Ruth H. Bushong

Ruth H. Bushong died peacefully at the age of 106 on Thursday, July 25, 2019. A resident of Brethren Village, she lived on a dairy farm in West Hempfield Twp., Lancaster County from 1935 to 2000. She was a member of the Mountville Church of the Brethren, serving in the office of deacon with her late husband, Robert H. Bushong, who died in 1983. She was in Farm Women Society #4, enjoyed quilting, gardening, traveling and serving others. Ruth was the daughter of the late Rev. Peter S. and Sadie Burkholder Heisey of Clay Twp., Lancaster County. 

She is survived by by five children: E. Faye Rohrer (wife of the late Jay H. Rohrer) of Lititz, PA, Glenn R. (Ruth E.) Bushong, Columbia, PA, Reba J. (Dean) Beery, North Manchester, IN, S. Marie (Melvin) Breneman, Strasburg, PA, and Dale E. (Frances) Bushong, Annville, PA. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers: Ralph B., Samuel B., and Enos B. Heisey. She was also preceded in death by her great-granddaughter, Hope E. Breneman. 

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service at Mountville Church of the Brethren, 60 Clay St, Mountville, PA 17554 on Monday, July 29, 2019 at 11:00 A.M. with visitation preceding the service at 10:00 A.M.  Interment will be private. Daniel Z. Cornelius

Daniel Z. Cornelius, Jr., 40, of Columbia, passed away on Saturday, July 13, 2019 at home. He was born in Columbia, son of the late Daniel Z. Cornelius, Sr. and Jody L. Graham Cornelius, Columbia. He was an assembler at Syncreon, York. He enjoyed NASCAR with Mark Martin being his favorite driver; the Steelers; assembling model cars; wrestling; and spending time with his children.

Surviving in addition to his mother, twin daughters: Brooke N. Murphy and Brittney L. Murphy. One sister: Kayla L. Bletz, Columbia. Numerous Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins.

Mary E. Conger

Mary E. Conger, 71, of Elizabethtown, passed away on Thursday, July 18, 2019. She was the wife of William A. Conger whom she married on December 11, 1993. She was born in Lancaster, daughter of the late Henry S. May and the late Betty Jane Brenner. She enjoyed playing bingo, her grandchildren and her dogs.

Surviving in addition to her husband, two daughters: Betty M. (Kenneth, Sr.) Keller-Lightcap and Linda L. (Bruce E., Jr.) Hershey. One step-son: William E. Conger. Eight grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. One brother: Henry Brenner and one sister: Rose Boughter. She was preceded in death by one son-in-law: David L. Keller, Sr. and two brothers: Franklin and Arthur Brenner.

Teresa L. Van Zandt

Teresa L. Van Zandt, 55, of Lititz, passed away on Saturday, July 13, 2019 at her second home in the village of Central, PA. She was born in Lancaster, daughter of Julie McCamant Van Zandt and the late Gordon R. Van Zandt. She was self-employed, having a stand at Roots Market. She enjoyed the mountains, crafting, her family, and her two dogs.

She is survived by her life companion, Charles F. Ortlieb. Her children: Jason M. Krauskop; Tara L. Krauskop; and Amanda E.T. Krauskop. Eleven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. One brother: H.N. Scott (Terri A.) Van Zandt. One sister: Lucinda S. (Guy M.) DeBord.

Leroy S. "Bachy" Bachman

Leroy S. "Bachy" Bachman, 87, of Mountville, passed away on Monday, July 15, 2019. He was the husband of Margaret A. Hank Bachman, with whom he would have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on August 13, 2019. He was born in Columbia, son of the late Lester and Bessie Mae Groom Bachman. He was a Union Plasterer/Cement Finisher and also an instructor for Job Corps in Maryland. Bachy was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church; Columbia Lodge #286 F&AM; and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time with his family and friends.

Surviving in addition to his wife, one daughter: Diane L. (David A.) Schaeffer; and one son: James H. (Theresa) E. Bachman, all of Mountville. Four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son: Thomas L. Bachman and four brothers and sisters.

Emma V. Douglas

Emma V. Douglas, 88, of Columbia, passed away on Monday, July 8, 2019. She was the wife of the late Gene C. Douglas, Sr. She was born in Glade Springs, VA, daughter of the late Newton Lewis, Sr. and M. Elizabeth Norris Lewis Feltch. She was the owner, with her late husband, of Douglas Construction. She was of the Methodist faith, and enjoyed camping, traveling, painting, adult coloring, spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, friends, and was a loving wife and mother. 

Surviving are her children: Gene C. “Butch” Douglas, Jr.; Debra A. (Bela) Elek; and Sherry L. (Jennifer Eck) Douglas. Daughter-in-law: Janean L. Douglas. Six grandchildren: Angela Lease; Heidi Stewart; Greg Douglas, Jr.; John Harman, Jr.; Colby Baker; and Austin Douglas. Eight great-grandchildren. One sister: M. Jane (Leroy) Hallacher. She was preceded in death by one son: Gregory B. Douglas. Seven brothers: Newton, Jr., Frank, William, Ronald, Donald, Kenneth, and Dean Lewis.

Valli Lee Trice

Valli Lee Ashford Trice, 70, of Mountville, passed away on Saturday, July 6, 2019 at home, surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of the late Larry C. Trice, Sr., who passed away on November 19, 2016. She was born in Lancaster, daughter of the late John F. and Grayce V. Frankver Roth. She was a physical therapist for Beverly Healthcare and Manor Care Health Services. She enjoyed painting, gardening, and spending time with her family. 

She is survived by one son: Lonnie M. (Crystal L.) Ashford. One daughter: Michele L. Ashford. Three step-children: Kim Trice; Larry Trice, Jr.; and Michael Trice. Ten grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren. One sister: Joan Marshall. She was preceded in death by one brother: John David Roth, Sr.

Kenneth D. Peters

Kenneth D. Peters, 88, of Washington Boro, passed away on Friday, July 5, 2019 at home. He was the husband of Gayle L. Fisher Peters with whom they would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on November 2, 2019. He was born in Manor Township, son of the late Earl C. and May A. Brown Peters. He was a weighmaster for Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority (LCSWMA) at the Creswell Landfill for 23 years before his retirement. Ken was a graduate of Penn Manor High School and attended Elizabethtown College. He was a veteran of the US Air Force serving during the Korean Conflict and at the age of 87, he flew a T-6 airplane. He was a member of Washington Boro Church of God where he served as a deacon and also Columbia Church of God. Ken was president of the Ultralight Club, was an avid bird watcher, loved animals and kids. He was also a leader of 4H wood working. 

Surviving in addition to his wife, his children: Karen E. (Tillman F., Jr.) Rupp; Kenneth D. Peters, Jr.; and Jennifer M. (Miguel) Rivera. Eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Two sisters: Janet Yoder and Aletha Groff. He was preceded in death by five brothers: Earl, Donald, Richard, V. Allen, and Robert Peters

Carol L. Hoffmeier

Carol L. Hoffmeier, 74, of Mountville passed away on Saturday, June 29, 2019 at home. She was the wife of the late Arthur L. Hoffmeier, Sr. She was born in Lancaster, daughter of the late Paul R. and Elizabeth Dill Mayer. She worked at Fulton Bank as a teller at several branches until her retirement. She previously worked at Woolworth's Park City Center for 25 years. She was an avid bowler, having bowled since she was 17, and bowled in many leagues throughout the years. She was a member of Wayside Presbyterian Church; and loved NASCAR, especially Kyle Petty, her favorite driver.

She is survived by her two children: Candy L. (Robert) Loffredo; and Gary E. Williams, Arizona. Three grandchildren: Gary L. (Stephanie) Williams; Heather L. (Austin) Rice; and Amanda P. Loffredo. Three great-grandchildren: Jett, Mason, and Angel Williams. Two sisters: Shirley L. (Gerald R.) Keeports, Elizabethtown; and Deborah L. (Charles) High, Middletown.

Albert R. Manuel, Sr.

Albert R. Manuel, Sr., 57, of Red Lion, passed away on Wednesday, June 26, 2019. He was the husband of Betty J. Snyder Manuel to whom he was married for 37 years. He was born in Columbia, son of Gordon L., Sr. and Joyce L. Becker Manuel. He worked as a laborer in construction and enjoyed collecting coins, doing crossword puzzles, loved puppies and was a history buff who enjoyed watching the History Channel.

Surviving in addition to his wife, his children: Albert R. (Ashley) Manuel, Jr.; Charles H. Manuel; and Joyce A. Manuel, all of Red Lion. Two grandchildren: Drew and Amelia. Siblings: Gordon Manuel, Jr.; Michael Manuel; Charles (Joann) Manuel, all of Columbia; Steve (Dottie) Manuel, Enola; Daniel (Donna) Manuel; Columbia; Terry (Jim) Summers, Lancaster; and Betty (Beatle) Bailey, Columbia. Wilda M. "Dolly" Varner

Wilda M. "Dolly" Varner, 88, of Concordia Road, West Hempfield Twp, passed away on Sunday, June 23, 2019 at Hospice and Community Care, Mount Joy, less than a mile from where she was born in Salunga. She was the wife of John F. Varner to whom she was married for 41 years. Dolly was a unique lady who believed in hard work and doing a job right. She worked at J L Clark, Mfg Company for 49 years before her retirement in 1995. She prided herself in doing purity work and meeting productive goals. Some could remember Dolly from the 70's at the Manor Ridge Inn. Now she is in a better place enjoying a frozen Margarita with "salt" and waiting for her meal to be reheated. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Columbia Lodge #1074 BPOE where she was a past secretary.

Surviving in addition to her husband, one sister: Mary wife of Raymond Rynier, Gordonville. Nephew: Randy husband of Connie Rynier, Rawlinsville. Nieces: Betty Ann Baurs, Lancaster; and Patti wife of Jack Sloop, Tega Cay, SC. One stepson: John husband of Susan Varner, York. Dolly was preceded in death by two sisters: Shirley Bradley and Martha Brown.

George Roberts

George Roberts, 80, of Mount Joy, passed away on Sunday, June 23, 2019 at St. Anne's Retirement Community. He was the husband of Evelyn M. Nielsen Roberts with whom he celebrated their 15th wedding anniversary on October 1, 2018. He was born in Brooklyn, NY, son of the late Alfred and Esther Spencer Roberts. George was a repair person for Xerox Corp for 30 years before his retirement. He was a member of Christ the King Community Church; a Veteran of the US Army; enjoyed motorcycles, having ridden to California; Ham Radios; and trains.

Surviving in addition to his wife, his children: Elizabeth (Joseph) Roberts-Morse; George A. (Annette) Roberts; Timothy A. (Heidi J.) Roberts. Charles S. Brommer, Jr.

Charles S. "Chub" Brommer, Jr., 85, of Columbia, passed away at home on Wednesday, June 19, 2019, surrounded by his loving family after a 2 year, courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Columbia, son of the late Charles S. Brommer, Sr. and Amy I. (Dambach) Brommer. He was the loving husband of Fannie E. (Miller) Brommer for 62 years. Charles graduated from Columbia High School, Class of 1953 and was a Veteran of the US Army. He worked for Sperry New Holland before he retired in 1991. Charles was also an avid modified tractor puller for over 40 years, and loved spending hours tinkering around in his machine shop.

Surviving in addition to his wife, his children: Charles A. Brommer, Sr.; Arthur E. (Ann) Brommer; James D. Brommer, Sr.; and Elsie M. Brommer. Ten grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. One brother: Jon R. Brommer, and many 'adopted' family members. Charles was preceded in death by his brother: Henry D. Brommer; three nephews; and one niece.

George J. Bradshaw, Sr., 77, of Mountville, passed away on Monday, June 17, 2019 at Hospice and Community Care, Mount Joy. He was the husband of Karen E. Rudisill Bradshaw with whom he celebrated their 31st wedding anniversary on April 9, 2019. He was born in Wilkes-Barre, son of the late Elmer L. and Louise Domanski Bradshaw. He was a general manager for JS Raub, Wilkes-Barre. George was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Columbia; the Columbia Fraternal and Beneficial Association (Owls); Columbia-Middletown BPOE #1074; Chickies Rock Lodge #307 of the Moose; Forester's of America; Viking Club, York; the American Legion Post #466, Marietta; and he enjoyed playing golf.

Franklin H. McKonly

Franklin H. McKonly, Jr., 55, of Lancaster, passed away on Tuesday, May 28, 2019. He was born in Lancaster, son of Jacqulyn D. Fisher McKonly and the late Franklin H. McKonly, Sr. He was a master electrician, having worked for Lapp Electric. He enjoyed hunting, NASCAR, and any driver who drove a Ford, and the Dallas Cowboys.

Surviving in addition to his mother, his children: Hannah J. McKonly and Franklin H. McKonly, III. Three nieces. One nephew. Three great-nieces and three great-nephews. Two sisters: Faith A. Gui, and Hope A. McKonly.

Roy V. Bender

Roy V. Bender, 91, of Washington Boro, passed away on Monday, May 27, 2019 at St. Anne’s Retirement Community. He was born in Lancaster County, son of the late Jacob and Ada White Bender. Roy was the husband of the late Doris Bender for 62 years before her homegoing in 2013. He was a graduate of Penn Manor High School and served in the US Marine Corps, (1952-54). He was a carpenter all of his life working for several local contractors. He was always very generous with his time and expertise in helping others with remodeling and other woodworking projects. He was an active member of the Washington Boro Church of God, teaching Sunday School and serving in various leadership positions. Roy loved his extended family and will be greatly missed by them. The Lord blessed him with a long productive life and he is now with his Lord in a better place. Praise His name!

He is survived by his children: David R. (Rosanne) Bender and Kathleen M. (Theodore Bair). Grandchildren: Kerie E. Bair, Jada M. Bair, Janae A. Bair, D. Craig (Ashley) Bender, Kevin R. (Kelly) Bender, and Jason R. (Torrie) Bender. Step-grandchildren: Kyle (Erin) Bair, and Jarred Bair. In addition he was blessed with six-great-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son: Craig A. Bender; one granddaughter: Amie N. James; and one step-grandson: Trevor Bair.

William E. Riggle

William E. Riggle, 83, of Elizabethtown, passed away on Tuesday, May 14, 2019 at Masonic Village. He was the husband of the late June G. Riggle, who passed away on July 7, 2013. He was born in Lima, OH, son of the late Fred E. and Dorothy E. Kohli Riggle. He was a Supervisor for RCA Corp., and owned several local restaurants: Foxshire, Wood's Edge, and the Pantry Deli. He was a member of Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd and the Masonic Lodge #43 F&AM, Lancaster. He was a Veteran of the US Navy, serving during the Korean Conflict and a member of the Millersville-Manor VFW Post #7294.

He is survived by one son: William E. (Theresa) Riggle, Jr., Rising Sun, MD. One daughter: Tambrey Lee (the late Michael) Diehm, Lancaster and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one sister: Patsy Lee Allen.

Walter J. "Jim" Shaub

Walter J. "Jim" Shaub, Jr., 78, of Columbia, entered his Heavenly Home on Tuesday, May 21, 2019 following a three month illness and a 35 year journey with Diabetes at Hospice and Community Care, Mount Joy. Jim is survived by his best friend and wife, Linda L. Rider Shaub to whom he was married for 60 years. He was born in Columbia, son of the late Walter J., Sr. and Mary E. Horner Shaub. He was a graduate of Columbia High School, Class of 1958 and retired from Anvil International after 40 years of service.

Surviving in addition to his wife, three children: Keith A. Shaub, Mark C. (Charlotte A.) Shaub, all of Columbia, and Lynne D. Shaub, at home. Two grandchildren: Tiffanie L. and Mark C., Jr. One great-grandson: Alaric James.

Edward J. Kasper

Edward J. Kasper, 79, of East Petersburg, passed away on Wednesday, May 15, 2019. He was born in Luzerne County, son of the late Peter Kasper and Josephine H. Swipps Wagner. He was the owner of Epic Dental Lab, Annapolis, MD before his retirement. Ed was a Veteran of the US Air Force; a former member of Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church, Middletown; and a member of Knights of Columbus Council #3501. He enjoyed writing poetry, the NY Times Sunday crossword puzzles, in pen, and spending time with his family.

He is survived by two daughters: Jill M. (Charles R., Jr.) Kurtz, Mountville; and Krystal K. Little, Beaufort, SC. Five grandchildren: Charles R. Kurtz, III; Benjamin, Nathaniel, Brandon, and Gabriel. Two great-grandchildren: Aiden and Ruby. He was preceded in death by one sister: Wendy Lyons.

The Memorial Service will be held at the Workman Funeral Homes, Inc., 114 West Main Street, Mountville on SATURDAY, JUNE 8, 2019 at 11:00 A.M.
