Grace Cynthia Brown

Grace Cynthia Brown, infant daughter of Daniel A. and Amelia Harvey Brown, Washington Boro, entered Heaven peacefully in the arms of Jesus, on Sunday, April 1, 2018. Grace was born on Easter Sunday at 2:42 A.M. She was blessed with beautiful, kissable lips and a head full of thick brown hair and lived an entire life of love with her family. Grace has touched so many lives and was strong and continued to fight to meet her parents and family.

Surviving in addition to her parents, paternal grandparents: Steven and Sharon Brown, Hanover. Maternal grandparents: Kenneth and Maria Harvey, Washington Boro. David J. Lahr

David J. Lahr, 32, of Landisville, passed away on Thursday, March 29, 2018. He was born in Yokosuka, Japan, son of David J. Lahr, Sr., and Brenda L. Kemmick Risner and step-son of Rick Risner. David enjoyed fishing, being with family and friends and especially his best friend, Bo.
Surviving in addition to his parents and step-father, one daughter: Madison M. Lahr. Grandparents: Carroll Lahr, Daniel and JoAnn Kemmick, Franklin Risner (Elva Lackey). Brother: Daniel L. (Amanda A.) Lahr. Half-brother: Aiden Lahr. Step-sisters: Shannon (Keith) Gill, and Kendra (Joseph) Kauffman. Aunts: Cindy Black (Al Dinkel), and Donna (Merle) Martin, Tina Loucks. Numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandfather: Clarence Lahr.

Nancy R. Graybill

Nancy R. Graybill, 88, of West Hempfield Township, passed away on Thursday, March 22, 2018 at home with family. She was the wife of the late Richard L. Graybill, who passed away in 2008. She was born in West Hempfield Twp., daughter of the late B. Frank and Ruth Ehrhart Rohrer. Nancy worked as a Bank Teller at Fulton Bank, Mountville before her retirement in 1998. She was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church, and was a graduate of Penn Manor High School. She and her husband raised sheep for many years, and she enjoyed gardening, sewing, traveling, camping, and family gatherings. 

She is survived by her children: Jacqueline G. (Ken) Cooper; Barry R. (Judy) Graybill; Diane G. (Barry) Armstrong; and Karen R. Boben. Ten grandchildren: Holly, Joseph, Rebecca, Callie, Sheri, Alison, Amy, Jodie, Kevin, and Morgan. Eleven great-grandchildren: Kylah, Kaden, Peyton, Alannah, Haley, Zander, Ellie, Silas, Colson, Rowan, and Jackson. Three step-great-grandchildren: Tristan, Joey, and Angie. Many nieces and nephews. Two sisters: Joanne E. Noblit and Julia R. (Jay) Greider. She was preceded in death by one sister: Betty Jane Rohrer Good Swarr. Two brothers: Eugene E. and Gerald F. Rohrer.

Wallace W. "Wally" Poague

Wallace W. “Wally” Poague, 58, of Lititz, passed on to eternal life on March 12, 2018 at Hospice and Community Care, Mount Joy. He was the loving and devoted husband of Patricia Buchmoyer Poague, for nearly 39 years. Wally was born in Washington, DC, son of the late William Wallace Poague, Sr., and Doris Campbell Poague, Manassas, VA. He spent most of his childhood in Catharpin, VA.

A “Jack-of-All-Trades”, Wally was a Certified Tool & Die Maker for many years, while owning and operating a small Garden Center and Lawn & Landscaping business. Always wanting to stay busy, Wally restored the family’s rusty 1948 Farmall Super C tractor to mint condition in just 1 month, after sitting disassembled for 5 years.

He took great pride in his 3 sons, instilling in them a great work ethic. He loved his 3 daughters-in-law, as if they were his own daughters. His 3 granddaughters were the light of his life, sharing a birthday with the oldest, Aubrey. Wally and Patti were known to share their love of the outdoors through landscaping, motorcycling, and camping. Most recently, Wally enjoyed and took pride in creating beautiful pieces of furniture made out of old barn wood.

In addition to his wife and mother, Wally will be truly missed by his 3 sons: Jason, husband of LeAnn Axe Poague, Lititz; Jeremiah, husband of Sarah Buck Poague, Columbia; and Nicolas, husband of Kelly Weiner Poague, Lancaster. Three granddaughters: Aubrey Poague, Lititz, Madison and Evelyn Poague, Columbia. He leaves behind his 5 brothers. Billy; Bobby (Elaine); Jimmy (Susan); John (Jean); and David (Karen). Two sisters: Donna Cole; and Linda (Peov) Nhek. Mother-in-law: Helen Duke Buchmoyer and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by: infant son, Joshua; and father-in-law: Marvin Buchmoyer.

Helene Brooks Evans

Helene Brooks Evans, 60, of Lancaster, passed away on Wednesday, March 14, 2018 at home. She was the wife of Jere C. Huss to whom she was married in April, 2004. She was born in Lancaster, daughter of the late Richard E. and Gladys A. Brooks Evans. Helene was a housewife and stay-at-home Nanny.

Surviving in addition to her husband, two daughters: Amy (James) Henry, Columbia; Rachel (Hector) Huss, Lancaster. Four step-children: Jere Huss, Jr., Phillipsburg; Robert Huss, Lancaster; Althea (George) Findley, Lancaster; and Dianne (Mike) Bear, Mount Joy. One brother: Patrick M. Evans, Leola. Ten Grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one sister: Nadine Havrilla.

Dolores G. Zink

Dolores G. Zink, age 84 of Mount Joy, died Tuesday, March 13, 2018 surrounded by her beloved son, Craig A. Zink, and several other family members. She passed peacefully into the loving arms of her Lord and Savior. She was the wife of the late James R. Zink, with whom she celebrated 48 years of marriage at the time of his death in 2008. Dolores was born in Bainbridge, daughter of the late Clark O. and Margie A. Stultz Arnold. She was a beautician who owned and operated her own shop in Marietta for years before the birth of her son, Craig. At that time she chose to give up her career and be a stay-at-home mother to raise her son. Craig was the love of her and Jim’s life, which was obvious to all around them. It was without a doubt her biggest and most important accomplishment of her life. They were very proud of the young man that he had become.

Dolores attended Susquehanna Grace Community Church, Wrightsville. She was a devoted wife and mother, and messenger of the Lord’s word, as she had a true gift to witness. She loved her flowers, especially daffodils. She also enjoyed going out to eat and spending time with her family and friends, especially during the holidays.

Surviving in addition to her son, Craig A. Zink (Diane) is one sister: Belle E. Houck, Columbia. One brother: John F. (Shirley) Arnold, Sr., New Port Richey, FL. Sister-in law: Joyce Arnold, Marietta. She was preceded in death by one brother: Clark S. Arnold and one brother-in-law: Wilbur Houck.

Richard Lee Laymon

Richard Lee Laymon, 52, of Edmeston, NY, passed away peacefully, at the home of his son, Ryan in Mountville, PA. He was the son of Darwin Laymon, Unadilla Forks, NY and the late Gloria Coy Goslin. Richard was a very skilled, self-employed carpenter who could build a house from start to finish. He was the most hard working and determined person, and he took pride in his work. Richard was a loving father, brother, son and friend. He loved to help others, was known by many, and was loved by anyone that had the pleasure of meeting him. 

Richard was an avid hunter who had a true passion for the sport. He would have lived in the woods if he could. Over the years he has bagged bear, turkey, deer and this fall, his first elk. He owned his own archery shop connected to his house, for family and friends, and also taught bow hunter safety courses.

Surviving in addition to his father, two sons: Ryan Lee Laymon, companion of Sheila Barrett, Mountville; Matthew Kory (Sienna) Laymon, Edmeston, NY. Three brothers: Terry (Luanna) Steele, Ithaca, NY; Steve (Karen) Laymon, North Carolina; Patrick Moorse, Ithaca, NY.  Five sisters: Cristine Weeks, West Virginia; Sue (Shawn) Getchell, New Berlin, NY; Pam Misch, West Virginia; Jessie Watson, Oneida, NY; and Bobbi Jo Moorse, Whitesboro, NY. One granddaughter: Scarlett Irene Laymon. One sister-in-law: Mindy Laymon, West Edmeston, NY. He was preceded in death by one brother: Darwin Laymon, Jr.

Beverly (Bev) Jean Dippery Gulliver

Beverly (Bev) Jean Dippery Gulliver, 70, of Lancaster, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, March 8, 2018. She passed away at home surrounded by her loving family and friends. Beverly was born in Lewistown, PA, the oldest daughter of Marguerite and the late V. Eugene Dippery.  Beverly’s passions consisted of playing bingo, spoiling her grandchildren, shopping and collecting Santa’s.  She was a woman of phenomenal strength.  She had an amazing ability to captivate a room with her personality, quick wit, and genuine joy of being surrounded by the ones she loved. Beverly was a devout member of the Silver Spring Baptist Church.  She attended Hempfield High School (Landisville), and worked tirelessly her entire life in various careers and was retired from MXL Industries in Lancaster. 

Beverly leaves behind a husband of 21 years, David G. Gulliver. She was the amazing mother of Donna Feith, Daniel Kauffman, Angela Wentz, wife of Barry Wentz, and Amy Jo Sumpman fiancée of Cari Schmeltzle. Adored grandmother of Dustin Deshong (wife Lindsay), Michael Wentz (wife Jenni), Kate Wentz (companion: Jesse Yurista) Emmi Wentz (fiancée: Drew Snyder), Andrew Sumpman Braas, and Lucylynn Kauffman. Great- granddaughter Lily Deshong. Loving sister to: Bonnie Mummert (husband Frank), Maryjane Walker, Deb Laukhuff (husband Jack), and Becky Wolf (husband Rick). Faithful best friends: Mary Sumpman and Karen Reisinger.

Arlene K. Horner

Arlene K. Horner, 90, of Lancaster, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 8, 2018 at home. She was the wife of Richard W. Horner, Jr., and had been married for 63 years at the time of his death in 2012.

Born in Lancaster, she was the daughter of the late Samuel H. and Reba Mowrer Kauffman and is survived by a sister and brother: Grace K. Sload and Richard L. Kauffman. Her older brother, Robert M. Kauffman, preceded her in death. After graduating from Penn Manor High School in 1945, she was employed by S.H. Kauffman and Watt and Shand. Later, she worked at Central Manor Elementary School and Lancaster Central Market.

Arlene attended and was a member of Central Manor Church of God for over 70 years where she played the piano and taught Sunday School. For the past 15 years she was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. A homemaker for most of her married life, she enjoyed making cross-stitch samplers, traveling, bird-watching and planting flowers. She enjoyed cooking and creating a warm and inviting home where she hosted many dinner parties. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family. Her great-granddaughter, and namesake, Caroline Arlene Platt, brought her much joy during the past two years.

She is survived by a son, Richard W. Horner, III, husband of Jolene Horner, Conestoga and a daughter, Karen A., wife of G. Daniel Baughman, Jr., Lancaster. In addition to Caroline, she leaves behind two granddaughters, Megan, wife of Nathan Henderson and Erin, wife of Jamie Platt. She is also survived by a step-granddaughter and two step-great-grandchildren. Arlene will be dearly missed by her children and grandchildren.

John E. Miller

John E. Miller, 94, of Mountville, passed away on Thursday, February 15, 2018. He was born in Lancaster, son of the late John N. and Anna Bowers Miller. He was a Fire Fighter for the City of Lancaster and a Delivery Truck Driver for Lancaster Electric. John was of the Christian Faith; a Veteran of the US Navy, serving during WWII; a lifetime member of the American Legion Post #34; a lifetime member of Reese-Hall VFW Post #8757; and also enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He is survived by one daughter: Judith Anne Berry, Las Vegas, NV. One son: James N. Miller, Hollywood, FL. Six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. He was preceded in death by one son: John E. Miller, II.

Pastor Jo Ann Enders

Pastor Jo Ann Enders, 75, of Mountville, passed away on Friday, February 16, 2018. She was the wife of Harold F. Enders with whom she celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary on February 11, 2018. She was born in Salunga, daughter of the late Charles E. and Mary I. Brenner Aument. Pastor Jo Ann served in many churches, most recently at Washington Boro United Methodist Church. She walked with Jesus Christ, who was the source of her love and inspiration.  She shared that great love with her family and the community. She served at and was a member of Mountville Church of the Brethren.  She started the 4-H Club in Mountville.  Through these endeavors she touched many youth, who knew her and her husband as “Mr. and Mrs. E”. Pastor Jo Ann was a member of the Conestoga Herb Guild, and she enjoyed gardening, sewing, rug hooking, knitting, cross stitching, camping, her German Shepherd dogs, and going to the cabin. 
 
Surviving in addition to her husband, her children: Deborah J. (John N.) Albright; Harold F. (Debra J.) Enders, Jr.; and Belinda G. (Christopher M.) Collins, MD, PhD. Four grandchildren: Ryan C. (Ashley); Cory N. (Brittany); Dane A.; and Christina M.  (Alex). Seven great-grandchildren. One brother: Donald (Patricia) Aument.

Lorraine Regina (Pierantozzi) Wollaston

Lorraine Regina (Pierantozzi) Wollaston, 87, of Lancaster, passed away on Thursday, February 15, 2018 at her residence. She was the wife of the late James E. Wollaston, Sr. Lorraine was born in New Castle, DE, daughter of the late Piereno and Rose Marcozzi Pierantozzi. She worked as an Administrative Assistant for Chrysler Corporation, Newark, DE; was a member of St. John Neumann Catholic Church; and enjoyed going to the beach at Wildwood, NJ, shopping, and spending time with her family. Lorraine was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

She is survived by her children: Karen A. Wilson; Donna L. Wollaston Reese; James E. (Diane) Wollaston, Jr.; and Janice Wollaston (Companion of Kathy Bobeck). Five grandchildren. Seven great-grandchildren. Sister: Theresa Widdekind. She was preceded in death by sisters: Lena Pierantozzi, and Ann Everett.

Romaine G. McKinley

Romaine G. McKinley, 88, of Lancaster, passed away on Tuesday, February 13, 2018. She was the wife of Harry J. McKinley with whom she would have celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary on August 31, 2018. She was born in Lancaster, daughter of the late Leroy O. and Carrie F. Peffer Frey. She was a nursing assistant at Lancaster General Hospital for 15 years before her retirement. She attended Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ, Mountville where she taught Sunday School.

Surviving in addition to her husband, one son: Dennis (Jill) Millhouse, Ephrata. Two daughters: Darlene M. Jenkins, Holtwood; and Dawn V. Cover, Lancaster. Four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers: Harold and Richard Frey, and one sister: Ruth Ressler.

George H. Francis, PhD

George H. Francis, PhD, 93, Professor Emeritus at Millersville University, passed away on Saturday, February 3, 2018 at his Manor Township home. He was the husband of Edna Francis for 57 years until her death in 2001 and Nancy L. Myers Francis, with whom he celebrated 15 years of marriage. He was born in Ishpeming, MI, son of the late Arthur and Helga Lindhom Francis. George served in the US Army and Air Corps in WWII and saw service in Germany, Belgium, Austria and France. He spent 14 months in the European Theater Operations as a radio operator and tech. George taught at the secondary level in Port Huron, MI, and later taught in Chicago Heights, IL and at Northern Michigan University at Marquette. He earned his doctorate at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale in 1966. He joined Millersville University in 1963 as an Associate Professor of Industrial Arts, where he assisted in founding the first closed circuit television station at Millersville. While at the college, he also worked with three students to build a teaching tool for a physically disabled student. George was an avid Amateur Radio enthusiast and enjoyed attending and rummaging through “good junk” at area Hamfests.

Although he was a man of many accomplishments, his main goal was to provide his family with the best possible life. He was always ready to provide a helping hand to anyone who needed it. His humor was infectious, and he loved a practical joke, even when it was played on him.

Surviving in addition to his wife are his children: Karen Keiser, Manor Twp.; and Bruce, married to Carol, Austin, TX. Three grandchildren: Ruth Sadd (wife of Ron); Jodi Bencak (wife of Raymond); and Sara Bennett (wife of Wesley). Eight great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one grandson: Christopher Gardner and one great-great-grandson: Dawson Waite.

At George’s request, there will be no viewing or traditional service. The family will host an informal gathering honoring George at the Workman Funeral Homes, Inc., 114 West Main Street, Mountville on Saturday, February 17, 2018 from 3:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. Beatrice Mae O'Connell

Beatrice Mae O’Connell, 88 of Mountville, passed away on Friday, February 2, 2018 at home. She was born in Lancaster, daughter of the late Jacob and Maude Spangler Garman. She was of the Lutheran faith and she loved her family, friends, and her family at Faith Friendship Ministries.

She is survived by two sons: Steven J. (Joan) O’Connell, Urbana, IL; and Randy P. O’Connell, Peach Bottom. Six grandchildren. Eleven great-grandchildren. One brother: Gilbert Garman, Florida. She was preceded in death by six brothers and sisters.

Haydn Samuel Compres

Haydn Samuel Compres, 23, of Marietta, lost his battle with addiction and mental illness on Saturday, January 27, 2018. He was born in Columbia, son of Jonny Compres and Jessica Stoutzenberger. Haydn never wanted to be defined by his struggles. He was a young, bright, gifted man who could light up a room with his smile. He was always quick to make the people that he loved happy. He was a loyal son, brother, grandson, and great-grandson. He loved sharing his passion for fishing with his younger brother, helping his grandparents with landscaping and going to the movies with his sister. He had a thirst for life and experiencing all it had to offer.

Surviving in addition to his parents, siblings: Mariah, Evealice, and Jahzion. Maternal Grandparents: Richard and Christine Stoutzenberger. Paternal grandparents: Lewis and Rosa Jusino. Maternal great-grandmother: Cathryn Henny. And other family members. He was preceded in death by Paternal great-grandparents: Roman Reyes and Josephine Montanez. One little brother: Jahdiel Brannon.

Roberta W. Peters

Heaven gained another angel on Monday, January 22, 2018, Roberta W. “Bobbie” Peters, who passed away unexpectedly in her 79th year at her residence in Mountville. Bobbie worked as a server most of her life in various restaurants: J.C Penney’s, Woods Edge, Manor Plaza, Willow Valley and most recently, Dutch Apple. She was an amazing woman who loved life and spent each day enjoying it to the fullest. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family and many friends. She greatly enriched her family’s lives by attending at holidays, family get-togethers, milestone achievements, every athletic event, (rain, sleet, or snow), and travels to New York City, the Shore, Cape Cod, Aruba, and Disney World. Bobbie was quite the social butterfly and loved spending her days with her many friends playing cards, eating meals, and chatting. She was an avid Eagles and Phillies fan, and watched every game that she could. She warmly shared her smile with both friends, and strangers and generously had a way of helping people by putting other’s needs before her own. She was a longtime member of Hempfield United Methodist Church.

Bobbie is survived by her daughter: Sherie J. Fisher, Mountville. Sons: Larry Fisher, Landisville; Kent W. (companion: Jane Flemming) Peters, East Petersburg; and Jeffrey S. (Lisa) Peters, Mountville. Grandchildren: Kristin Coleman; Doug Fisher; Colin, Cole, Asher, and Quinn Peters. One brother: David Leas, Lancaster. She was preceded in death by her mother: Violet Neudorff and her son: Lance E. Fisher, Clinton, MD.

Roberta leaves a legacy of many memories, love, kindness, and faith that will continue to live through the many lives she touched.

The Celebration of Life Service will be held at Hempfield United Methodist Church, 3050 Marietta Avenue, Lancaster on Wednesday, January 31, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. Mark A. Shope, Jr.

Mark A. Shope, Jr., 35, of York, passed away on Saturday, January 20, 2018. He was the husband of Mindy S. Warren Shope. He was born in Lancaster, son of Mark A. Shope, Sr., Marietta and Jody A. Nell Hartman, Wrightsville. He enjoyed fishing, cooking, spending time with his family and was and avid New York Yankees fan.

Surviving in addition to his wife and parents, his children: Alicia M. Shope; Shelby L. Shope; and his unborn child, Ava. One sister: Leanne H. Nell.  Maternal grandmother: Shirley A. Fasig. Numerous aunts, uncles and other family members.

Ronald L. Miller

Ronald L. Miller, 78, of Mountville, passed away on Saturday, January 20, 2018 at home, surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Phyllis Beck Miller to whom he was married for 54 years. He was born in Lancaster, son of the late Lewis D. Miller and Henrietta Ackerman Ressler. Ron was a school teacher at Lancaster County Career and Technology Center, Mount Joy Campus for 32 years before retiring in 2002. Ron and his wife owned Plain and Fancy Salon in Lancaster and Rohrerstown for 20 years. He was a graduate of Hempfield High School, Class of 1958 and Penn State University. He was a member of St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, where he served on Parish Council and was a Eucharistic Minister and is a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Ron was a member of Elizabeth Ann Seton Council and was a Third Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus. He was a veteran of the US Army, serving during the Vietnam Conflict and a member of the American Legion Post #372, Columbia. 

Surviving in addition to his wife, one son:  Brian S. (Lorna L.) Miller, San Diego, CA. Two grandsons: John P. and Joseph P. Miller, San Diego, CA. One sister: Carolyn A. Miller, Reading. Two sisters-in-law: Nancy Miller, Raynham, MA; and Amy Miller, Wellsboro. He was preceded in death by two brothers: Dr. Glenn Miller and Dale Miller.

Nancy E. Mosteller

Nancy E. Mosteller, 79, of Columbia, passed away on Saturday, January 20, 2018 at Susquehanna Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was the wife of Leroy Mosteller with whom he would have celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary on April 10, 2018. She was born in Columbia, daughter of the late William, Sr. and Mary Haugh Hogendobler. She was a graduate of Columbia High School, Class of 1956 and was a member of Columbia United Methodist Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband, two sons: David (Kym) Mosteller, and Paul (Gretchen) Mosteller, all of Columbia. Step-sons: Darryl Mosteller and Leroy A. “Tony” Mosteller, Columbia. Two grandchildren: Jared and Lacie Mosteller. Several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. One brother: William (Terry) Hogendobler, Jr., Lancaster. One sister: Mary Jane Bell, Columbia.
