George C. Schwert, 84, of Columbia, passed away at home on Thursday, August 7, 2025, after a second stroke in a few months. He was married to his loving wife, Janet Gainer Schwert, for 58 years. He was born in Columbia son of the late George H. and Edna Ehly Schwert.
George was a graduate of Columbia High School, Class of 1959 and a Veteran of the US Army, serving during the Vietnam Conflict. He was a life member of the Mountville Fire Company and the Reese-Hall, VFW Post 8757, Mountville. George was a member of the Mountville Church of the Brethren, where he served as a youth leader and as the custodian for 20 years.
He was employed at Kahn-Lucas and as a truck driver for Kerek Air Freight. He was also a custodian for the Hempfield School District before his retirement. George most enjoyed his family, camping, NASCAR, home remodeling and serving his church.
Surviving in addition to his wife, four children: Tammie Mutzabaugh; Brian Schwert; Kevin Schwert and Kelli (John) O'Hara. Five grandchildren: Alex and Austin Mutzabaugh, Hollie Schwert, Alexis Kopp and Zachary Schwert. Three great-grandchildren: Dr. Marissa Kopp, Kalab and Jackson Hogarth.
The Memorial Service will be held at the Mountville Church of the Brethren, 60 Clay Street, Mountville, PA 17554 on Saturday, August 16, 2025, at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor Angela Finet, officiating. Military Honors to follow. The Visitation will be from10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. The family requests that everyone wear bright colors. Interment in the adjoining church cemetery. Please omit flowers.
