Joseph W. “Joe” Fleckenstein, Sr., 88, lifelong resident of Columbia, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by the people who loved him most on Wednesday, October 21, 2026. He was the husband of Lola L. Donnan Fleckenstein, to whom he was married for 65 years. He was born in Columbia, son of the late Joseph H. and Helen Fischer Fleckenstein.
Joe proudly served in the US Air Force and often reminisced about his time stationed in Texas, a chapter of his life he remembered with pride. Joe was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, and worked at Harris Hub and Lancaster Leaf and Tobacco, where he enjoyed repairing equipment and socializing with his coworkers.
Affectionately known as “Old Pap” to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Joe was a devoted family man whose love was shown in countless everyday ways. He took great pride in his family and cherished the time they spent together. Whether watching his great-grandsons play football for Lancaster Catholic, or sneaking sweet treats to his great-grandchildren, Joe found his greatest happiness in being surrounded by family. He could often be found in his basement workshop, building beautiful pieces of furniture for his family. He also enjoyed puttering around the yard, mowing the grass, and caring for his home. The house held a special place in his heart, as it was the home where he grew up and where he spent most of his life. Joe enjoyed trips to Roots Market, where he would pass by the produce stands and head straight for the bakery. Joe loved his sweets and loved sharing them generously with his great-grandchildren. He lived a life rooted in family, hard work, and the comforts of home. Joe leaves behind a family who loved him dearly and who will carry his memory forward in the stories they share and the many ways he made their lives better. He will be deeply missed.
Surviving in addition to his wife, his sons: Joseph W. (Becky) Fleckenstein, Jr., and John Fleckenstein. Seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. His brother: Lou (Janet) Fleckenstein. He was preceded in death by his sister: Helen Smith.
