Verna Marie Weidman

Verna Marie Weidman, 89, of Millersville, passed away on Monday, August 15, 2022 at home, with her loving family by her side. She was the wife of Stanley Denlinger Weidman, to whom she would have been married for almost 70 years. She was born in Manor Township, daughter of the late Ira Frey and Helen Irene Frey Gerlach.

Verna was an active member of Central Manor Church of God. Over the years she taught Sunday school, played the organ and piano, sang in the choir, and assisted with the financial bookkeeping. She was part of the Gerlach Quartet and ministered in music at many local churches. Verna and her husband Stanley, owned Weidman's Greenhouse, Central Manor for many years. She enjoyed cross-stitching, crocheting, flower gardening and being surrounded by her family.

She is survived by two daughters: Jean Long and Darlene Weidman, both of Millersville. Two grandchildren: Stanley Dean (Melissa) Weidman, Jr., Rhode Island and Jennifer Anne Weidman, Thailand. One daughter-in-law: Linda Anne Weidman, Thailand. Three great-granddaughters: Riko, Harper and Calle Weidman. Two brothers: Ira Norman (Elaine) Gerlach, Lancaster and Earl Benjamin Gerlach, Millersville. She was preceded in death by one son: Stanley Dean Weidman and one sister: Grace Irene Newswanger.

Sarah A. Peifer

Sarah A. Peifer, 88, of Lancaster, went to be with her Lord and Savior in the presence of family and friends on Wednesday, August 10, 2022 at home. She was the wife of the late Melvin R. Peifer, who passed away in May of 1995. She was born in Lancaster, daughter of the late Calvin G. and Anna Stauffer Lilley. She was an LPN at St. Anne's Retirement Community for 30 years before her retirement in 2002. Sarah was a member of Faith Bible Fellowship Church and enjoyed making crafts, cooking and entertaining family and friends.

She is survived by one son: Richard L. (Cathy) Peifer, New Providence. One daughter: Wendy B. (David) Smith, Washington Boro. Five grandchildren: Brian, Joshua, Cody, Amanda and Rebekah. Three great-grandchildren: Hope, Eli and Lucas. Siblings: Doris Clark, Roberta Groff, Grace Hass, Jeff Lilley and Edith Kauffman. She was preceded in death by one daughter: Barb Neff; Granddaughter: Victoria Peifer and Brother: Richard Lilley.

Lillie S. Stauffer

Lillie S. Stauffer, 94, of Lancaster, passed away on Wednesday, August 10, 2022 at home. Lillie was loved, adored and respected by all of her family and friends. She was the wife of the late Ray H. Stauffer. She was born in Lancaster, daughter of the late Elmer D. and Anna Mildred Nicodemus Smith. Lillie was a bailiff at the Lancaster County Courthouse for 17 years before her retirement in 2008. She attended Calvary Church and enjoyed square dancing, traveling, archery and was on the world-class archery team.

She is survived by two sons: Ray D. (Theora) Stauffer, Lancaster County and Tedd S. (Janet) Stauffer, York County. Two daughters: Barbara J. (Ralph) Kreider, Lancaster County and Karen M. (Jeffrey) Sechrist, Henderson, NV. Eight grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Also, three brothers. She was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.

Porter E. “Gene” Long

“I prayed to the LORD, and He answered me."

Porter E. Long, 78, of Mountville, passed away at home on Friday, July 29, 2022. He was born in Braxton County, WV, the son of the late Emery and Arzoma Smallwood Long. Porter was the youngest of seven children. He was in construction and worked as a foreman, having worked for Whiting and Turner Contracting Co., Baltimore, for 15 years before he retired. He was a Veteran of the US Army, fought in the Vietnam war, and was honorably discharged in 1970. Once he retired, if he wasn't spending time with his family, he would spend his Friday nights playing shuffleboard and hanging out with his friends in Maryland.

Gene had the biggest heart when it came to his family. He would do absolutely anything for them. There is nothing in this world that meant more to him than his two daughters and his grandchildren. His only downfall was caring too much. He helped anyone in need and always worried about the less fortunate. He hated to see anyone suffer, especially family. He loved all types of animals, especially his cat Cookie, who holds a special place in his heart and kept him company for the past 9 years. She has joined him at the rainbow bridge since his passing.

He is survived by two daughters: Christina M. (Daniel E.) Smith, East Prospect and Cynthia M. (Nate R.) Eshleman, Columbia. Four grandchildren: Austin, Cassandra, Caden, and Cierstyn. One great-granddaughter: Sophia. Two step-grandchildren: Lexi and Justice. Two brothers: Willis (Janet) Long, Darlington, MD, and Guy Long, North Carolina. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter Cayleigh Slover and his sister, Mildred “Sis” Goodwin.

Bradley C. Wilson, 64, of Columbia, passed away on Friday, July 29, 2022 at Lancaster General Hospital. He was born in Dallastown, son of Kenneth M. Wilson, Red Lion and the late Jocleta O. Frey Wilson. He was a graphic arts designer for Articus, Ltd. He enjoyed traveling, flowers, gardening, carpentry work around the house and entertaining people.

Brenda C. Harker

Brenda C. Harker, 73, of Trinity House Apartments, Columbia, passed away on Saturday, July 30, 2022 at Lancaster General Hospital. She was born in Lewistown, daughter of the late Robert C. and Emory Smith Snyder. She was an Elvis Presley fan and enjoyed word-find books.

She is survived by two sons: Anthony W. (Myrna J.) Helsel, Manheim and Robert C. Harker, Lewistown. Three grandchildren and two great-granddaughters. Siblings: Raymond (Barb) Smith, Thompsontown; Donna Snyder and Harold Snyder, both of Downingtown. She was preceded in death by one sister: Mary Sunderland and one brother: William Shaeffer.

Sharon R. Schauer, 65, of Lancaster, passed away on Monday, July 25, 2022 . She was the wife of Gerald W. Schauer to whom she was married for 31 years. She was the daughter of the late Richard and Jeanne M. Nehren Sweater. Sharon was a Veteran of the US Army, attended Columbia Church of God, loved animals, her pets and enjoyed gardening and landscaping. She was honorable, hard-working and a very caring individual. She will be deeply missed and loved by her husband.

Pauline Marie Stoner

Pauline Marie Stoner, 93, of Lancaster, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 23, 2022. She was born in Lancaster, daughter of the late Benjamin M. and Amanda Dambach Stoner. Polly graduated from Manor Joint High School where she was active in the Glee Club, Cheerleading, Dance Band, Orchestra and was a member of the National Honor Society. Following high school, Polly attended and graduated from Lebanon Valley College, Class of 1950, where she was the Secretary of the Senior Class. She enjoyed a lifelong love of music and was an excellent pianist and participated in the Glee Club, Women's Band, and Cheerleading while at LVC. The comments in her senior yearbook at LVC summarized Polly well: "Popular, sincere, everyone's friend, campus beauty, always smiling and an asset to her class." That said it all. Polly was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Mountville.

Surviving are her nieces and nephews: Bruce Hershock, Beth Hershock Metzger, Brian Hershock, Lisa Stoner Mickle, Greg Stoner and Ryan Stoner. She was preceded in death by one sister: Ruth Arlene Hershock and one brother: Robert D. Stoner.

Philip E. Lenhert, Sr.

Philip E. Lenhert, Sr., 82, of Wrightsville, passed away on Friday, July 29, 2022 at home. He was the husband of Sandra J. Roberts Lenhert with whom he celebrated their 60th anniversary on February 3, 2022. He was born in Lancaster, son of the late Claude A. and Dellia Wiseman Lenhert. Philip was a machinist for High Steel Structures for more than 30 years before his retirement in 2003. He was a veteran of the US Navy, was an avid bowler who enjoyed woodworking and crafts. He was a member of the Navy Club #166, Lancaster. Philip loved his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Surviving in addition to his wife, his children: Leslie Ann Gainer (companion of Matthew Schlager), Philip (Sandra A.) Lenhert, Jr. and Michael S. Lenhert (companion of Deborah Hughes). Eight grandchildren: Megan, Lauren, Caitlin, Morgan, Kelsey, Kendall, Wesley and Zachary. Six great-grandchildren: Hailey, Joelle, Lukas, Adeline, Alex and Ryleigh. He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.

Rev. Dr. Howard W. Fritz

Rev. Dr. Howard W. Fritz, 90, of West Hempfield Township, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on Monday, July 18, 2022 at home. Howie was the husband of Marion Burrell Fritz with whom he recently celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary. He was born in Columbus, OH, son of the late Howard Lucian and Sarah Edna VanLeusen Fritz. Howie graduated from Yonkers High School, Class of 1950. He was a retired member of the Presbytery of Donegal and Parish Associate of Wayside Presbyterian Church. He began his ministry as a pastor (officer) in the Salvation Army; served as a Chaplain (Colonel) in the US Army and served pastorates in New Jersey, Korea, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Surviving in addition to his wife, his four children: Kimberlee (Tom) Comerford, New Jersey; Stephen (Margaret "Meg") Fritz, Pennsylvania; John Fritz, West Virginia and Andrew "Andy", New Jersey. Fourteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. One daughter-in-law: Leah Fritz, Pennsylvania. He was preceded in death by one son: Howard Fritz, Jr. and one sister: Evelyn Beaumont.

Marilyn P. Habecker

Marilyn P. Habecker, 85, a resident of Calvary Fellowship Homes, formerly of Ephrata, passed away on Tuesday, July 19, 2022. She was the wife of Harry S. Habecker. She was born in Reading, daughter of the late Rev. Rodney J. and Hazel M. Harding Lutz. Marilyn was a graduate of Ephrata High School, Class of 1954; the Reading School of Nursing, Class of 1957 and the Millersville University, Class of 1973. She was employed as a school nurse at Higbee Elementary School (now the Martin Luther King Elementary School, Lancaster.) She owned and operated Maria Liss Bridals (1981-1992); was a tour planner and escort for Bob Neff Tours (1993-2003) and was a member of Calvary Church. Marilyn enjoyed music, taught piano and organ, and was a church organist and pianist for several area churches. She enjoyed flowers and had beautiful flower gardens wherever she lived.

Surviving in addition to her husband, her children: Lyril J. Haneman, Lancaster and Lori J. (Rev. Timothy) McCracken, Fresno, CA. Three grandchildren: Jenny (Dr. Max) Parish; Kaylee (Simon) Parish (sisters married brothers) and Connor (Brittany) McCracken. Seven great-grandchildren: Graham, Miles, and Emmett Parish and Titus, Emory, Katelynn and Ellia Parish.

B. Jane Smith, 89, formerly of Washington Boro, passed away on Wednesday, July 20, 2022 at Masonic Village. She was the wife of the late Donald L. "Hook" Smith, Sr., who passed away on December 9, 2004. She was born in Camden, NJ, daughter of the late Chester and Bessie Carman Sayers. Jane attended Manor Church and was a member of Sell Chapel. She was an avid Philadelphia Phillies fan and had worked at Byers Pastry, Columbia.

She is survived by three sons: Donald L. (Susan) Smith, Jr.; Barry L. (Dianne) Smith; and Mark E. (Dana) Smith, all of Washington Boro. One daughter: Debbie S. (David) Rill, Mount Joy. Nine grandchildren, twenty-one great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren, one step-grandchild and three step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one grandson: Kevin B. Smith, one sister: Hazel Peters and one brother: Allen Sayers.

Joseph L. Datesman

Joseph L. Datesman, 75, of Columbia, passed away on Monday, July 18, 2022 at home. He was the husband of Judy A. Camplese Datesman. He was born in Columbia, son of the late George and Bertha Lehman Datesman. He was a Retired Pennsylvania State Trooper and was a member of the PA Army National Guard. He was a Penn State Football and Green Bay Packers fan, and he enjoyed going to Stone Harbor and Williamsburg, hunting, (including Elk hunting in Colorado), fishing, and golfing. He was a member of the Columbia-Middletown BPOE #1074.

Alice J. Dannelley, 75, of Lancaster, passed away on Saturday, June 25, 2022. She was the wife of the late George N. Dannelley, Jr. Alice was born in Joplin, MO, daughter of the late George and Ivene Napier Scheurich. She worked in the office of Kunzler and Company, Inc. for 30 years before her retirement. She loved her family, gardening, going to the beach at Ocean City, MD, and was an avid Penn State and Philadelphia Eagles football fan.

She is survived by one son: George N. (Lori) Dannelley, III, Ephrata. One grandson: James Conley, III, Ephrata. Five brothers: Alan (Tammy) Scheurich, Lancaster; Neil

Linda Kay Kaufman

Linda Kay Kaufman, 67, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 1, 2022 at HPH Hospice House, Lecanto, FL, after a brief illness. She was the wife of the late Kenneth L. Kaufman, who preceded her in death in 2005. Born in Columbia, she was the daughter of the late Phyllis and Schuyler Gamber. She graduated from Columbia High School in 1972. She retired in 2020 from Perform Group, formerly Tighe Industries, after being a loyal employee for over 30 years. Once retired, Linda decided to leave the winters of Pennsylvania behind and move to Florida. This move allowed her to be closer to her grandchildren and pursue many of her other interests. She was an avid kayaker and enjoyed the wildlife that Florida had to offer.

Linda loved animals and was blessed to have the companionship of several dogs during her lifetime. She was a volunteer at the Citrus County Humane Society and helping to care for the animals brought her tremendous joy.

Linda is survived by her two loving daughters: Shemane R. Brambilla, wife of Michael Brambilla, Homosassa, FL and Marissa L. Walley, wife of Simon Walley, Overland Park, KS. Five grandchildren: Mikayla, Shea and Aaron Brambilla; and Emily and Samantha Walley. Two sisters: Margaret S., wife of Robert Warner and Laurie A., wife of Aloys “John” Heyen. One brother: Michael S., husband of Cindy Walker Gamber. Also a number of other loving relatives and close friends.

Elvin L. Reitz

Elvin L. Reitz, 75, of East Hempfield Township, passed away on Monday, June 13, 2022 at home. He was the husband of Ruth A. Miller Reitz with whom he would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on November 25, 2022. He was born in Dalmatia, son of the late Woodrow and Eleanor Shaeffer Reitz. Elvin was a truck driver for Southern Container for 29 years and also for Dart Container before his retirement. He served in the Brethren Volunteer Service for a two year term. Elvin was a member of Lancaster Alliance Church, was a driver to take people to appointments as well as the Amish. He enjoyed genealogy, loved cats, traveling and was a very friendly person.

Dawn Marie Hallman

Dawn Marie Hallman, 47, of Brownstown, took her last breath here on earth and first breath at the gates of heaven on Sunday, June 12, 2022 at 3:07 A.M. at Lancaster General Hospital. Dawn was the wife of Jeffrey T. Hallman with whom she celebrated their 5th wedding anniversary on December 17, 2021. She was born in Pottstown, daughter of Sharon (Will) Snyder Neff and the late Ronald Scandle. Dawn enjoyed spending every moment that she could with her husband, kids and grandbabies, swimming and shopping at Victoria's Secret PINK. She will always be remembered for her amazing smile, open arms and her loving heart.

Judy W. Bender

Judy W. Bender, 81, of Lancaster, passed away on Monday, June 13, 2022 at home. She was born in Conestoga, daughter of the late J. Abram and Lois Warfel Herr. She worked as a hostess at Columbia Diner before her retirement. Her family was the joy of her life.

She is survived by one daughter: Cindy L. (Maynard L., Jr.) Groff, Pequea. Two grandchildren: Nicole (Jeremy W.) Stauffer, Millersville and Matthew R. (Laura) Groff, Washington Boro. Three great-grandchildren: Bennett and Kayden Stauffer and Riley Groff. Siblings: Rose (Donnie) Frey, Lancaster; Dana (Phyllis) Herr, Breezewood and Hope (Chet) Arment, Landisville. She was preceded in death by one son: Steven D. Bender.

Anne I. Dunfee

Anne I. Dunfee, 87, of Mountville, passed away on Friday, June 10, 2022. She was the wife of the late Henry W. Dunfee who passed away in 1998. She was born in Philadelphia, daughter of the late William H. and Alice Wilke Smith. Anne enjoyed bingo, going to the casino, animals (especially her cats), rose bushes, watching old movies, old music, and going out with her family.

She is survived by her children: Sandra L. Dunfee, East Hempfield Twp.; Harry W. (Mary) Dunfee, Sharon Hill; Alice E. Dunfee, Florida and Steve (Lynda) Dunfee, Mountville. Fourteen grandchildren: Lia, Dawn, Miki, Edward, Stephanie, Harry, Jr., Katie, Phillip, Jr., Jamie, Brian, Melissa, Willie, David and Kelly. Numerous great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son and daughter-in-law: Phillip (Sue) Dunfee; one brother: Bill Smith; and one sister: Marie Dietz.
