Ronald L. Miller

Ronald L. Miller, 67 of Mountville, passed away on Wednesday, May 27, 2020. He was born in Lancaster, son of the late Raymond H. and Erma W. Weidman Miller. He was a laborer working for Ken Gingrich Farms for 36 years. Ron was a member of Chestnut Hill Mennonite Church and attended Manor Church where he was a part of the Journey's Program.

Surviving are his four siblings.

Miriam Ebersole Charles

Miriam Ebersole Charles, 93, of Manor Township, entered Glory on Saturday, May 23, 2020 at her home, following a brief illness. She was born in Lancaster, daughter of the late Christian S. and Susan (Shenk) Ebersole. She was married for 68 years to the late David Arthur Charles who passed away in 2015. Miriam loved life with all her heart, loved music, reading, sewing, walking in the woods, children, her family and loved meeting new people. She prayed everyday for her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and a list of others in her life who she felt needed an extra touch of God's grace. Miriam was a born organizer and planner, whether at church, school or at home with her family. She was part of the second graduating class from Lancaster Mennonite School in 1944 and remained a strong advocate for Mennonite education. She taught elementary students at Manor Mennonite School and was a music teacher at Kraybill Mennonite School and New Danville Mennonite School. Miriam and her husband managed a farm in Manor Township. She served in many roles at Habecker Mennonite Church. She taught Sunday School, served as president of the Manor Sewing Circle, volunteered at the Columbia ReUzit Store and with Hospice. For twenty years she retouched photographs for Charles Studio. She lived her entire life in Lancaster County, but she opened her home to people from all over the world, embracing everyone who stopped at her doorstep. Over the years, she and Arthur welcomed refugees from Eastern Europe, Vietnam, and Burma, helping them to start new lives in this country.

Surviving are her children: David (Martha) Charles, Lancaster; Anita Ranck (David Kindy), Winston-Salem, NC; Jonathan (Rhoda) Charles, Lancaster; Sharyn (Lowell) Tieszen, Harrisonburg, VA; and Dan (Brigid McCarthy) Charles, Washington, DC. Thirteen grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren. Brother: David (Mary Ann) Ebersole. Sisters-in-law: Grace Ebersole and Martha Charles Sangree. She was preceded in death by brother: Ernest Ebersole and two sisters: Nyla Witmer and Ethel Metzler and a son-in-law: Marlyn Ranck.

A Graveside Service will be held at the convenience of the family. An online memorial service will take place in the coming weeks. Please contact family members for details. Wyatt G. "Pap" Sullivan

Wyatt G. "Pap" Sullivan, 97, of the Mennonite Home, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 19, 2020 due to complications from COVID-19. He was the husband of the late Mary Jane VonStetten Sullivan for 60 years before her passing in 2004. He was born in White Sulfur Springs, WV, son of the late Mable Gregory. Wyatt retired from Kerr Glass after 40 years of service. He was a member of Hempfield United Methodist Church and a veteran of the US Navy, serving during WWII. Wyatt was a wonderful grandfather who never missed a chance to shower his grandchildren with love. His life centered around his family and all the special times spent together, especially the great summer vacations. At the age of 94, he surprised us all by showing off his underwater swimming abilities. He was an avid golfer from a very young age and continued to play well into his 90's.

Wyatt is survived by his daughter: Judy wife of John Kline. Grandson: Randy Kline husband of Rachelle. Granddaughter: Lori wife of Jeff Meyers. Four great-grandchildren: Aaron and Matthew Kline; and Megan and Josh Meyers. He was preceded in death by his brothers: Dud and Tom.

The family will be eternally grateful for all of the loving kindness shown to Wyatt by the staff of Goods and Eshelman Run.

A Private Graveside Service with full military honors will be held at Ironville Cemetery with Pastor John Longmire, officiating. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later date. Donald L. “Ducky” Shortlidge

Donald L. "Ducky" Shortlidge, 90 of Mountville, passed away on Friday, May 15, 2020 at home. He was the husband of the late Fay E. Houck Shortlidge for forty years before she passed away. He was born in Eden, son of the late Clefton F. and Louise Miller Shortlidge. Ducky was a design engineer, having worked for Schick for 21 years, where he held several patents and Hamilton Technologies before his retirement. He was a member of Concordia Evangelical Lutheran Church and was a veteran of the US Navy Reserves and the US Air Force, serving during the Korean Conflict. He was a boy scout leader; was a life member of the Susquehanna Yacht Club and loved sailing. He had his pilot's license and flew airplanes for a short time. Ducky enjoyed his cars, playing the drums in a band, dancing, going to Dewey Beach, DE, and his family pets. He loved helping the neighbors, fixing everything around the house and keeping the house spotless. Ducky was a wonderful father. 

He is survived by one son: Timothy L. Shortlidge. Twin daughters: Kimberly L. Shortlidge and Kathy L. married to Al Sensenig.

Russel S. Hollinger

Russel S. Hollinger, 94, passed away on Friday, May 8, 2020 of natural causes. For the past 18 months, he resided at St. Anne's Retirement Community. He was the son of the late Charles B. and Katie Snavely Hollinger. Russel enjoyed 65 years of marriage with his beloved Esther, who passed away in 2012. For many years, he farmed along with delivering milk for Queen Dairy. He then worked as a mechanic at Kauffman Brothers, Mountville, eventually taking ownership in 1973, becoming R.S. Hollinger and Son. He worked with his sons in the family business until he retired at age 82. A kind and gentle man, Russel loved the Lord and lived his life as a man of integrity. He faithfully served at East Petersburg Mennonite Church as a Sunday School Teacher and superintendent. He served on the Board of Child Evangelism Fellowship for 21 years. Always a farmer at heart, he enjoyed gardening and working outdoors alongside his wife Esther. Together they demonstrated the gift of hospitality, sharing their home with family and friends. A favorite pastime was hiking and spending time at the family cabin in Tioga County.

Russel will be greatly missed by his family, consisting of four children: R. LaMar (Sharon) Hollinger; Sharon (Jay) Peifer; E. Lynn (Rita) Hollinger; and Leonard (Cheryl) Hollinger, along with 12 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. One brother: Donald (Alta) Hollinger. One sister: Arlene (Chester) Martin. He was preceded in death by two sisters: Jean Metzler and Pearl Weaver.

Karen K. Hodson

Karen K. Hodson, 74, of Lancaster, passed away on Tuesday, May 12, 2020 at Conestoga View. She was the wife of the late William C. Hodson, Sr., who passed away in 2013. She was born in Hatboro, daughter of the late Melvin W. and Aletta A. Strohecker Keller. Karen was a member of Rohrerstown Mennonite Church where she sang in the choir. She enjoyed reading, exercising, home-cooked meals with her family, the outdoors, playing bingo and shopping.

She is survived by one son: David W. Worthington, Quakertown. One daughter: Kristen L. (Bryan) Maier, Warrington. One sister: Linda L. (Gene F.) Catherson, Lancaster. She was preceded in death by one son: William C. Hodson, Jr.

Lewis S. "Lou" McMullen

Lewis S. "Lou" McMullen, 80, of Lancaster, passed away on Sunday, May 10, 2020 at Oak Leaf Manor-South. He was the husband of the late Lois A McMullen, who passed away in 1979 and the late Susan L. Albright McMullen, who passed away in 2016. He was born in Highville, son of the late Howard E. and Irene Sowers McMullen. Lou was an equipment operator for fifty years before his retirement. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and was a previous member of the Safe Harbor Hunting Club, and was a Little League baseball coach. He was a beloved father and grandfather.

He is survived by his children: Leslie L. McMullen and Lisa M. McMullen, both Washington Boro. His stepchildren: Cheryl T. (Mark P.) Scheid, Lancaster and Travis C. Albright, Conestoga. Seven grandchildren and one great-grandson. Two Brothers: Gerald S. McMullen, Conestoga; and Kenneth S. McMullen, Asheville, NC. One Sister: Jean S. McMullen, Conestoga. He was preceded in death by one brother: Harold S. McMullen.

Rhoda G. Mellinger

Rhoda G. Mellinger, 101, of the Mennonite Home, passed away on Thursday, May 7, 2020 at her residence. She was the wife of the late John H. Mellinger for 47 years before he passed away in 2013. She was born in Carlisle, daughter of the late Jesse and Ella Steckley Lehman. Rhoda was a graduate of Messiah Academy in 1936. She was a very active member of Manor Church and served in mission work, including San Francisco, CA. She enjoyed bird watching, working with flowers, traveling, and was a member of the Park City Twalkers.

She is survived by her step-children: Barry E. (Jeraline) Mellinger, Lancaster; Curtis L. Mellinger, Mountville; and Diane F. (Jerry S.) Edwards, Mount Joy. Three grandchildren: Josh (Christel) Mellinger, Newbury Park, CA; Abby (Jason) Gryszkowiec, Lititz; and Kristy (Gene) Clark, Lancaster. Eight great-grandchildren. One brother: Roy (Lois) Lehman, Mechanicsburg. She was preceded in death by five brothers and sisters.

John T. Jones

John T. Jones, 94, of Lancaster, passed away on Thursday, May 7, 2020 at Conestoga View. He was the husband of Mary L. Long Jones with whom he would have celebrated their 41st wedding anniversary on July 14, 2020. He was born in Mahanoy City, son of the late John and Edna Taylor Jones. He worked as an assembler at Burnham Corporation for more than 20 years before he retired in 1988. John was a member of Ironville United Methodist Church. He was a veteran of the US Army, serving during WWII and he enjoyed woodworking, drawing, hunting, and spending time with his family.

Surviving in addition to his wife, four sons: Robert (Betty) Jones, Homestead, FL; Jarred Jones, (fiance of Angie McKain), Mountville; Mark Jones (fiance of Tammy Stone), Bridgeport, NY; and Brian (Joanna) Reinoehl, Largo, FL. Two daughters: Cheryl Jones (Philip Hinkle), Millersville; and Marie Landis, Gap. Eleven grandchildren: Andrea, Cody, Austin, John, Rachel, Benny, Donnie, Johnna, Brenden, Samantha, and Collin. Twelve great-grandchildren: Ashlee, John, Taylor, Kelsey, Garrett, Julie, Natalie, Jacob, Vicki, Iyanna, Cody, and Oliver. One great-great-granddaughter: Charlee. One brother: Ivor (Elda) Jones, Marietta. Three sisters: Lorraine Brandau, Lancaster; Jeannette Zegley, Carlisle; and Avon (Delmar) Wagner, Newport. He was preceded in death by one daughter: Patricia Baldwin. Three brothers and one sister.

Eva L. Landis, 62, of Lancaster, passed away on Monday, May 4, 2020. She was the wife of Jack H. Landis with whom she would have celebrated their 31st wedding anniversary on May 20, 2020. She was born in Lancaster, daughter of the late John N., Sr. and Eva K. McCamant. She worked as an assistant manager for Fashion Bug for 13 years. Eva was a member of First Baptist Church; the Eastern Star, Columbia Chapter #366; and she enjoyed crafting.

Elva A. Renner

Elva A. Renner, 96, of Columbia, passed away on Saturday, May 2, 2020 at Luther Acres. She was the wife of the late Paul F. Renner who passed away on August 1, 1999. She was born in Bloomsburg, daughter of the late Clyde C. and Dora Mae Workman Ritter. She was a tube assembler for RCA Corp before her retirement. Elva was a member of St. James Lutheran Church; and the Eastern Star, Donegal Chapter #422. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, word search puzzles, dancing at SunnyBrook Ballroom, her cat, "Tinseltown", and her grand and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by two sons: Dennis W. Renner (companion: Michael Krone), Washington, DC; and Barry L. (Joan M.) Renner, Elkton, MD. Two grandchildren: Andrew L. (Annamaria) Renner and Angela M. Darrenkamp. Three great-grandchildren: Rylan S. and Ethan S. Darrenkamp; and Mia Rosalee Renner. She was preceded in death by one brother: Leonard Ritter. Two sisters: Helen Mosher and Elva's twin: Jean Fisher.

Gretna F. "Fran" Springer

Gretna F. "Fran" Springer, 96, formerly of Mountville, passed away on Tuesday, April 28, 2020 at Luther Acres. She was born in Woodbury, NJ, daughter of the late Gilbert O. and Gretna M. Weidner Stout. She was the wife of the late Lewis E. Springer for 63 years before he passed away in 2008. Raised in Reading and Manor Township, she was a graduate of Manor High School, and Lancaster General Hospital School of Nursing, as a Registered Nurse. Fran was stationed as a nurse at the VA Hospital, Bronx, NY in 1944-45. She also worked in office nursing at the Osteopathic and Lancaster General Hospitals. Prior to her retirement in 1976, she was a nursing supervisor at Columbia Hospital. Fran was a member of Manor Church. She enjoyed oil painting, was formerly active in Girl Scouts, was a former member of the Mountville Welfare Association, and was a feature writer of the Mountville News for the Columbia Newspaper.

Fran is survived by her daughters: Linda Fasnacht wife of Ray Fasnacht, Lancaster; and Shawnee Masse, Clarksville, VA. One granddaughter: Keshia, wife of Daniel Parker, Clarksville, VA. One grandson: Jason Masse, Harrisburg. Two great-grandsons: Michael Masse and Cole Parker. She was preceded in death by one grandson: D.J. Masse. One brother: Gilbert O. Stout, Jr.

Alden C. "Al" Transue

Alden C. "Al" Transue, 84, of Mountville, went home to be with his Lord on Tuesday, April 28, 2020. He was the husband of Merlyn L. Mosemann Transue with whom he would have celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary on July 27, 2020, and with whom he raised four children: Scott, Steve, Brenda, and Dave. He was also blessed with eleven grandchildren and one of his greatest blessings was his 19 great-grandchildren. He was born in Bethlehem, son of the late Clair and Edith Meyer Transue. Al was an only child who survived Polio while in Junior High School and later went on to play varsity football at McCaskey High School where he graduated in 1954. It was there that he met his wife. He went to work at age 18 to support his family at Armstrong World Industries for 42 years as a lab technician and retired as a purchasing agent in 1994. After Armstrong, he worked part time for over 20 years at the Manheim Auto Auction where he made many new friends. Later in life, long after his personal athletic achievements, those of his children and work career were over, his great-grandchildren provided him with pure joy, laughter, innocence and unconditional love. He moved his family to Mountville when he was 21 years old and was active in the community his entire life. Al was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church for over 50 years; the Mountville Lions Club for over 40 years, where he received the Melvin Jones Humanitarian Award and helped with numerous events over his more than 60 years in the community. In his mid-twenties, he became a key part of the Mountville Youth Programs, coaching both football and baseball. He graciously gave his time and wisdom to help shape and influence young boys who later became fathers and coaches themselves. Al, along with several other men in the community, were instrumental in creating a place where all youngsters could play baseball, helping to carve out a diamond in an old pasture, enabling all young kids to enjoy and learn the game of baseball. Golf was one of his greatest passions, having loved playing with many friends and family. He especially loved his annual trips to Myrtle Beach and the camaraderie with his sons, son-in-law, grandsons, and many close friends. He enriched the lives of many people and had countless friends. Al was an avid card player, with a quick wit and keen eye. He especially loved pinochle and enjoyed his last game only a few days before he passed away. Al was truly a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He will be missed by all whose lives he touched.

Anna K. "Toots" Mowrer

Anna K. "Toots" Mowrer, 97, of Columbia, passed away on Monday, April 27, 2020, of natural causes (non pandemic related), at Paramount Senior Living, Maytown. She was the wife of Richard G. Mowrer with whom she celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary on April 26, 2020. She was born in Silver Spring, daughter of the late John and Lizzie Bard Ginter. She was an inspector for Hamilton Watch Company for 18 years before her retirement in 1959. Toots was the oldest member of Concordia Evangelical Lutheran Church where she sang in the choir and was a Sunday school teacher. She enjoyed word and jigsaw puzzles, board games, her family and friends. She also enjoyed all Philadelphia sports teams and was an avid Penn State fan.

She was preceded in death by one brother: Jerome Ginter.

Bonnie L. Smith

Bonnie L. Smith, 71 of Lancaster, passed away on Monday, April 27, 2020 at Susquehanna Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born in Carlisle, daughter of the late Franklin A. and Viola M. Sheriff Smith. She attended Central Manor Church of God.

Bonnie is survived by three brothers and three sisters. She was preceded in death by her longtime companion: Ed Brubaker; four brothers and two sisters.

Dorothy E. Work

Dorothy E. Work, 97, of Mountville, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, April 24, 2020. She was born in East Lampeter, daughter of the late Willis A. and Ada Mae Snyder Smith. "Evie", that she liked to be called, was raised on a farm in Mountville and loved nature and the outdoors. She worked for many years at Hamilton Watch Company. Later, she moved to Bedford where she attended the Old Church in Bedford village. She loved to have family go with her to church when they visited on the weekends. She loved walking everyday and enjoyed gardening. Evie also ate healthy and looked younger than her age. She would play gin rummy with anyone for hours at a time. Her nieces and nephews have many fond memories of outings with her. Evie was the sweetest lady with a deep faith and had a good sense of humor. Being with family was important to her. Years later she moved back to Mountville where she worshiped at Silver Spring Baptist Church. And then later she resided at Conestoga View, where she loved the hymn sings. Evie loved the old gospel songs and now she can sing in the heavenly chorus with her brother, Lloyd Smith and sisters, Marian Kelshaw and Gladys Brubaker.

A funeral for a Christian is a celebration of a promotion which has already taken place. II Corinthians 5:8 says that, "To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord." Give thanks to the Lord for he is good. His love endures forever, I Corinthians 16:34.

She is survived by nine nieces and nephews.

Delores E. Baker

Delores E. Baker, 88, formerly of Wrightsville, passed away on Saturday, April 25, 2020 at St. Anne's Retirement Community. She was born in Columbia, daughter of the late Earl H. and Grace V. Hollinger Baker. Delores worked in the purchasing department at York International Corporation for 37 1/2 years before her retirement in 1988, and was a member of the 25 year club. She was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church; AARP; and the Book Nook at York Hospital. She enjoyed traveling, puzzles, reading, and loved the West. She also enjoyed her cousins' families, watching them grow into young adults.

She is survived by her cousins.

Susan M. Buehler

Susan M. Buehler, 62, of West Hempfield Township, passed away on Tuesday, April 21, 2020 at home. She was born in Philadelphia, daughter of the late James and Doris Boas Buehler. She worked in marketing for the Jay Group; was a 1975 graduate of Lancaster Catholic High School; attended the University of Pittsburgh and was a graduate of Temple University. She was a member of St. Leo the Great Catholic Church and will be lovingly remembered by the Williams-Miller, Crawford, and the Neill families.

The Private Graveside Service and Burial will be held at St. Joseph's New Catholic Cemetery.
