2013.

Growing up on a farm, Ruth developed a love of the outdoors, gardening and animals. An avid Girl Scout, she belonged to Girl Scout Troop #1 in Mountville, one of the first in Lancaster County, and eventually received the rare Golden Eaglet Award. As a parent, she continued serving as Den Mother for Mountville’s Cub Pack, and as a Girl Scout Leader for both Mountville’s Brownie and Girl Scout troops.

Mrs. Greenawalt graduated from Hempfield High School in 1940, entered the Laboratory Technician program at the St. Joseph Hospital (old Gothic building) and worked as a laboratory technician, eventually becoming supervisor of the Blood Bank. While raising her family, she entered Millersville University, obtaining a B.A. in English. Since she always enjoyed working with children, Ruth became an English teacher at the Edward Hand Junior High School, in Lancaster.

Ruth was an Emeritus member of the Mountwaybia Club, a local ladies literary group, and enjoyed hosting them in her home as well as presenting book reviews periodically. She was a longtime volunteer for the Mountville Library from its beginning in the basement of the VFW building and through several other moves and locations, until it found its present home.

Ruth was a member of Concordia Evangelical Lutheran Church and served in a volunteer leadership capacity on the Church Council, and as their Christian Education Director. In her later years, she enjoyed teaching an Adult Sunday School Class of her friends. She sang alto in the Church Choir, supporting most church events.

Among her hobbies were reading, doing daily crossword puzzles, and helping her husband with their vegetable garden. She was also an accomplished seamstress and loved to make slip covers for anyone who needed them. She liked to spend her evenings knitting while watching TV with her husband. Most of all, she loved to spend time with her family and friends.

The family would like to express their appreciation for the excellent care Ruth received from all of the staff at Country Meadows, Lancaster, Dr. Michael Leser, and Grane Hospice. Thanks also to Pastor Mary Anne Kingsborough and Pastor Tom Rundell and the whole Concordia family. We are indeed grateful for the kindnesses and the care from each and every one!

Surviving are three children: Bruce, Bradenton, FL; Fred (Jacalyn), Lancaster; Carole (Dr. Marvin Daley), Lancaster and Venice, FL; and Claire (widow of Ralph, III) Cottonwood, AZ. Four grandchildren: Tammi (Shawn) Miller, Millersville; Tina Greenawalt, Clarkdale, AZ; Keith (Kami) Greenawalt, Carlisle; and Fred (Ashley) Greenawalt, Jr., Columbia. Two great-grandchildren: Healy Miller, Millersville and Brayden Greenawalt, Columbia. Ruth was preceded in death by her oldest son, Ralph H. Greenawalt, III; Brothers: Lemuel and Frank Henne, Jr.; and her sisters: Esther Henne and Nancy Oberholtzer.

Carolyn M. Welsh

Carolyn M. Welsh, 90, of Columbia, passed away on Thursday, December 27, 2018 at Hospice and Community Care. She was the wife of the late James P. Welsh, who passed away in 2000. She was born in Columbia, daughter of the late Lawrence and Carolyn M. Resch Kuhn. Carolyn was a graduate of St. Joseph Academy and worked for the former ITT Grinnell, Corp until her marriage. She was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and enjoyed reading, going to antique markets, knick-knack shops, and flea-markets. She was an excellent cook, especially her spaghetti. She collected many items over the years, but angels were her favorite. After her husband’s death, she and her son would travel to favorite restaurants and antiquing nearly every Sunday.

She is survived by one son: James P., Jr., Columbia. One granddaughter: Beth-Ann Welsh-Kline (Ryan), York, three great-grandchildren, one step-great-grandchild and nieces and nephews. One brother: Donald Kuhn, Columbia. She was preceded in death by one son: Lawrence Welsh, and one brother: James Kuhn.

Cheryl A. Smythe

Cheryl A. Smythe, 59, of Lancaster, passed away on Christmas, December 25, 2018 at Lancaster General Hospital. She was the cherished wife of Russell L. Smythe to whom she was married for 32 years. She was born in Columbia, daughter of Stanley Keebler, Strasburg and Barbara Campbell, Great Falls, MT. She provided loving, in-home daycare for local children for over 20 years. She always enjoyed sharing her many crafts with others, which included: rubber-stamping, needlepoint, knitting, crocheting, and making jewelry. Although she suffered with kidney disease, it did not define her. She always had a positive attitude and faced her challenge with an infectious smile. She gave inspiration and faith to others and fought to the very end. Cheryl will be greatly missed by everyone that knew her.

June E. (nee Anderson) Roberts, 78, of Landisville, passed away on Friday, December 21, 2018 at Hospice and Community Care, Mount Joy. She was the wife of Brian A. Roberts with whom she celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on June 1, 2018. She was born in Hull, England, daughter of the late John Thomas and Esther Elizabeth Moon Anderson. She was a member of St. Edward’s Episcopal Church and sang in their choir for 20 years.

William "Bill" Albert Klinefelter

William “Bill” Albert Klinefelter, 82 of Landisville, entered peacefully into his eternal rest on Friday evening, December 21, 2018 at home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Railroad, PA in 1936, son of the late Corliss L. and Amelia Beulah Houston Klinefelter. Bill was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church for 58 years where he was a choir member, Sunday School Teacher and served as a trustee. He proudly served in the US Navy from 1953-54 when he was Honorably Discharged due to illness. He was a member of the American Legion, Post #34. Bill retired from the meat industry in 2006 after a career that spanned 50 plus years as a store owner, meat cutter, meat manager, meat buyer, and specialist for area food service companies. He was active in the Hempfield Midget Sports Football Program, having coached for 8 years. Bill was very active in various Masonic organizations. He was raised to a Master Mason at Columbia Lodge F&AM #286 where he was a 53 year member. He was also a member of the Lancaster Lodge of Perfection, Council Chapter of Consistory Scottish Rite and Rajah Shrine, both of Reading. He was a Past Grand Tall Cedar of the Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Lancaster Forest #27. While serving in the Tall Cedars Supreme Forest he held numerous positions. He served as the Past Supreme Scribe, Deputy Supreme Provost Marshall, Deputy Supreme Chief Ranger, and Supreme Chief Ranger. He served as aide to the Supreme Tall Cedar for 3 years and in 2017, he was deeply honored to be the recipient of the Tall Cedar Broughton Award. Bill truly loved spending time with his family whether they were camping, fishing, or vacationing at the Outer Banks of North Carolina. He was the loving husband of Jean I. Bortner Klinefelter, with whom he would have celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary today, December 24, 2018.

Surviving in addition to his wife, two daughters and a son: Fay C. Radziewicz, companion of Michael Vernon, Manheim; William E. Klinefelter, husband of Susan A. Klinefelter, Landisville; and Melissa J. Yoder, wife of Steven C. Yoder, Lancaster. Eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Also, three half-brothers. He was preceded in death by one infant son and a half-brother.

Donna J. Spangler

Donna J. Spangler, 70, of Conestoga, passed away on Friday, December 14, 2018 at home. She was the wife of Paul E. Spangler, to whom she was married for 44 years. Donna was born in Windber, daughter of the late Clarence and Ethel Blair McClucas. She worked for Exide Corporation for 22 years before her retirement.

Surviving in addition to her husband, are ten brothers and sisters. She was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.

Michael R. Ober

Michael R. Ober, 60, of Lancaster, passed away on Monday, December 10, 2018. He was the husband of Sherry Ochs Ober, with whom he celebrated their 38th wedding anniversary on July 26, 2018. He was born in Ephrata, son of Evelyn M. Ober, Ephrata and the late L. Ray Ober. Mike was a Technical Education Teacher (Metal Shop) at Eastern York High School with 33 1/3 years of service. He was a member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church and a graduate of Manheim Township High School, Class of 1976. He received his BS in 1980 from Millersville State College and in 1984 he was awarded his M.Ed from Millersville University. He was a trombonist with the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra for 25 years. Mike received the Professional Teacher Award of Low Brass from the LLMEA in April of 2017. He was the founder, in 1992 and leader of the Dixieland Express Band. Mike was a member of Local #294 AF of M, and was a freelance musician for many years. He was a Little League Coach for CV and was the head coach for the Championship Team, the Marlins, in 2002. He was an avid Oakland Raiders fan and he loved his dog, “Raider”.

Surviving in addition to his wife and mother, two sons: Keith M. (Ruth V.) Ober, Lancaster and Shawn E. Ober, fiancé of Erika Gaenzle and her daughter, Isabella of Manheim. Two grandchildren: Lilah Eve and Henry Michael. One niece and one nephew. One sister: Linda K. (Kent L.) Fritz, Lititz.

The family would like to thank the staff at Hospice and Community Care and the Moravian Center Adult Daycare for the wonderful care extended to Mike and his family.

Richard P. "Dick" Dietrich

Richard P. “Dick” Dietrich, 80, of Willow Valley Communities, Lancaster, formerly of Mechanicsburg, passed away on Wednesday, December 5, 2018. He was the husband of Geraldine M. Machusick Dietrich. He was born in Reading, son of the late Paul and Irene Bohren Dietrich. He was the former Principal at Northern High School. Dick was a member of the Historic St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Eli David Watkins

Eli David Watkins, was born on Thursday, November 8, 2018 at 10:25 A.M. Though he did not survive birth, he was surrounded by family who loved him deeply.

He is survived by his parents Clint and Jillian Watkins. Paternal grandparents: Mark A. and Sharon J. Watkins. Maternal grandparents: Donald L. and Sharon L. Neff. Paternal great-grandmothers: Jo Ann Watkins and Elvina Janzen. Maternal great-grandmother: Loretta Kauffman.

Mary Jane Swarr

Mary Jane Swarr, 83, of Juniper Village, Mount Joy, passed away on Wednesday, November 21, 2018 at Hospice and Community Care. She was the wife of John R. Swarr, with whom she celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary on August 2, 2018. She was born in Columbia, daughter of the late Curvin Tome I, and the late Mary King Peters. Mary Jane was a bus driver and cook for Head Start, Columbia for 26 years before her retirement. She was a member of Columbia United Methodist Church and their choir. She was a very good and avid bowler and she also enjoyed playing cards, including poker; going to the mountains; and spending time with her family.

Raymond W. Burkholder

Raymond W. Burkholder, 83, of Washington Boro, went to be with his Lord and Savior, peacefully at home on Wednesday, November 14, 2018, surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Lois Bowman Burkholder, with whom he celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary on October 20, 2018. He was born in Clay Twp., son of the late John H. and Mary Wenger Burkholder. Raymond attended Faith Bible Fellowship Church. He was a lifelong farmer and enjoyed gardening, hunting, skiing, and Bluegrass music. He also loved taking his family to the beach and the cabin in Potter County.

Surviving in addition to his wife, his children: Robert (Sallie) Burkholder; Dana (Mark) Smith; Joyce (Richard) Funk; and Judy (Lewis) Witmer, all of Manor Twp. Fourteen grandchildren, and sixteen great-grandchildren. Siblings: Paul Burkholder, Ruth Breneman, Clyde Burkholder, Ezra Burkholder, Jean Zimmerman-Alvisi, and Glenn (Phoebe) Burkholder.

Nathan Mark “Nate” Beiler

Nathan Mark “Nate” Beiler, 27, of Lancaster, passed away on Tuesday, November 13, 2018. He was born in Lancaster, son of Larry L. and Terri L. Bauman Beiler, Manheim. He was an accountant for S. Clyde Weaver for the past six years. Nate was a graduate of Manheim Central High School, Class of 2010 and was a member of their marching band. He enjoyed music, disc golfing, beekeeping, hiking, the outdoors, and his family.

Surviving in addition to his parents, one sister: Kimberly A. (Wesley D.) Bridgette, Lancaster. Maternal grandparents: Mark D. and Charlotte M. Bauman, Lititz. He was preceded in death by paternal grandparents: Leroy S. and Edna M. Beiler. One niece: Jordan Marie Bridgette.

The Memorial Service will be held at Manheim Brethren in Christ Church, 54 North Penryn Road, Manheim, on Monday, November 19, 2018 at 11:00 AM with Pastor Marlin Nafziger, officiating. Laura A. Huber

Laura A. Huber, 67, of East Prospect, passed away on Wednesday, October 24, 2018. She was the wife of the late Ricky L. Huber, who passed away in 2007. She was born in Columbia, daughter of the late Elias H. and Laura A. Clinton Tome. She worked as a Seamstress for Tighe Industries. She enjoyed camping, and her family, especially her grandchildren.

She is survived by four daughters: Shelly L. (Todd M.) Filmore; Christina M. Huber; Kelly S. (Stephen) Smith; and Lisa M. (Kris “Peanut”) Kreeger. Five grandsons and five granddaughters. Four sisters: Jackie Szampruch; Linda Donley; Helen Douglas; and Darlene Beaverson. One brother: Richard Tome. She was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

Benjamin G. "Poppy" Slocum

Benjamin G. “Poppy” Slocum, 64, of Mountville, passed away on Monday, October 22, 2018 at home. He was the husband of Patti A. Langley Slocum, with whom he would have celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary on February 17, 2019. He was born in Kane, son of the late Serrill and Ellen Thom Slocum. Ben was a veteran of the US Army, which included serving during the Vietnam Conflict. He retired after 20 years of service. He was a helping and giving person.

Surviving in addition to his wife, two daughters: Tricia A. Slocum-Thurber, Fredonia, NY; Cassie J. (William R.) Coder, Mountville. One son: Scott D. (Ashley) Slocum, Ephrata. Eleven grandchildren: Christopher (Brianna), McKenzie, Joshua, Loretta, Stella, Brody, Linus, Alexander, Zoey, Simon, and Jackson. One sister: Pamela (Rick) Johnston, Kane. He was preceded in death by one brother: Randy Slocum.
