Ruth B. Weaver

Ruth B. Weaver, 96, of Landisville, our beloved mother, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, April 19, 2021 at UPMC Lititz, after a brief illness. She was the wife of the late Vincent P. Weaver and the daughter of the late William and Ruth Sharp Beppler. Ruth was a member of Grace Baptist Church and loved sharing God's word with children, as was evidenced through her many Good News Clubs and Release Times that she hosted in her home. Some of her happiest moments were spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well as spending time with her church family and friends. She was a graduate of JP McCaskey High School and volunteered at the Water Street Rescue Mission.

Ruth leaves behind her children: Robert and his wife Velma Weaver; William and his wife Debbie Weaver; Linda and her husband Joseph Dukes and Ruthie and her husband Jess Johnson. Her grandchildren: Timothy Weaver; Kerri Petersheim; Melody Young; Nathan Weaver; Joseph Dukes; Marcus Weaver; Sandy Le; Sarah Noland and twenty great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brother: Robert Beppler and her sister: Martha Beppler.

The Celebration of Life Service will be held at Grace Baptist Church, 1899 Marietta Avenue, Lancaster, PA 17603 on Wednesday, May 5, at 11:00 A.M. Interment in Millersville Mennonite Cemetery. Jere F. Goretzke, Sr.

Jere F. Goretzke, Sr., 76, of New Danville, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, April 15, 2021 at Lancaster General Hospital, following a brief illness. He was the husband of Judith A. "Judy" Downes Goretzke, with whom he celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary on December 31, 2020. He was born in Lancaster, son of the late Jay R., Sr. and Florence Miller Goretzke. Jere was a truck driver for United Parcel Service for more than 30 years before his retirement in 2004. He was a veteran of the US Army, serving with the Old Guard during the Vietnam Conflict, and was a member of the Fife and Drum Corps at Arlington National Cemetery. Jere was a member of New Danville Fire Company; played shortstop for and also coached the New Danville Modified Softball Team; coached Little League and was an avid hunter.

Surviving in addition to his wife, one daughter: Joy L. (John) Wighaman, Lancaster. Three grandchildren: Oliver, Carter and Vivian. He was preceded in death by one son: Jere F. Goretzke, Jr. Two brothers: John L. Goretzke and Jay R. Goretzke, Jr.

John C. Beck

John C. Beck, took his final journey on Monday, April 12, 2021, four days after his 95th birthday. He was the husband of the late Ruth H. Beck for 52 years until her passing on September 21, 2004. Jack was born in Columbia, son of the late Clarence W. and Blanche Hinkle Beck. He was a longtime resident of Columbia, and was a technician for Columbia Telephone Company before his retirement. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod where he was the oldest member. Jack enlisted, to serve his country in the US Navy during WWII, the day after graduating from Columbia High School where he served in the South Pacific, New Guinea, and the Philippines. He was a trombone player, having been in the Columbia Dance Band, Shawnee Marching Band and the Bainbridge Band. Jack was very proud of his German heritage and enjoyed gardening, Bible studies, his church and home. He also enjoyed spending time with his many friends and extended family.

Jack is survived by his children: Deborah (Paul) Holt, Washington Boro; Lynne (Kenneth) Houck, Lancaster; and J. Michael (Rita) Beck, Columbia, MD. He was very proud of his nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and an eighth great-granddaughter expected this summer. He was preceded in death by one grandson: Jonathan P. Holt and one brother: Don Beck.

The family would like to extend a big thank-you to the caring personnel for embracing him at Brereton Manor, where he resided for the past 8 years.

Reuben S. Morrison

Reuben S. Morrison, 88, of St. Peter Apartments, Columbia, passed away on Monday, April 12, 2021 at home. He was born in Columbia, son of the late Reuben S. and Margie M. Kauffman Morrison. Reuben worked at A&P Supermarkets and Jamesway before his retirement. He was a member of St. James Lutheran Church and was very active in the activities at St. Peter Apartments.

He is survived by one brother: George E. (Karen) Morrison, York and one sister: Karen M. Hallacher, Lancaster. Two nephews: Gary and Paul.

Hazel R. Hoffman Frey

Hazel R. Hoffman Frey, 90, of Mountville, formerly of Landisville, passed away on Sunday, April 11, 2021 at Lancaster General Hospital of natural causes. She was the wife of the late Russell D. Frey, Jr. Hazel was born in Stoverstown, daughter of the late Harry M. and Vernie I. Harold Hoffman. She worked at Revard Popcorn for 25 years before her retirement in 2001.

Hazel is survived by two sons: Terry L. (Faye) Frey, Lititz and Jeffrey D. (Peggy) Frey, Mountville. Three grandsons: Eric Frey, Troy Frey, and Jeffrey Frey, Jr. Four great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters.

Lee C. Ressler

Lee C. Ressler, 81, of Manor Township, passed away on Thursday, April 8, 2021 at Lancaster General Hospital. He was the husband of Edith M. Murry Ressler with whom he celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary on November 8, 2020. He was born in Conestoga, son of the late Amer C. and Helen W. Kreider Ressler. He was a veteran, having served in the National Guard. Lee was a dairy farmer for 20 years. He the worked in the Maintenance Department of Millersville University where he retired Lee was a member of Central Manor Church of God, where he was a custodian. Lee loved to get together with his family.

Surviving in addition to his wife, his children: Brian L. (Jean) Ressler; Tracy L. (David) Ferrick; Douglas S. (Lori) Ressler and Michael S. (Quenetta) Ressler. Twelve grandchildren: Lauren, Megan, Matthew, Samantha, Brooke, Victoria, Alyssa, Christine, Emily, Dougie, Evan and McKenzie. Two great-grandchildren: Emma and Cooper. One brother: Ray (Connie) Ressler. One sister: Leah Jean (Gerald) McMullen, Sr. He was preceded in death by two brothers: William Ressler and Dean Ressler. One sister: Eva Kauffman.

Joel Lynn Umholtz

Joel Lynn Umholtz, 43, of Manor Township, passed away on Friday, April 2, 2021 at home. He was the husband of Jaclyn N. Gerlach Umholtz with whom he celebrated their 18th wedding anniversary on June 22, 2020. He was born in Lancaster, son of Elma E. Buffington Umholtz and the late Leo D. Umholtz. Joel was a pipefitter, having worked for Frey-Lutz for 17 years. He was a member of House Church and enjoyed doing things around the farmette, camping, hunting, and his family.

Doris L. "Susie" Shyver

Doris Louise "Susie" Shyver, 79, of Lancaster Township, passed away on Monday, April 5, 2021 at home following a lengthy battle with COPD, Emphysema, and Dementia. She was born in Lancaster, daughter of the late Christine M. Weidman, who was killed in an automobile accident when Doris was two years old. She and her only biological sibling, Arthur Weidman were left orphaned, and then legally adopted by their grandparents, the late Harlan J. and Susan B. Weidman. Doris attended Manor Twp. Schools, dropping out of Penn Manor High School in the tenth grade. She received her high school diploma from LaSalle Extension University. Doris, formerly a Lutheran, later became a lifelong member of the Southern Baptist Church and in her earlier years attended Silver Spring Baptist Church. She was a woman of unmatched tenacity, wanting children so badly that she repeatedly put her health, and even her life, on the line to bring new life into the world. She suffered six miscarriages before she finally, after 5 1/2 months of pregnancy, brought her first son forth at 1 pound 7 1/2 ounces. His name is Larry M. Shyver, III. She brought him home three months later, when he reached five pounds. He is now 56, with two children of his own. After several more miscarriages, she produced a daughter at 6 1/2 months, weighing 3 pounds 3 ounces, and her name is Christina M. Shyver-Plank. She is now 54 and married. Finally with her twelfth pregnancy, she had her youngest son, at 7 1/2 pounds, born at 8 1/2 months. He is 46 years old now and his name is Vernon B. Shyver, married with three children of his own. Doris was a wonderful, loving mother, having worked at Adler Shoe Store on King Street, when first married and later at Lancaster Quality Inn, Family Dollar, Columbia and Gramp's Store, Mountville. Doris shared 63 years and 7 months with her husband Larry M. Shyver, Jr., who survives.

Surviving in addition to her husband are her three children, and five grandchildren. One adopted brother: (biological Uncle) Donald "Sam" Weidman. Numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her biological brother: Arthur Weidman

Ellen C. Overmeyer Wilson

Ellen C. Snyder Overmeyer Wilson, 88, of Mountville passed away on Friday, March 26, 2021 at Lancaster General Hospital surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of the late John W. Overmeyer and the late Edward R. Wilson, Jr. She was born in Columbia, daughter of the late W. Scott and Emily Collier Snyder. Ellen was a graduate of Donegal High School, Class of 1950; a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church and she enjoyed her family and traveling. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Ellen was the last of her immediate family.

She is survived by one son: John C. (Pam) Overmeyer. Four daughters: Nancy Roland; Ann (Jeffrey) Smith; Mary (Roger) Stoltzfus; and Joan (Dale) Becker. Six grandchildren: Mike Roland, Nicole Driscoll, Andrew Becker, William Smith, Abigail and Olivia Overmeyer. Three great-grandsons: Chase Roland, Finnegan and Rhys Driscoll. She was preceded in death by one brother: Lester Snyder.

Christine B. Fortier

Christine B. Fortier, 73, formerly of Landisville passed away on Monday, March 22, 2021 at Masonic Village. She was the loving wife of Norman J. Fortier with whom she celebrated 50 years of marriage. Chris was born in Essex, England, daughter of the late Norman A. and Beatrice M. Burley Boyd. After moving from England, she held various positions as an administrative assistant before staying home to raise her two children. Chris later went on to work for various real estate companies including RE/MAX of Lancaster.

Christine was a member of Church of the Apostles UCC and enjoyed gardening, the outdoors, traveling, the beach and spending winters in Florida. Above all else, she loved spending time with her friends, family and especially her grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, Chris is survived by her son, Jamie A. Fortier, Fort Lauderdale, FL and her daughter, Jillian L. (Anthony) Stauffer, Lancaster as well as her brother Andrew (Martha) Boyd of Gettysburg. She also will be greatly missed by her grandchildren, Gabrielle Fortier, Marc Fortier, Brady Stauffer and Wyatt Stauffer.

Harriet H. Keene

Harriet H. Keene, 94, of Manor Township, passed away on Thursday, March 18, 2021. She was the wife of Wayne C. Keene. Harriet was born in Elizabeth township, daughter of the late Peter M. Risser and Suzannah Hershey Risser Keller. She worked at the former St. Joseph Hospital as an LPN for 28 years, and also in the patient accounts and engineering departments, before her retirement in 1994. Harriet was a member of Millersville Bible Church, volunteered at St. Joseph Hospital, was an avid flower gardener, and was the last of her immediate family.

Surviving in addition to her husband, one son: Darrel L. Ament, Willow Street. One step-son: Allen W. (Linda) Keene, Mechanicsburg. Two step-daughters: Nancy (Anthony) Clark, Ephrata and Joyce (Craig) Simonium, Armenia. Two grandsons: James and Michael Ament. Three step-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son: R. Mark D. Hess

Mark D. Hess, 62, of Conestoga, passed away on Saturday, March 13, 2021 at Lancaster General Hospital. He was born in Lancaster, son of the late Fred M. and Yvonne Kay Herr Hess. Mark worked in the printing industry for about 30 years. He was a longtime member of Riverside Camping Association, where he was an avid pool player and the Pequea Boat Club. He enjoyed playing the drums, loved music, especially Blues and Rock, going to the beach, sharks, and loved animals. He also loved his family and friends and was known to them as "Pirate". His pride and joy was his Jeep Wrangler and he loved to have a good time.

He is survived by one son: Cory J. (Ashley A.) Hess, Lancaster. One daughter: Sara M. Hess and her boyfriend, Matthew B. Havens, Harrisburg. One sister: Chrisandra K. (Brendan) Davis, Mountville.

Marjorie W. "Margie" Pape

Marjorie W. "Margie" Pape, 66, of West Hempfield Township, passed away on Sunday, March 14, 2021 at home. She was the wife of James D. Pape with whom she celebrated their 27th wedding anniversary on February 5, 2021. She was born in Lancaster, daughter of the late Willard W. and Helen Inglefield Welch. Margie was an Admissions Coordinator at Elizabethtown College before her retirement. She was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church and loved being a mom and grandmother.

Surviving in addition to her husband, her children: Matthew R. (Julia) Aument, Olivia R. (Rodger) Atwood, Amelia A. Pape and Ian J. (Katie) Pape, all of Mountville. Raymond "Ray" Thorsen

Raymond "Ray" Thorsen, 92, of Mountville, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, March 14, 2021 at Lancaster General Hospital. He was the husband of Margaret Villiger Thorsen, his beloved wife of 67 years. He was born in Brooklyn, NY, son of the late Thor and Molly Jensen Thorsen. Raymond grew up in the Bay Ridge section of Brooklyn, where he attended Fort Hamilton High School. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the US Navy as a firefighter. During his time in the Navy, he was stationed at the US Navy Training Center in Bainbridge, MD and aboard the heavy cruiser USS Columbus (CA-74). He attended the State University of New York and Pratt Institute, where he studied visual communications and graphic design. Raymond was an expert craftsman and member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners Local No. 45. He worked as a custom cabinet maker and later as an installer of custom hardwood floors. His work can be found in many high profile and historic locations within the New York metropolitan area, such as the Empire State Building and the Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration. Raymond was a generous, hard-working man of integrity, with a quiet persona who cared deeply for his family and was always there to support them. Although he lived his later years in Pennsylvania, there was never any question that his Brooklyn roots were always a part of him. While raising his family of three boys, he gave generously of his time as a youth baseball coach, manager and umpire. He was a life-long, avid golfer who enjoyed playing golf with his wife, family and friends. He enjoyed his vacations with his wife and family, and especially summers spent in Stone Harbor, NJ. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Surviving in addition to his wife, two sons: Richard Thorsen and his wife Sharon, Monroe, NY and John Thorsen and his wife Tracie, Lancaster. Seven grandchildren: Tyler, Christine, Adam, Eric, Vickie, Katie and John Raymond Thorsen. One sister: Vera Thorne, Lecanto, FL. He was preceded in death by his son: Robert Thorsen; one brother: Thor Thorsen; and one sister: Eva Sherland.

Catherine E. Smythe

Catherine E. Smythe, 102, of St. Anne's Retirement Community, a sweet, gentle soul, passed away on Saturday, March 13, 2021 at St. Anne's. She remained in her own apartment until shortly before her passing. She was the wife of the late W. Everett Smythe, who passed away on April 16, 1989. She was born in Lampeter Township, daughter of the late Aaron and Florence Landis Lefever. Catherine worked at Eagle Parachute Company and the Hempfield United Methodist Church Mother's Morning Out Program, where she was a member of the church. She enjoyed sewing, crossword and jigsaw puzzles, word games, looking out her window seeing the clouds and sky, flowers and the beautiful sunsets.

She is survived by her children: Leon E. Smythe, San Diego, CA; Dolores A. Smythe, Gordonville, Lois E. Smith, Mountville; Peggy S. (Jeffrey D.) Frey, Columbia and Russell L. Smythe, Lancaster. Five grandchildren: Steven M. Smith, Jr.; Dennis Smythe; Angela M. Smith; Amy L. (Matthew) Fasnacht and Matthew R. (Ryan) Brown. Two step-grandchildren: Jeffrey D. Frey, Jr. and Chrissy Kihm. Doreen W. Fry

Doreen W. Fry, 80, of Lancaster, passed away on Tuesday, March 9, 2021. She was the wife of the late Robert G. Fry. Doreen was born in New Ringgold, daughter of the late Clarence K. and Althea Adams Wertman. She worked at RR Donnelley & Sons and was a clerk for the US Postal Service before her retirement. She enjoyed gardening and her dogs.

Aaron R. Dowhen, 38, of Manor Township, passed away on Saturday, March 6, 2021 at home from a long battle with autoimmune disease. He was the husband of Rebecca A. Aaron was a track-loader operator for BR Kreider & Son, Inc. for 14 years and he attended Manor Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife and parents, two sons: Chase R. (10) and Wyatt D. (8) Dowhen. One sister: Amanda J. (Brian) Zuschmidt, Lancaster. Father-in-law and mother-in-law: David A. (Diane L.) Schaeffer, Mountville.

The Memorial Service will be held at Manor Church, 530 Central Manor Road, Lancaster on Saturday, March 13, 2021 at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor John Pletcher, officiating. Paul J. Mason, Jr.

Paul J. Mason, Jr., 66, of Maytown, passed away on Sunday, March 7, 2021 at Lancaster General Hospital, from complications of COVID-19. He was the husband of Connie L. Charles Mason with whom he celebrated their 9th wedding anniversary in February. He was born in Wilkes-Barre, son of the late Paul J., Sr. and Margaret M. Dooley Mason. He was a cook for Y&S Candies for 25 years and a custodian for Penn Manor School District before his retirement. He loved music and was a self-taught drummer; was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan; and he loved the outdoors, including gardening and lawn work. Paul loved his family and friends.

Surviving in addition to his wife, one daughter: Stephanie (Scott) Moore. Three step-children: Faith Smith, Crystal (Jeff) Albert and Christopher (Kierra) Boyer. Nine grandchildren. One sister: Carolyn Hargarten. He was preceded in death by one sister: Margaret Peterson.

Bertha B. Finkbiner

Bertha B. Finkbiner, 95, of Calvary Fellowship Homes, passed away on Sunday, February 28, 2021 at her residence following an extended illness. She was the wife of Lloyd H. Finkbiner with whom she would have celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary on May 28, 2021. She was born in Lancaster, daughter of the late Walter and Bertha Hermes Boose. Bertha was a graduate of JP McCaskey High School, a very active member of Mountville Church of the Brethren and enjoyed family visits, camping, flower arranging, baking and cooking.

She is survived by her children: L. Douglas (Kimberly) Finkbiner; Cindy (Jack) Abel; Robert (Robbin) Finkbiner and Carol (Sam) Field. Six grandchildren: Heather L. (Darryn A.) Peffley; Meagan C. (Matthew G.) Nowak; Kelly L. (Hunter) Mayfield; Sean D. (Katelyn) Finkbiner; Michael P. (Morgan S.) Field; and Michelle L. (Aaron M.) Myers. Eight great-grandchildren and one on the way. Sisters: Nancy McAvoy and Shirley (Calvin) Wenger. She was preceded in death by five brothers and four sisters.

Graveside Service and Burial will be at Mountville Brethren Cemetery on Saturday, March 6, 2021 at 2:00 P.M. COVID-19 protocols must be followed. Nancy J. Duke Bender Rineer

Nancy J. Duke Bender Rineer, 93, of Lancaster, passed away on Sunday, February 28, 2021 at Kadima Rehabilitation and Nursing, Lititz. She was the wife of the late Chester M. Bender, who passed away in March of 1977 and Walter L. Rineer, who passed away in October of 2007. She was born in Lancaster, daughter of the late Roy E. and Naomi Spang Duke. Nancy worked as an assembler at KD Tools before her retirement. She was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Mountville and enjoyed going to the Women's Group at the Salvation Army; the Millersville Senior Center and her family.

She is survived by four grandchildren: Jason Bender, Jennifer Jones, Derrick Bender and Sabrina Vigil. Eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son: Chester L. Bender and one daughter: Linda L. Jones. Two brothers and four sisters.
