Thomas G. Welsh

Thomas G. Welsh, 79, of Columbia, passed away on Thursday, February 20, 2020 at home. He was the husband of Flora A. Hertz Welsh. He was born in Columbia, son of the late Cleon, Sr. and Iona Weaver Welsh. He was a printer, having worked at Mountville Wallpaper Company and Hanover Wallpaper Company for 30 years before his retirement.

Surviving in addition to his wife, three sons: Thomas (Becky) Welsh, Jr.; Joseph (Sherry) Welsh; and Grant Garner. One step-son: Scott (Kerrie) Brewster. One step-daughter: Heather (Robert) Butler. Eleven grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. Five step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers: Cleon Welsh, Jr.; Edward Welsh; and Albert Welsh and two sisters: Phyllis Welsh and Shirley.

The Celebration of Life will be held at the Columbia Fire Company, 726 Manor Street, Columbia, on Friday, February 28,2020 from 10:00 A.M. to 1:30 P.M. Barbara K. Yake

Barbara K. Yake, 68, formerly of West Hempfield Township passed away on Friday, February 21, 2020 at Susquehanna Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was the wife of the late James A. Yake, Sr. who passed away on April 29, 2014. She was born in Harrisburg, daughter of the late Irvin and Betty Bowman Heller, and she enjoyed crossword puzzles, social events, TV shows, movies, spending time talking and she enjoyed her family.

She is survived by one son: James A. Yake, Jr., Mount Joy. One brother: Robert Heller and one sister: Judy Sandefer, both of Harrisburg.

Jane M. Dietrich

Jane M. Dietrich, 60, of York, passed away on Tuesday, February 18, 2020 at home. She was the wife of J. Douglas Dietrich with whom she would have celebrated their 29th wedding anniversary on June 30, 2020. She was born in York, daughter of Norma Jean Kinard Kline, York and the late Glenn O. Kline. She was a clerical worker for McCrory's for more than 20 years and also worked at Apple Outdoor Supply. She was a member of Locust Grove United Church of Christ and was a lifetime member of the York Fairgrounds Society. She enjoyed reading, watching her son race and the mountains.

Surviving in addition to her husband and mother, one son: Dalton G. Dietrich, York and his fiance Whitney Wisner, Hanover. One brother: John (Carrie) Kline, York. One niece: Brianne and one nephew: Tyler.

Josephine M. Misal, 88 of Columbia, passed away on Monday, February 17, 2020. She was the wife of the late Charles A. Misal. Josephine was born in Laureldale, daughter of the late Charles D. and Florence M. Frankhouser Fritz. She was of the Protestant faith and enjoyed helping in the kitchen at local churches. She was a Girl Scout leader and also enjoyed flowers, gardening and her family.

She is survived by her children: Carl A. (Sharon E.) Misal; Carol A. (James L.) Martin; Bruce A. Misal, all of Columbia, and Bonnie L. (the late David H., Sr.) Aulthouse, Mount Joy. Twelve grandchildren, twenty-nine great-grandchildren, and four great--great-grandchildren. One brother: Victor (Marga) Fritz, Homestead, FL. She was preceded in death by one son: Charles W. Misal, Sr.; baby-boy Misal; one grandson: Charles W. Misal, Jr.; one granddaughter: Stephanie Misal Lefever; brothers: William and David Fritz.

Ellene N. Lefever

Ellene N. Lefever, 94, of Landis Homes, passed away on Monday, February 10, 2020 at her residence, surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of the late Paul B. Lefever, who passed away on December 25, 2004. She was born in East Lampeter Township, daughter of the late Rev. Harry N. and Katie H. Denlinger Neff. She was a member of Mellinger Mennonite Church. Ellene enjoyed flowers, her pen-pal ministry to those who are incarcerated, her family, and she was a gentle, kind, and humble person.

She is survived by one daughter: Nancy L. (Raymond E.) Reitz, Manor Twp. One son: J. Paul (Suzanne) Lefever, Xenia, OH. Four grandchildren: Jennifer (Phil) Kratz; Erika (Kris) Good; Sara (Jesse) Pellman; and Chandler Lefever. Nine great-granchildren. Four sisters: Marian Martin; Betty Martin; Alma (Luke) Martin; and Evelyn (Hershey) Hostetter. She was preceded in death by one daughter: Shirley L. Forney and seven siblings: Dorothy Hershey, John Neff, Clarence Neff, Lloyd Neff, Mervin Neff, Grace Reitz, and Harry Neff, Jr.

Nancy J. Gentzler

Nancy J. Gentzler, 87, of Country Meadows, Leader Heights went to meet her Lord and Savior on Saturday, February 8, 2020 surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of the late William R. Gentzler who passed away on July 9, 2009. She was born in Columbia, daughter of the late Sherman G. and Edna F. Ryan Greider. She was an inspector for Bendix Corp. for 19 years and also for Wyeth Laboratories for 14 years before her retirement in 1988. She was a member of Freysville Emmanuel UCC and enjoyed traveling; baking, especially making sand-tarts and she loved her cat Billy.

Jay L. Smith

Jay L. Smith, 75, passed away quietly and peacefully on Friday, February 7, 2020 at home. He was the husband of Debora S. Shelly Smith, with whom he celebrated their 19th wedding anniversary on June 10, 2019. He was born in Mountville, son of the late Isabella Hoffman. He was a mason/bricklayer, having worked for Witmer & McCoy Masonry for 30 years and B & D Masonry for 6 years before his retirement. Jay was a veteran of the US Army, serving during the Korean Conflict. He enjoyed yardwork, especially his Canna Lilies. Jay loved and enjoyed his family, and was a drummer and sound-tech for the County Line Band.

Surviving in addition to his wife, one daughter: Sherri R. (Keith) Young. One son: Adam J. Smith. Two grandchildren: Sabrina and Jayden Young. Two step-grandchildren: Autumn and Conner. One brother: Jim Smith and one sister: Kay Hoffman. He was preceded in death by one brother: Ray Hoffman.

Susan M. Lewis

Susan M. Lewis, 63, of Lancaster, passed away on Wednesday, February 5, 2020 at Lancaster General Hospital. She was the wife of William D. Lewis with whom she celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary on December 1, 2019. She was born in Lancaster, daughter of the late Harry R. "Sam" and Marian Glick Wade. She worked as an assistant cafeteria manager for the Hempfield School District for 22 years before her retirement. Susan enjoyed softball, baseball, and was an avid Atlanta Braves fan. She also enjoyed dogs and her Shetland Shelties.

She was preceded in death by her brother, David Wade.

Joseph J. Mele, Sr.

Joseph J. Mele, Sr., 87, of West Hempfield Township passed away on Sunday, February 2, 2020 at Hospice and Community Care. He was the husband of Holly Fisher Mele with whom he celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary on September 9, 2019. Mr. Mele was born in Youngstown, OH, son of the late Nicholas J. and Margaret P. McKenna Meley. He was a graduate of Columbia High School, Class of 1951, and the National Association of Life Underwriters in 1982. Joe was an agent for Prudential Insurance Company for 31 years before his retirement. He was a member of Mountville Church of the Brethren where he was also a member of the Finance Committee; a former member of the Columbia Rotary Club; a veteran of the US Army, serving during the Korean Conflict; a member of the American Legion, Post #185, Mount Joy; was a West Hempfield Township Supervisor for 32 years; a member of York Association of Life Underwriters for 29 years; and for many years was a member of the Insurance Workers International Union, Local 162. He enjoyed baseball with the Philadelphia Philiies and the Cleveland Indians being his favorite teams.

(Jodi Yohe) Meley, Jr., Columbia; Margaret (Michael) Haberstroh, Mountville; Lu Ann (Coy) Contres, Columbia; Karen Storm (companion of Charles Kinard), Marietta; Michael (companion of Chris Hess) Mele, Lancaster; and Tess (Kevin) Wolford, Palmyra. Nancy Ruth Martin

Nancy Ruth Martin, 71, of Faith Friendship Ministries, Mountville, passed away peacefully in her sleep, overcome by a recent diagnosis of cancer,on Saturday, January 25, 2020 at Lancashire Hall. She was born in Lincoln, daughter of the late Eli S. and Ruth Dussinger Martin. She was employed by Farmer's First Bank, R.W. Sauder's Eggs, Indian Springs Golf Club and Faith Friendship Ministries. Nancy graduated from Warwick High School, Class of 1966 as a high honor roll student. She attended Hess Mennonite Church and Landisville Mennonite Church where she served her church by teaching Bible School and participating in the Prayer Partner's Sunday School Class. Nancy also enjoyed the Sewing Circle, quilting and other church activitiesShe leaves behind a caring church family at Landisville Mennonite Church, who loved her unconditionally. Nancy suffered most of her adult life with mental illness and had a love for Jesus and looked forward to going to heaven. In the last eight years, Nancy lived with other guests and friends at Faith Friendship Ministries, where Steve and Patty Dietch were directors and currently, Gwendolyn Didden is the director, who lovingly care for those beautiful people. Nancy considered those loving, kind people her extended family.

Ada Mae Barley

Ada Mae Barley (Geemaw), of Millersville, entered into the joy of her master, on Thursday, January 23, 2020 at Homestead Village at the age of 101. She was the daughter of the late Frank and Minnie Keperling Stekervetz. Born and raised in rural Conestoga, she grew up with her 4 brothers: Walter, Mervin, Roy, and George, and her sister Myrtle Breneman; all of whom have preceded her in death.

Ada was the wife of Harold Barley, Sr., who was received by Jesus in 2003. Two sons: Harold, Jr. (2002), and infant son Glenn (1942), a grandson, Donald Siglin, Jr. (2016) and a great-great-granddaughter, Grace Harmon (2011), have gone on before them. Ada is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law: Faye and Donald Siglin; Betty Jane (BJ) and Michael Hykes; and Nancy and Kenneth Witmer. One daughter-in-law: Nancy Brenneman Barley. Her family has grown to 104 members including: 12 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and 30 great-great-grandchildren. In addition, many extended family members and friends will dearly miss their beloved Geemaw Barley.

Ada and Harold were married on March 26, 1938 at the home of the Reverend Amos H. Groff in Narvon. They celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary on March 26, 2002. They bought their dairy farm in Manor Township in 1947 where they raised their family and worked diligently as a team. Ada had a simple faith. God said it, she believed it, and that settled it; and she shared her faith whenever the opportunity presented itself. She attended Manor Church and loved singing the old hymns, and sang them joyfully and accurately even after the mist of dementia clouded her mind. Using and sharing her gift of cooking, gardening, and sewing brought her great pleasure and satisfaction. A family cookbook honoring Geemaw and her recipes, was published in 1994. Above all, she cherished every moment spent with her family, and took great delight in hosting them for homemade meals at the farmhouse.

Family and friends are invited to honor Ada's life and celebrate her home going at Manor Church, 530 Central Manor Road, Lancaster, PA 17603 on Saturday, February 1, 2020 at 10:30 A.M. with Pastor Ross Dunk, officiating. Loretta Tucker

Loretta Tucker, 79, of Columbia, passed away on Wednesday, January 22, 2020 at Hospice and Community Care, Mount Joy. She was born in Mount Holly, NJ, daughter of the late Edward and Anna Bozarth Nixon. She was a telephone operator for Bell Telephone Co., all of her adult life, before retiring in 1997. She was of the Catholic Faith and moved to Pennsylvania with her family in 2001.

She is survived by one daughter: Cheryl A. (Robert L.) Bowman, Columbia. Two grandsons. One sister: Michele (George) Williams, Mount Holly, NJ. Loretta was preceded in death by one son: Gregory T. Tucker.

Gary W. Breniser, Sr.

Gary W. Breniser, Sr., 73, of Manor Township, passed away on Tuesday, January 21, 2020 at Hospice and Community Care, Mount Joy. He was the husband of the late Margaretta J. Rose Breniser. He was born in Elizabeth, NJ, son of the late Harold M. and Ruth Ann Brit Michaels. Gary was a foundry worker for Buck Iron Company for more than 30 years before his retirement. He was a member of the YMCA, Lancaster and enjoyed playing the lottery, traveling,(including cruises), the Minnesota Vikings, spending time with grandchildren and great-grandchildren and he loved his best friend, Cinnamon.

Surviving are his children: Veronica L. Breniser, (companion of Abel); Michael J. (Kelly L.) Breniser; Gary W. (Yvonne L.) Breniser, Jr.; and Christopher L. Breniser. Fourteen grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. Four step-sons and one step daughter. One brother: Harry "Skip" Breniser. He was preceded in death by three brothers.

Wayne E. Smith

Wayne E. Smith, 82, of Manor Township, passed away on Thursday, January 16, 2020, at St. Anne's Retirement Community, with his loving wife by his side, and is now in the safe arms of Jesus. He was the husband of Shirley A. Slagel Smith, with whom he would have celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary on May 3, 2020. He was born in Annville, son of the late Edward L. and Cornelia Mae Simmons Smith. Wayne was a senior research scientist for Armstrong World Industries for 41 years before retiring in 1997. Wayne served in the US Army National Guard. He was a member of Mountville Church of the Brethren where he served as Deacon, Board Member, Sunday School Teacher, Youth Leader, and Groundskeeper; was a Trustee for the Washington Boro Historical Society; was a former Boy Scout leader in the 50's and 60's at Mount Wilson Church, Lebanon; was an avid reader; and enjoyed spending time at his cabin in Juniata County. Wayne was a man of many hats and talents. In 2006, a big change occurred: downsizing, and health issues, plus his loss of eyesight and later Alzheimer's, slowly took over his life. God took him home on January 16, 2020.

Surviving in addition to his wife, four daughters: Wendy Lee McCall, Lancaster; Kathy Marie (David) Funk, Washington Boro; Lori Ann (Late Randy) Barnett, Willow Street; and Sherri Lynn Madonna, Lancaster. He was preceded in death by one brother: Willard Smith and one sister: Shirley Boyer.

Denton Paul "Denny" Ortman

Denton Paul “Denny” Ortman, 77, of York, PA died on Wednesday, January 8, 2020 after a brief illness.

Denny was born in Washington Boro, PA the son of Paul V. and Ruth H. Ortman, who preceded him in death. As a young man, he was a member of the Washington Boro Goodwill Fire Company. Denny graduated from Penn Manor in 1960, Millersville State College in 1965, and the Rochester Institute of Technology in 1967. He served with the 3rd U.S. Army Infantry Regiment (“The Old Guard”), as a sentinel for The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and as an honor guard at President Nixon’s inauguration.

He was employed for many years by Maple Press in York, PA, and later worked at the Defense Logistics Agency until he retired.

Denny was an avid outdoorsman, fisherman, boater, and camper. He served as an assistant Scoutmaster with Troop 50. Denny was also an excellent cook and baker, and his legendary bread will be missed. He was happiest sitting by a campfire with a cup of coffee, knowing that there was a lake or river nearby.

He is survived by his children, Whitney (York, PA) and Tyler (San Francisco, CA), his wife, Anna (House), his brother and sister-in-law Terry and Doris Ortman (Chambersburg, PA), and his cousin, Carol MacDonald (Wrightsville, PA). Denny will be missed by many friends.

Denny was an active member of the York County Support for People with Oral and Head and Neck Cancer. He was extremely grateful for their support over the years.

He was a self-employed Interior Designer, and was a member of Lodge #43 F&AM being a 32nd Degree Mason; the Lancaster Lodge of Perfection; Harrisburg Consistory; Zembo Shrine; Red Rose Memorial VFW Post #2435; Reese Hall VFW Post #8757; BPOE #1074; and Chickies Rock Lodge #307 of the Moose.

Charlie is survived by three brothers: Jeffrey L. (Jean) Sheffer; Keith A. (Barbara) Sheffer; and Gordon R. Sheffer. Also, numerous nieces and nephews.

Graveside Service and Burial will be held at Silver Spring Cemetery on Friday, January 17, 2020 at 1:00 P.M. with Pastor Wayne B. Rohrer. Gerald L. McMullen

Gerald L. McMullen, 62, of Conestoga passed away on Thursday, January 9, 2020 at home. He was the husband of Sally A. Moore McMullen with whom he celebrate their 38th wedding anniversary on May 30, 2019. He was born in Lancaster, son of Gerald S. and Leah Jean Ressler McMullen of Conestoga. He was a shipper/receiver for Lancaster Pump, a Division of CB Tool Company for 43 years, and was a member of Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church of Creswell. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Surviving in addition to his wife and parents, one daughter: Tara A. (Daniel L.) Hess, Willow Street. Two granddaughters: Kylee A. Hess and Karalie E. Hess. Siblings: Cindy (Craig) Frey; Jeff (Barbara) McMullen; Greg (Melanie) McMullen; and Cheryl (Jeff) Bitner.

John S. Engle

John S. Engle, 82, of Lancaster, passed away on Monday, January 6, 2020 following a lengthy illness. He was born in Maytown, son of the late Samuel W. and Rita C. Lawler Engle. He worked as a warehouse manager for Select Security, Inc. and also worked at Hamilton Watch Co. He was a member of St. John Neumann Catholic Church, was a veteran of the US Army during the Vietnam Conflict, and a graduate of Lancaster Catholic High School class of 1955. He enjoyed reading and his passion was music. He was a musician, having played several instruments including the saxophone, clarinet, and the trombone, and was a member of several musical groups throughout his life.

He is survived by two sons: J. Michael (Susan) Engle and Mark O. Engle. One step-daughter: Donna Cody (Charles) Kreider. Four grandchildren and one great-grandson. Two brothers: Donald V. Engle and Dennis H. (Jennifer K.) Engle. One sister: Joan M. (Harry) Rupp. Numerous nieces and nephews.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 601 E. Delp Road, Lancaster, on Friday, January 10, 2020 at 11:00 A.M. The viewing will be from 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. The Final Commendation and Farewell will be in St. Joseph New Catholic Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Please omit flowers.
