Jacob S. Ginder

Jacob S. Ginder, 93, formerly of Mount Joy, passed away on Monday, December 25, 2017 at Lancaster General Hospital. He was the husband of the late Edna K. Ginder, with whom he celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on September 4, 2017 before she passed away on October 30, 2017. He was born in Rapho Township, son of the late Daniel W. and Lizzie Shelly Ginder. Jacob retired from farming in 1996, also bought and sold used farm equipment and drove school bus for the Manheim Central School District. He was a member of the Mountville Mennonite Church since 1947 where he served as Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School Secretary, served on the Summer Bible School Committee, the Stewardship Committee, Church Building Committee, and was a Trustee. Jacob was devoted to his family, helping his children on their family farms, and lovingly cared for his wife Edna, through many years of her illness.

He is survived by one son: Nelson Ginder, husband of Mary (Harnish) Ginder, Mount Joy. Two daughters: Ruth, wife of Merrill Borntrager, Mount Joy, and Arlene, wife of David Keller, East Berlin. Two grandsons. Ten granddaughters. Twelve great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers: Benjamin Ginder and Isaac Ginder.

Richard A. Yalch

Richard A. Yalch, 64, of Millersville, passed away on Friday, December 22, 2017. He was the husband of Bambi L. Hogg Yalch. He was born in Boston, son of Theodore Yalch, Texas and the late Irene Butts Yalch. He was a processing operator for Esbenshade Farms. He attended Grace Community Church, Willow Street; was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose #596, Elizabethtown; and was an avid Boston Red Sox fan and New England Patriots fan.

Surviving in addition to his wife and father, children: Toni, Irene, and Zana Yalch, Katie (Chris) Fisher, and Kristopher Siglin. Four grandchildren. One brother. Three sisters and was preceded in death by one brother.

John A. "Jack" McGeehan

John A. “Jack” McGeehan, 94, of Lancaster, passed away on Wednesday, December 20, 2017 at home. He was the husband of the late Elizabeth J. McGeehan, who passed away on November 6, 2017. He was born in Philadelphia, son of the late Edward and Winifred McHugh McGeehan. Jack worked as an electrician for RCA Corp before his retirement. He was a member of St. Leo the Great Catholic Church; was a graduate of Mahanoy High School, Class of 1942; was a veteran of the US Army, serving during WWII; and was a member of the American Legion Post #34.

He is survived by two sons: Robert J. McGeehan, Mountville and John K. (Susan) McGeehan, McDaniel, MD. One granddaughter: Katie McGeehan. He was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.

Joyce M. Landis

Joyce M. Landis, 78, of Mountville, passed away on Tuesday, December 19, 2017 following a brief illness. She was the wife of Harry L. Landis with whom she recently celebrated 60 years of marriage. She was born in Lancaster, daughter of the late Edward and Kathryn Keenan Wilson. Joyce worked for over 20 years for KD Tool Company and later retired from Shank’s Extracts. She enjoyed gardening, bingo, painting of crafts, and especially spending time with her precious Shih-Tzu, Anna Belle.

Surviving in addition to her husband, one brother: Edward (Ellen) Wilson, Columbia. One step-brother: Earl (Joyce) Forman, Lititz. Also in-laws, nieces and nephews.

Janet F. Zimmerman

Janet F. Zimmerman, 87, of Columbia, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family on Sunday, December 17, 2017 at home. She was the wife of the late Paul W. Zimmerman, Jr. who passed away on March 4, 2017. Janet was born in Chester County, daughter of the late Albert and Kathryn Fagan Ferguson. She was a switch board operator for Slaymaker Lock Company for 30 years before her retirement in 1985. She was a graduate of JP McCaskey High School, Class of 1948 and enjoyed crafts, painting slates, her cats, traveling, her family and friends, especially her grandchildren.

She is survived by one daughter: Terri L. Zimmerman. One son: Michael B. (Andrea M.) Zimmerman, all of Columbia. Four grandchildren: Desiree E. Patton,  Michael D. Patton, Paul M. Zimmerman and Bryan A. Zimmerman. One great-granddaughter: Araya Luna. One sister: Phyllis A. Kauffman, Lancaster.

Mary Mindy Gogets Stump

Mary Mindy Gogets Stump, 90, of Bethel, passed away on Tuesday, December 12, 2017 at St. Anne’s Retirement Community, Columbia. She was the wife of the late John Gogets, who passed away in 1985, and K. Eugene Stump with whom she celebrated their 22nd wedding anniversary on July 15, 2017. She was born in St. Clair, daughter of the late Andrew and Anna Vojtela Mindy. Mary was a specialty cake baker and was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Chapel. She enjoyed reading, history, gardening, animals, was a super, best companion and loving wife to her husband and was a wonderful, giving mother.

Surviving in addition to her husband, her children: Nancy Gogets, Lancaster; John C. Gogets, Tulsa, OK; and Mary Gogets, Lancaster. Two granddaughters: Katie and Lexi Gogets. Two sisters: Anna Vespico and Helen Morgan, both of Fredericksburg. She was preceded in death by two bothers: Andrew and Joseph Mindy.

Donald S. Dombach, Sr.

Donald S. Dombach, Sr., 76, of Brownstown, passed away on Thursday, December 14, 2017. He was the companion of many years of Charlene E. Regener. He was born in Columbia, son of the late Martin M. and Marian M. Swarr Dombach. He was a machine operator for NTN-BCA formerly Federal Mogul for many years before his retirement. He was a member of First Church of God, and a Veteran of the US Marine Corps. Don enjoyed traveling, gardening, collecting classic cars, and his antique tractor.

Surviving in addition to his companion, one son: Donald S. (Laura M.) Dombach, Jr., Millersville. Two grandchildren: Kaitlyn M. and Zachary J. C. Two sisters: Nancy Weiss and Kay Danz. One brother: Jeffrey Dombach.

Gary T. Ruffhead

Gary T. Ruffhead, 84, of Lancaster, beloved husband and father, went home to be with the Lord, on Wednesday, December 6, 2017. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Ruth Strickland Ruffhead. Three children: Thomas Ruffhead; Sarah Miller; and Richard Ruffhead. Five grandchildren. Two step-grandchildren. Three great-grandchildren. He served in the US Navy and was honorably discharged in February of 1958. He proudly served the Boy Scouts of America for 32 years as a Professional Scout Executive, before his retirement in 1989. Gary was a very active member of Grace United Methodist Church; member and past president of Lancaster Men’s Garden Club and raised award winning miniature roses as a hobby. He was a long-standing member of the Lancaster Optimist Club and served as president in 1982.

Richard K. "Pops" Markley

Richard K. “Pops” Markley, 65, of Columbia, passed away on Monday, December 4, 2017. He was born in Columbia, son of Lucille Ford Fuhrman, Columbia and the late Valentine E. Markley. He worked as a pressman for JL Clark, Co. for 47 years before his retirement in January, 2017 and also worked at Leisure Lanes, for over 20 years. He was a veteran of the US Navy, serving during the Vietnam Conflict and was a member of the American Legion Post #34; the Red Rose Memorial VFW Post #2435; and the Hambones Social Club. Pops enjoyed spending time with his Loxley family; bowling; watching golf; and the Philadelphia Eagles Football.

Surviving in addition to his mother, two sons: Christopher (Monica) Markley, Wrightsville; and Matt W. (Nicole) Markley, Lancaster. Two grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, and numerous siblings. He was preceded in death by two brothers.

Jeanne M. Hinrichsen Nehren Sweater

Jeanne M. Hinrichsen Nehren Sweater, 85 of Lancaster, entered the heavenly gates peacefully, under Hospice care on the evening of Tuesday, December 5, 2017, while residing at Country Meadows. She was the wife of the late Richard C. Sweater, before he passed away in 1978. She was born in Rushville, NE, and graduated from Sturgis High School in South Dakota. After High School, she was employed as a telephone operator in South Dakota, married Richard C. Sweater, and Elsworth Air Force Base soldier from Quarryville. This union brought her to the East Coast to continue her life raising her family. She was employed in the 60’s by “Ma-Bell” Telephone Company in Lancaster and retired from Lancaster Avionics. She enjoyed time with her loved ones, neighbors, and Bible Study group. She reached out to helping others, and always greeted each day with a positive approach.

She is survived by her significant other and long-time friend, Lester N. Miller. One son: Richard K. Sweater, Lititz. Two daughters: Sharon Sweater-Schauer, (Gary), Lancaster. Roxanne Sweater Pierzyna (Scott), Red Wing, MN. Nine grandchildren. Five great-grandchildren. One sister: Patricia P. Nehren, Florida. One brother: William Nehren, Florida. Also, her favorite Westie Dog, “Casey”. She was the loving mother of her late son: Michael R. Sweater, who passed away in 2015, and a loving sister to her late sister: Phyllis Stanish, and her late brother: Thomas Hinrichsen.

The Family wants to express their sincerest gratitude for all of the caring, loving support received from family, friends, and all of the staff member of Country Meadows Retirement Community, Caring Hospice, and Homeinstead, during Jeanne’s final weeks. Eleanor "El" Rita (Butkiewicz) Boppel

Eleanor “El” Rita (Butkiewicz) Boppel, 79, of Ringtown, formerly of Lancaster, escaped her ravaged, worldly body on Sunday, December 3, 2017. She faced the next stage of her existence peacefully in the loving arms of her daughter, Susan. Her passing is a true blessing for her having suffered for 19 years from Huntington’s Disease.

Eleanor leaves behind her husband: John Carl Boppel and five daughters: Linda Boppel (Tom Didyoung); Susan Boppel Marks (Tom); Maryann Weiss (Bryan); Denise Clear (Michael); and Joan Lahr, whom all loved Eleanor deeply, but are happy she is now free. Eleanor was blessed with eleven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. One sister-in-law: Genevieve Butkiewicz She was born in Mount Carmel, to the late Stanley and Anna Kimsal Butkiewicz. She was preceded in death by her eight brothers and sisters, and her beloved grandson: Derek Lee Weiss.

Eleanor did a bang up job of raising five children to be independent “can do” women. She instilled in them the ability to get things done, taking charge and be creative. It was nothing to find Eleanor out climbing scaffolding, painting the house, chopping down trees, or creating a homey environment by refinishing and reupholstering discarded furniture. While Eleanor was not the greatest cook, she kept her family well fed and inspired her daughters to learn how to cook. Eleanor threw a mean Christmas party for 40+, made custom wedding dresses for family and friends, and knew the meaning of every word of the Word Power section of the Reader’s Digest. She was vibrant, loved life, loved hiking and biking, cross-country road trips, root beer brewing, wine (aka vinegar making), fasnacht baking, pinochle, and aerobic dance parties in the living room. Eleanor loved her brothers and sisters with whom she had lifelong friendships, and we hope that they are together again. First and foremost though, Eleanor loved her babies-children and grandchildren alike, and was in her glory taking care of the babies. Eleanor,while not a confidant, shopper, or coddler, showed her love to her children by tender nurturing.

Momma/Nana always made toast and tea, and gave the children a gentle touch, letting them know that she wished she could take away their illness. In later life, she showed her love by helping with the grandkids, helping with college, and shoveling out multiple cars in the midst of a blizzard to enable her daughter’s wedding day to go on as planned, amongst many other practical displays of love. We will miss you, Mom and are grateful to you for helping us become the women that we are.

A final thought: Life is short, live it to the fullest and embrace every day with joy and love, or as Eleanor would say (and do) “Life is short, eat dessert first”.

Larry R. Harnish

Larry R. Harnish, 78, of Lancaster, passed away on Saturday, December 2, 2017 at the Lebanon VA Medical Center. He was the husband of Ursula H. Jagusch Harnish, to whom he was married for 45 years. He was born in Lancaster, son of the late Mearl and Ida Harnish. Larry was self-employed in Sales and Phone Systems. He was a Veteran of the US Navy; and was a Master Mason having been a member of the Pasadena Lodge #290 F&AM and other masonic organizations in California. He was a Masonic member for 50 years. 

Larry was one of ten children in his family.

Charles R. Waltman, Jr.

Charles R. Waltman, Jr., 74, of Mountville, passed away on Saturday, November 25, 2017 at home. He was born in Lancaster, son of the late Charles R., Sr., and Kathryn E. Aulthouse Waltman. He worked as a laborer for Campbell Bag and Burlap Company, Trenton, NJ before his retirement. He was a Veteran of the US Army and enjoyed fishing, stamp collecting and golfing.

He is survived by three brothers: Barry R. Waltman, Lititz; Larry R. (Judith) Waltman, Mountville; and James R. (Priscilla) Waltman, Lancaster. He was preceded in death by one sister: Verna Mae Kreider.

Ellen M. Arnold

Ellen M. Arnold, 70, of Columbia, passed away on Wednesday, November 29, 2017. She was the wife of the late Chester R. Arnold, Jr. She was born in Columbia, daughter of the late Amos M., Sr., and Thelma Collier Swarr. She worked as a Tow Motor Operator for ITT Grinnell and as a Custodian for the Columbia School District and the Hempfield School District, from where she retired. Ellen was a member of Silver Spring Baptist Church and enjoyed bowling and traveling.

Surviving are her step-children: Chester Arnold, III; Alan (Kelly) Arnold, all of Columbia; Marlyn (Sue) Arnold, Georgia; and Colleen Arnold-Wade, Delaware. Eleven step-grandchildren and numerous step-great-grandchildren. One sister: Ruth A. Mahan, Columbia. Niece: Trudy L. (Earl) Zink, Hellam. Nephew: Dennis Mahan, Columbia.

Blanche A. Henry

Blanche A. Henry, 105, formerly of Manor Township, passed away on Saturday, November 25, 2017, at the Mennonite Home. She was the wife of the late Ira G. Henry, to whom she was married for 59 years before he passed away. She was born in Manor Twp., daughter of the late Christian H. and Annie Bireley Murr and was a production worker for Schick and Hamilton Watch Company. Blanche was the oldest member of Stehman Memorial United Methodist Church having been a devout Christian of her faith, reading her Bible daily. She was a graduate of Manor-Joint High School, Class of 1929  and enjoyed knitting, crocheting, gardening, flowers, going to auctions and sales, and antiques.

She is survived by one daughter: Joan M. Webb, Manor Twp. Three grandchildren: Sylvia A. (Jay) Shertzer, Washington Boro; Sherlyn K. (Fred, Jr.) Kurtz, Mount Joy; and K. Eugene (Nancy) Henry, York. Six great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. One sister: Ruth Binkley, Millersville. She was preceded in death by one son: Kenneth E. Henry. One great-granddaughter: Shelby Myers. Two brothers: Clyde and Howard Murr. Three sisters: Margaret Lehman; Anna Warfel; and Verna Newcomer.

Paul H. Hinkle, Jr.

Paul H. Hinkle, Jr., 83, of Fleetwood, formerly of Marietta, passed away on Wednesday, November 22, 2017 at Kutztown Manor. He was the husband of Dolores M. Ford Hinkle, with whom he celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary on September 3, 2017. He was born in Marietta, son of the late Paul H., Sr. and Esther Alberts Hinkle. Paul was a truck driver for Consolidate Freightways for 24 years and was a veteran of the US Army serving during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Grace Evangelical Congregational Church; the VFW and American Legion. He enjoyed traveling, grocery shopping, his dog, “Sniffles”, and his passion was his family. He also worked with the prison ministry in Allentown.

Surviving in addition to his wife, one son: John W. Hinkle, Troy, PA. Two daughters: Pennie J. (Joel J.) Kehres, Lancaster; and Wendy J. (Mike) Medina, Fleetwood. Ten grandchildren. Edward M. Harmes, 73, of Willow Street, passed away on Monday, November 20, 2017 at home. He was the husband of Patricia Cameron Harmes, with whom he celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary on February 22, 2017. He was born in Lancaster, son of the late Ross M. and Helen Lefever Harmes. He worked in Human Resources for High Industries, for more than 40 years before his retirement.

Michael L. Waltman

Michael L. Waltman, 58, of Landisville, passed away on Thursday, November 9, 2017 at UPMC Pinnacle-Harrisburg. He was born in Lancaster, son of Ralph N., Sr. and Audrey Huber Waltman, Lancaster. He was an avid Philadelphia Eagles and Phillies fan, and enjoyed trivia games and playing Jeopardy.

Surviving in addition to his parents, two daughters: Jennifer M. (Jesse T.) Hoffman, Mountville; and Ashlee E. (Matthew R.) Knarr, Waynesboro. One son: Michael O. (Elissa) Waltman, Columbia. Seven grandchildren: Jared, Landon, Emma, Delanie, Blair, Braxton, and Bailey. Two brothers and two sisters. He is also survived by his dog: Teenie “Lulu”.

Elizabeth J. "Betty" McGeehan

Elizabeth J. “Betty” McGeehan, 90, of Lancaster, passed away on Monday, November 6, 2017 at Susquehanna Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was the wife of John A. McGeehan with whom they celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary on June 5, 2017. She was born Mahanoy City, daughter of the late Gilbert and Marie Lee Brayford. She was a member of St. Leo the Great Catholic Church and was a loving wife and mother.

Surviving in addition to her husband, two sons: Robert J. McGeehan, Mountville; and John K. (Susan) McGeehan, McDaniel, MD. One granddaughter: Katie McGeehan.
