Dennis E. Ruth, Jr., 54, of Mountville, passed away on Saturday, December 28, 2019 at home. He was the husband of Gwen S. Frey Ruth to whom he was married for 36 years. He was born in Lancaster, son of Dennis E. Ruth, Sr., Columbia and the late Judy Ness Ruth. He enjoyed jigsaw puzzles and yard-work.

Surviving in addition to his wife and father, one step-son: Mike L. (Jean) Frey, Lancaster. Three grandchildren: Michael, Kyle, and Ashley. One brother: Tony Ruth, Columbia. One sister: Lisa Ruth, Columbia. He was preceded in death by one brother: Jake Ruth.

Richard S. King

Devoted Husband, Father, Grandfather, Great-Grandfather, Friend

January 10, 1921 – December 28, 2019

Richard Shopf King, 98, of Millersville, passed away peacefully Saturday afternoon, surrounded by family at Lancaster General Hospital. He lived a life filled with faith and dedicated to humble service to his family, church, country, and friends.

Dick was married to his beloved wife, Lorna Jene King, for 66 years, until her passing in 2013. Born in Manor Township, Dick was the son of the late Elizabeth Shopf King and Harry Roy King in a family of twelve children. He graduated from Hempfield High School in the class of 1938, and immediately began to work for John W. Eshelman and Sons Feed Company in Lancaster. He first hauled feed and, after World War II, obtained an accounting degree from Lancaster Business College and became the company’s accountant/office manager.

During World War II, Dick proudly served our country as a staff sergeant in the US Army Air Corps stationed in China with the Flying Tiger. He and Lorna, also a veteran, were featured in a 2002 PCN Veterans public television series. He was an active member of the China-Burma-India Theater veterans group. He was honored in 2015 with other CBI veterans at the 75th anniversary of V-J Day by the Asian Pacific World War II Atrocities Memorial organization in Gaithersburg, MD.

Dick was always interested in other people and they all felt his interest in them. Dick lived life to its fullest, treasuring every moment, and had a wide variety of interests and affiliations. First among them was his devotion to St. Paul Lutheran Church, Millersville, where he served as a lay reader for more than four decades and also on other church-related committees.

He had a giving, humble heart that was visible in his many acts of service. He was very involved with the Charles M. Howell Masonic Lodge #496 F&AM as a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason where he served as treasurer for many years. Along with Lorna, Dick delivered Millersville Meals-on-Wheels for more than twenty-five years. Taking on a tradition from his father-in-law, Dick also maintained Shank’s Cemetery on Route 999, cutting its grass and making repairs since the 1960s. He was part of Grave Concern Inc. of Lancaster County, an organization dedicated to the history, preservation, and restoration of historical burial places. He was also a passionate Phillies fan and baseball player as a young man. In retirement, he was an avid and accomplished golfer, and loved outings with his sons and grandchildren. He frequently played with his golf group, “Parsormore,” and continued playing late into his 90s.

Dick’s legacy lives on in his loving family. His sister: Ella Miller, of Mountville. His children: Marbeth (Walter) Szczerban, of Wilmington, DE; Tracy (the late Adele) King, and Matthew (Trina) King, all of Mountville. Seven grandchildren: Christopher (Sarah) Szczerban; Michael (Kristen) Szczerban; Kate (Andrew) Zinn; Jared (Krystal) King; Brooke King; Joshua King; and Colton King. Five great-grandchildren: Theodore and Noah Zinn (Kate), Brielle King (Colton), and Isabel and Juliet Szczerban (Christopher); and close family friends: Carol Houghton, Marcia E. Herman Berg, and Barbara L. Donovan. Dick was preceded in death by daughter Sally Jene in infancy in 1953; and son Scott in 2007.

All are invited to attend the Memorial Service at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 222 N. George St., Millersville, PA 17551 on Saturday, January 4, 2020 at 11:00 A.M. George W. Moore, Jr.

George W. Moore, Jr., 57, of Wilmington, DE, passed away at home on Friday, December 20, 2019. He was born in Columbia, son of the late George W., Sr. and Ellen Mae Kautz Moore, Lancaster. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren; and fishing. He was a kind person and would help anyone that he could.

George is survived by two daughters: Tiffany R. Moore and her children: Aleeya and Quincey; and Jacqueline M. Stuber and her children: Liliana and Savannah. Three sisters: Alice (Garry R.) Funk; Sally A. (Gerald R.) McMullen; and Eva J. (Jose) Bankus Berrios.

Yvonne I. Malles

Yvonne I. "Cha Cha" Malles, 58, of Mountville finished a 23 year battle with breast cancer on Thursday, December 19, 2019 at home. She has moved on and is reunited with her parents, the late Irving and Gladys Acevedo Ramirez. 

She is survived by her husband of 35 years, Andy Malles. Two daughters: Christina Malles (and Dash), Philadelphia and Amanda, wife of Shane Dougherty, Severna Park, MD. One grandson, Calder Dougherty. She had fond memories of the many players, parents, and opposing teams that were encountered during her daughters' soccer and field hockey years, vacations to her childhood home in San Diego, along with game nights, and shopping always brought a warm smile to her face. There was always a dog in her life and the two left behind will miss her; however, it is a great comfort to know there are four with her.

Marian L. Lombardo, 91, of Kite, GA, formerly of Washington Boro passed away on Friday, December 20, 2019. She was the wife of the late Nicholas A. Lombardo. She was born in Washington Boro, daughter of the late Frederick and Helen Ortman Frey.

Miss Doris L. "Pepper" Wertz, of Columbia, formerly of Washington Boro, passed away on Saturday, December 21, 2019. Doris recently celebrated her 90th birthday. She was born in Washington Boro, daughter of the late Joseph S. Wertz, Jr. and Anna Mae Kilheffer Wertz Shultz. Doris was retired from ITT Grinnell Corporation, Columbia, having been employed for 32 years as a payroll clerk, part-time telephone operator and clerk in the accounting department. She was also employed at Hinkle's Pharmacy as a part-time cashier in the restaurant area for 9 years. Doris was a life-long member of the Washington Boro Church of God, serving as a Sunday School teacher in the Junior Department, choir member, secretary of Ladies Aid for many years, treasurer of Golden Rule Sunday School Class as well as a member of the Hospitality Committee. She was also a member of the Grinnell Retirement Club and served as secretary of the group.

She is survived by one sister: Janet E. Gerlach, Columbia and one brother: Robert B. Wertz, Washington Boro. Six nieces and nephews: Jolene M. (Douglas) Eyer; Stephanie J. (Michael) Morris; Janice E. (Harold) Ulmer; James D. (Dianne) Wertz; Ronald D. (Dona) Wertz; and Steven B. (Sheila) Wertz. She was preceded in death by her siblings: Joseph S. Wertz; Irene M. Sauders; and Curtis B. Wertz.

Betty Lou Wenger

Betty Lou Wenger, 79, of Columbia, passed away on Thursday, December 19, 2019 at home. She was the wife of Vaughn A. Wenger, Sr. with whom she celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on December 6, 2019. She was born in Columbia, daughter of the late Earl J. and Mabel Lowe Stoutzenberger. She was a receptionist for H & R Block; also worked as the night shift supervisor at Kahn-Lucas Manufacturing for 25 years; and Fox and Redner's Markets before her retirement. Betty Lou was a member of Columbia United Methodist Church and enjoyed going to Susquehanna Fish and Game, enjoyed reading James Patterson books, and her family.

Surviving in addition to her husband, her children: Lori A. Wenger (Life Partner: Robert Haldeman); Lisa R. (Marlin) Haldeman; Heidi J. (Greg) Nikolaus; Vaughn A. Wenger, Jr. (Companion: Anne Dohn). Fourteen grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. Sisters: Harriet Lauver; and Patty Ann Witmer. Brother: William Stoutzenberger. She was preceded in death by six brothers and sisters.

Mildred E. Morton

Mildred E. Morton, 64, of Columbia, passed away on Monday, December 16, 2019 at Hospice and Community Care, Mount Joy, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Columbia, daughter of the late John D. and Mildred E. Bair Culp. She worked as an LPN at the former Heatherbank Nursing Center and as a security guard at Boscov’s before her disability. She was a member of Silver Spring Baptist Church and enjoyed crocheting, knitting, bowling, fishing with her nephew and was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan.

She is survived by one brother Glenn D. (Loretta) Culp. Two sisters: Emma C. (Ronald L.) Manley and Cathy C. Shaeffer, all of Columbia. She was preceded in death by one brother: Dan Culp.

Charles D. "Dave" Kleckner

Charles D. "Dave" Kleckner, 77, of Lancaster, passed away on Wednesday, December 11, 2019 at home. He was the husband of Jean M. Byerly Kleckner with whom he celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary on August 8, 2019. Dave was born in Tamaqua, son of the late Charles S. and Ruth N. Wagner Kleckner. He worked in Industrial Sales for Reilly Brothers and Raub, Shenk and Tittle, and IDG before his retirement. He was a member of Grace Evangelical Congregational Church for 62 years, where he was a Sunday School Teacher, Worship Leader and a Board Member. Dave was also a member of Millcreek Sportsman Association where he served on the Board of Directors; was a member of the NRA with whom he was a Certified Instructor and received an award for his many years of service. He was a Safety Pistol Instructor for many years; a member of Mount Joy Sportsman Association where he did competitive shooting in the Red Rose Pistol League. Dave coached Midget Football for 40 years for the Manheim Twp. Eglets and Lancaster Presidents.

Surviving in addition to his wife, his children: Charles D. (Patti) Kleckner; Lori J. (R. Scott) Hagen; Stephen J. (Jennifer) Kleckner; and Jonathan A. (Dana) Kleckner. Ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother: James W. Kleckner.

Jacquelyn M. Royer, 81 of West Hempfield Township, passed away on Friday, December 13, 2019. She was the wife of Edgar W. Royer to whom she was married for 52 years. Jackie was born in Lebanon County, daughter of the late John H. and Verna Hartzell Krissinger. She worked as a receptionist for Charles Hoffman, DDS, Lebanon. She was a member of Ironville United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School and scheduled the ushers for many years. She enjoyed reading, gardening, canning and was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels.

Surviving in addition to her husband, two sons: Michael S. (Michelle L.) Royer and Gregory A. (Mary Ann) Royer. Eleven grandchildren and two great-granddaughters. Four sisters: Shirley Arnold, Jeanette Mace, Gloria Jean Carpenter, and Janice Kingsley. She was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters.

Dennis E. Ortman, 70, of Columbia, passed away on Tuesday, Decembr 10, 2019. He was the husband of the late Jean L. Ortman who passed away in 2015. He was born in Washington Boro, son of the late Mabel Ortman Bish. Dennis was a loving father and grandfather who enjoyed cooking, and football, especially the Baltimore Ravens.

He is survived by three sons: Jason C. Ortman; Steven M. Ortman; and David (Robyn) Graham. Miriam H. Miller

Miriam H. Miller, 90, of St. John Herr Estates, Columbia, passed away on Friday, November 29, 2019 in Lancaster. She was the wife of the late, Jay Robert Miller, who passed away in January of 2006. She was born in Manor Township, daughter of the late Christian G. and Elsie Mowrer Habecker. She was a homemaker and did domestic work for the Mann family. She also worked on the family farm until the Spring of 1968, and in the cafeteria at Penn Manor High School and at Garvin’s Department Store. She was a member of Central Manor Church of God where she taught Sunday School to the fourth graders for many years. She was a graduate of Manor Township-Millersville Boro High School, Class of 1947. She was a member and past president of the Farm Women’s Society #23; the Postcard Club; and she enjoyed bird watching, sewing, going to the mountains, gardening, and spending time with her family.

She is survived by a son: P. Robert Miller, Augusta, GA. A daughter: Janice M. (Daniel R.) Good, Mount Joy. Eight grandchildren. Eleven great-grandchildren. One great-great-grandson. Sisters: Esther Nolt; Mary Weaver; and Edna (Dick) Shenk, all of Lancaster. She was preceded in death by a daughter: Joyce Harris; grandson: Christopher Harris; sisters: Anna Martin; Martha Barley; and Florence Dryden.

Frederick M. “Fred” Kreider, 73, of Conestoga View passed away on Tuesday, November 26, 2019. He was born in Lancaster, son of the late Clarence H. and L. Virginia Armentrout Kreider. He was a member of Mountville Mennonite Church and enjoyed singing, having sung with the Moment of Glad Tidings; eating; and current events. Fred’s favorite radio station was 90.3 FM.

He is survived by a step-sister: A. Elizabeth Witmer, Lititz. Step-brother: Daniel S. Weaver, Willow Street. Half-sister: Martha J. (Glenn J.) Lippart, Lititz. Step-sister-in-law: Alverna “Sue” Weaver, Willow Street. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by Step-brother: Clayton E. Weaver.

Dawn E. Hewes, 61, of Lancaster, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 20, 2019 at home, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Lancaster, daughter of Sylvia M. Hershey Squires and the late Fred Squires. She was a graduate of Hempfield High School, Class of 1976.

Ginger L. Ditzel

Ginger L. Ditzel, 74, of Enola, passed away on Thursday, November 14, 2019. She was the wife of David D. Ditzel with whom she would have been married to for 12 years, and the late J. Ray Kauffman, Sr. She was born in Lancaster, daughter of the late Fred Holdridge. She worked in various shoe factories in the Lancaster area, Jamesway and CVS until finally retiring. She also volunteered at Creekside Fire Company. She enjoyed crocheting, volunteering at the firehouse, spending time with family, shopping and traveling.

Surviving in addition to her husband, her sons: Eugene and J. Ray (Dawn) Kauffman, Jr. One step-daughter: Kelli Ditzel. Five grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. Siblings: Mary Dale; Sam Holdridge; Carol Dale; and Joan Trout. She was preceded in death by one son: Rodney Albert.

Coy L. Thomas, Sr., 86, of Conestoga, passed away on Sunday, November 10, 2019. He was the husband of the late Charlotte M. Thomas. He was born in Saltville, VA, son of the late Sandy and Ellea Jones Thomas. He was a carpenter/farmer. Coy was a Veteran of the US Army, serving during the Korean Conflict and was an avid hunter.

Guy M. "Bull" Collins, Jr.

Guy M. "Bull" Collins, Jr., 84, of West Hempfield Township, passed away on Wednesday, November 6, 2019 at home. He was born in West Hempfield Twp., son of the late Guy M. Collins, Sr. He was a foreman at Lancaster Malleable Castings, Company for 37 years of which 35 were perfectly attended. He was a veteran of the US Army, loved going to Roots Market, Hinkles for breakfast, bowling, NASCAR with Chase Elliott being his favorite driver, miniature golf and was a former member of the Ironville Fire Company.

He is survived by two sons: Edwin G. Collins, Tulsa, OK; and Guy M. "Tiger" Collins, III, West Hempfield Twp. One granddaughter: Kathryn Rose Collins, Oklahoma. One step-brother: Kerwin H. (Joyce) Wertz, Washington Boro. He was preceded in death by one daughter: Michelle Collins Zipp, and numerous brothers and sisters.

Shawn C. Shaub

Shawn C. Shaub, 33, of Lancaster, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, October 24, 2019 at home. He was born in Lancaster, son of the late Scott A. Shaub, Sr. and Sandra E. Burger Shaub, companion of Vincent E. Collier, both of Lancaster. He was a computer technician and was very interested in drama, music, culture and politics.

Surviving in addition to his mother, one brother: Scott A. Shaub, Jr., companion of Rylie Knox, both of Lancaster. One sister: Rose L. Shaub, Landisville. Maternal grandparents: James K. and Darlene Burger, Landisville. Numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
