Sherry L. Blake, 74, of Mountville, passed away on Friday, October 2, 2020. She was born in Syracuse, NY, daughter of the late Manuel Harvey Near and Shirley Dasey Billet. She worked as a secretary at Lancaster Rehabilitation Hospital for the last several years. Sherry was a graduate of Lebanon Valley College, Class of 2004. She was an avid reader, enjoyed old movies, arts and crafts and all of the activities associated with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her son Shawn M. Blake and daughter-in-law Michelle P. Blake and two grandchildren Ava Patricia and Roman Vincent. In addition she is survived by her brothers Michael, Jim and John Billet. Sherry was preceded in death by her sisters Barbara and Kathy.

The Celebration of Life Service will be held at Victory Church, Greenfield Campus, 1827 Freedom Road, Lancaster on Saturday, October 10, 2020 at 2:00 P.M. with Pastor Curt Seaburg, officiating. Christopher B. Presler, 61, of West Hempfield Township, passed away on Monday, September 28, 2020 at Hershey Medical Center. He was the husband of Norma A. Heisey Presler, with whom he would have celebrated their 28th wedding anniversary in December, 2020. Chris was born in Plainfield, NJ, son of the late Elmon and Florence Montross Presler. He was the Director of R&D for Valley Extrusions, Allentown for 11 years, and was a member of Victory Church, Greenfield Campus. Chris enjoyed Harley Davidson motorcycles, his family, children and friends, his dogs: Harley, Deco, and Riggins (deceased), the Dallas Cowboys, Detroit Red Wings, NASCAR with Bill and Chase Elliott being his favorite drivers.

Surviving in addition to his wife, one daughter: Jennifer L. Bare, Felton. One son: Christopher B. Presler, Jr., Leader Heights. Two granddaughters: Morgan and Leeanna. One brother: Bruce A. (Amelia) Presler, Sarasota, FL. One sister: Sandra L. (Patrick) Elwell, Naples, NY.

Gerald S. Edwards, Jr., 73, of Mount Joy, passed away on Thursday, September 24, 2020 at home. He was the husband of Diane F. Mellinger Edwards with whom he was married for 21 years. He was born in Columbia, son of the late Gerald S., Sr. and Betty Thomas Edwards. He worked for RR Donnelley & Sons for 42 years and attended LCBC, Manheim Campus. He enjoyed woodworking, hunting, grilling, music, and making CD's.

Surviving in addition to his wife, his children: Shannon (Stephanie) Edwards; Christian (Jamie) Edwards; and Trevor Edwards. Four grandchildren: Brenden, Brayden, Reese and Parker. Siblings: Gale (Robert) Snyder; Sylvia (Leo) Watts; Brenda (Leonard) Domyan; and Glenn (Annette Loose) Edwards.

Ruth E. "Bonnie" Beecher, 96, of West Hempfield Twp., passed away on Sunday, September 20, 2020. She was born in Lancaster, daughter of the late Charles and Mabel Nonemacher Harple. She worked in the nursing department of LGH from 1970 until her retirement in 1987. Bonnie was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, and a Veteran of the US Navy, serving during WWII and the Korean Conflict. Bonnie enjoyed golfing, reading and playing cards.

She is survived by one son: Greg P. Beecher, West Hempfield Twp. She was the last of her immediate family. Bonnie was preceded in death by 5 brothers and 3 sisters.

The Graveside Service and entombment will be held at Conestoga Memorial Park Mausoleum on Monday, September 28, 2020 at 2:00 P.M. Military Honors will be accorded. Melvin "Mel" VonStetten, Jr., 94, of Mountville, passed away on Saturday, September 12, 2020. He was the husband of Geraldine Kauffman VonStetten with whom he was married for 72 years. Mel was born in Ironville, son of the late Melvin, Sr. and Mary Russell VonStetten. He obtained his Journeyman Plumbing License and worked for the local union before working for Armstrong World Industries before his retirement in 1988. Following retirement, he worked for the Manheim Auto Auction. Mel was a lifelong, very active member of Concordia Evangelical Lutheran Church where he served on its Council. He was a very proud Veteran of the US Navy, serving during WWII; a member of the Ironville Rod & Gun Club, and enjoyed fishing at his cottage at Bowers Beach, DE. He was the best husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. Everywhere he went, he told everyone to call him "Pap". Pap left an impression on anyone and everyone that he crossed paths with. He had a smile that lit up any room, and had a kind heart like Jesus.

Surviving in addition to his wife, one son: Barry (Susan) VonStetten, Landisville. One daughter: Debra (Pete) Musser, Mountville. Four grandchildren: Brian VonStetten; Kelleye VonStetten; Zach (Ashley) Musser; and Carly Musser. Three great-grandchildren. One sister: Shirley Bowers. He was preceded in death by three sisters.

Jennifer L. Thompson, 48, of Landisville, passed away on Wednesday, September 9, 2020 at home. She was the wife of Frank A. Thompson to whom she was married for 22 years. Jen was born in Lancaster, daughter of Ronald E. and Kay M. Foster Crawford, Landisville. She was a researcher, having worked for Hershey Medical Center and Astra Zeneca. She was a graduate of Hempfield High School, Class of 1990, and the University of Pittsburgh, Class of 1994 where she received a degree in Behavioral Neuroscience and Chemistry. She graduated Magna Cum Laude with her Master's Degree in Forensic Medicine from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2003. She was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan. Her passions were her love for her family and friends, running and her husky dogs and she unconditionally loved people. Jen enjoyed traveling to the islands, family vacations to Ocean City, NJ and Jerry Garcia music. She was very supportive of the Lupus Foundation, and also her daughter's, nieces and nephews sporting events. Her family meant a lot to her.

Surviving in addition to her husband and parents, one daughter: Kaylee R. Thompson, at home. Siblings: Ronald E. (Michele R.) Crawford, Jr., Kankakee, IL; Lynda J. (Bob) Martin, Lancaster; and Jeffrey S. (Tonya) Crawford, Bangor, PA. Nieces and nephews: Clayton; Tyler; Alec; Marissa; and Delaney. Father and mother-in-law: Robert and Kathy Thompson, Lancaster.

Dorothy Johns Gard, 101, passed away, the evening of September 9, 2020 at the Mennonite Home. She was married for 61 years to George E. Gard who passed away in 2003. Born in 1918 in Lancaster, she was the daughter of the late George H. Johns and Anna Killian Johns. After the early death of her mother, Dorothy grew up in the Johns family home in Columbia with her father and his sister Anna (Aunt Annie to the grandkids). Dorothy was an accomplished piano player, studying under Prof. J. Carl Knisley and was a member of the Knisley 8 Piano Ensemble that practiced and played concerts in York, PA in the 30’s. Dorothy graduated from Columbia High School in 1936 and was the class Salutatorian, which gained her a scholarship to help her pursue a College education at Penn State University. Dorothy graduated from PSU in 1940 with the class that donated the famous Nittany Lion statue. After college she began a teaching career in Paradise, PA as a French teacher. In 1942, she married George E. Gard, her college beau, and started raising a family of three children, Barbara, George, and Linda, who all graduated from Hempfield High School. After the kids were out of the house, Dot and her husband, George, started fixing up the family farmhouse outside of Columbia, along the Route 30 bypass (remember the famous white horse that stood watch over the bypass). There they would enjoy 30 years tending their garden and fruit trees and entertaining in the summer house with its beehive wood fired oven. Dorothy was a lifelong member of Salem UCC in Columbia. She also enjoyed volunteering at the Columbia Library. Dorothy remained on the farm until 2006, at which point she moved to Woodcrest Villa on the Harrisburg Pike where she lived until 2016, when she moved across the street to live at the Mennonite Home. Dorothy’s passion was her family and genealogy. Spending countless hours on her computer, visiting cemeteries, and traveling to national archives, she worked to chronicle the history of the Gard and Johns family heritage. Dorothy continued to keep in touch with family and friends via her computer well into her 101st year. Dorothy (Dot) Gard was a special Lady, a special person. She will be greatly missed.

Dorothy is survived by her three children and four grandchildren: Barbara Gard and husband Phil Kohl of Antrim, NH and their son, Owen Kohl, Chicago, IL and daughter, Mira Kohl, New Orleans, LA and fiancé, Tom Edick; George J. Gard and wife Molly Gard of York, PA and their son, George H. Gard and wife, Hannah Zellers, Boston, MA and son, Fred Gard, York, PA; and Rev. Linda K. Gard, New Gloucester, ME.

The Family would like to thank the health care workers at the Mennonite Home for their brave, dedicated service and care during this unprecedented time of the coronavirus pandemic.

Mary Jane Groff, 76, of Lancaster, went to her eternal home on Monday, September 7, 2020 at Conestoga View, while under the care of Hospice. She was born in Lancaster, daughter of the late Earl B. and Esther S. Groff Groff and step-mother Mary Fry Groff, Lititz. Mary Jane worked for many years as an LPN with mothers and babies in the Washington Hospital Center, Washington, DC. She retired from Friendship Communities, Lititz and was a member of Crossway Church.

Surviving in addition to her step-mother, her siblings: Allan (Dore) Groff, Lancaster; and Barbara Groff (Brooks Harding), Ephrata. She was preceded in death by one sister: Anna Elizabeth Groff.

The Private Burial will be in Mellinger Mennonite Cemetery. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date at Crossway Church. Jean E. Grider, 95, of Columbia, passed away on Friday, September 4, 2020 at St. Anne's Retirement Community. She was the wife of the late Clayton G. Grider, who passed away on October 27, 1992. She was born in Columbia, daughter of the late Edwin, Sr. and Margaret VonStetton Greider. She was a packer/inspector for Susquehanna Glass Co. before her retirement. Jean was a member of Columbia United Methodist Church, and a lifetime member of the Eastern Star.

She is survived by one son: David C. (Lynette R.) Grider, Columbia. One daughter: Donna J. (Dennis J.) Splain, Allentown. Four grandchildren: Chadd D. (Jennifer) Grider; Marc D. (Carolyn) Grider; Jay D. (Megan) Splain; and Jenna D. (Joshua) Schray. Nine great-grandchildren: Madison, Avery, Ella, Nora, Noah, Jonah, Micah, Caleb, and Althea. One brother: Marlin Greider, Villa Park, IL. She was preceded in death by two brothers: Edwin Greider, Jr. and R. Dale Greider.

Alma H. Mease, 94, of West Hempfield Township, passed away on Monday, August 31, 2020 at Oak Leaf Manor North. She was the wife of the late Harry I. Mease to whom she was married for 55 years prior to his passing in 2011. She was born in Columbia, daughter of the late William A. and Sophie Smith Haberstroh. She was a graduate of Columbia High School, Class of 1943. During school, Alma played the accordion and once was called up onstage at Janson Park to play with Reg Kehoe and his All Girl Marimba Band. Alma was a teller at Columbia Trust Company for 15 years. She then became a stay-at-home mom to her three boys. She was always proud of her three boys and later "her three daughters". Alma returned to banking and became manager for the former Commonwealth National Bank in Willow Street and Millersville for 18 years before her retirement in 1986. She was a lifelong member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and the Altar Rosary Society. Having been very talented at sewing and other arts and crafts, she made her own dresses for many years as well as her bridesmaids' dresses. She also enjoyed reading and going to the beach with her family at Ocean City, MD. She fully enjoyed her retirement, having traveled both the United States and abroad, and wintering in Florida.

Surviving are her sons: H. Michael (Sandra) Mease; Robert B. (Deborah) Mease; and David M. (Kimberly) Mease. Four grandchildren: Eric (Kimberly); Christine (Patrick Kundravi); Nicholas and Daniel; and five step-great-grandchildren. Her twin brothers: Edward (Rose) Haberstroh; and Phillip R. (Anne) Haberstroh. She was preceded in death by her granddaughter: Michaela Mease; her brother: William Haberstroh and her sisters: Ruth Albright and Betty Lou Overmeyer.

The Family would like to thank the courageous staff at Oak Leaf Manor North for the wonderful care shown to Alma.

Toa Vu Dang, 76, of Mountville, passed away on Sunday, August 30, 2020. He was the husband of My Ngoc Le. He was born in Hanoi, Vietnam, son of the late Tien Vu Dang and Nguyen Thi Binh. He worked as a software technician and was a member of the Vietnamese Alliance Church, Landisville. Toa was a very sweet, friendly and kind person.

Surviving in addition to his wife, one daughter and son-in-law. Two grandchildren. Numerous brothers and sisters.

William G. Heckman, 77, of Bainbridge, passed away on Tuesday, August 25, 2020 at Hershey Medical Center. He was the husband of Charlotte A. Gusler Heckman. He was born in Pottsville, son of the late Jerome W. and Dorothy Mae Smith Heckman. He was a Trooper for the Pennsylvania State Police for 12 years before his retirement.

Surviving in addition to his wife, his children: David A. Heckman, Middletown; Lesley A. (David) Viola, Middletown; and Scott C. Heckman, Northumberland. One step-daughter: Amanda E. Gingrich-Peterson, Harrisburg. Four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. One sister: Bonnie Bohenick, Harrisburg.

Grace L. Kriner, 87, a lifelong resident of Columbia, passed away on Sunday, August 23, 2020 at Susquehanna Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was the wife of the late Clyde F. “Rock” Kriner, Sr. who passed away on September 9, 1998. She was born in Columbia, daughter of the late George, Sr. and Rachel G. Price Millar. She worked at K.D. Tool and also at ITT Grinnell. She was of the Christian faith and was a member of Chickies Rock Lodge #307 of the Moose. She enjoyed her trips to Ocean City, MD and Glendale, AZ. Grace just adored the town of Columbia, and was a great mother, grandmother, great and great-great grandmother.

She is survived by her children: Clyde F. Kriner, Jr., Lancaster; Lenore G. (Craig A., Sr.) Manley, Columbia; Dottie (Richard) Collison, Harrington, DE; and George Kriner, Arkansas. Ten grandchildren. Five great-grandchildren. One great-great grandchild. One brother: Donald (Shirley) Millar, York. She was preceded in death by one daughter: Christine M. Kriner; one granddaughter: Lenore Catherine Brubaker; seven brothers and sisters.
