Dorothy S. Banner, 93, of Lancaster, passed away at home, on Friday, July 17, 2026. She had been in failing health for several years. Dorothy was born in Columbia, daughter of the late Edgar and Fannie K. Aument Leithiser. She was a graduate of Columbia High School, Class of 1950. Dorothy was married to Glenn S. Banner, also of Columbia, for over 60 years until his death in 2022.
Dorothy was a faithful member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Lancaster, where she served on the Altar Guild and as the church librarian. She took great joy in creating displays that drew people into the library. She also developed a keen interest in gingerbread houses and designed and built a new gingerbread creation each Christmas.
An avid reader, Dorothy built an extensive collection of cookbooks, gardening books, and health and wellness books.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews, as well as many friends. She was predeceased by her parents; her husband; and her three sisters, Janet, Betty, and Geraldine.
Dorothy’s friends and family would like to thank the compassionate, faithful, and capable caregivers from Home Instead who cared for her in her home for three years, and Hospice and Community Care for providing medical care during her last year of life.
A Memorial Service in celebration of Dorothy’s life will take place on Monday, August 3, 2026 at 11:00 A.M. at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 800 Fifth Street, Lancaster. Parking for the service is available in the parking lot at the rear of Wheatland Middle School, 919 Hamilton Park Drive, Lancaster. The church will provide shuttle service from the parking lot to the church. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Dorothy’s memory may be made to Redeemer Lutheran Church or Lancaster Township Fire Company. Arrangements by the Workman Funeral Homes, Inc., Mountville/Columbia.
