Norman J. Fortier

It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Norman J. Fortier, who departed from this world at home on June 5, 2026, at the age of 82. Born in Sherbrooke, Canada, Norman was the beloved son of Herman and Gertrude Fortier. His life was a testament to kindness, dedication, and the joy of simple pleasures. Norman was a devoted husband to his wife, Christine Boyd, whom he married September 6, 1970. Together, they crafted a life filled with love raising their two children.  Norman was devoted to her care until Christine's passing in 2021. Norman was also predeceased by his sister, Claudette.

Norman worked for his entire career at National Standard and Mt. Joy Wire as a Production Supervisor. He was an avid golfer, he found happiness in being outside, working on his golf skills and forging lasting friendships. His winters were joyfully spent in Florida, spending time with his son and grandchildren.  Norman participated in the Lancaster Bocce league and formed many friendships with his team “High Rollers”

Known for his unwavering willingness to help others, Norman was constantly busy with a variety of projects, whether for himself or lending a hand to those in need. His Friday night dinners out with close friends were a cherished tradition that brought him immense joy and connection.

He leaves behind a legacy of love in his surviving family, including his son, Jamie A. Fortier of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and his daughter, Jillian L. Stauffer, along with her husband Anthony of Lancaster, PA.  Norman was a proud and devoted grandfather to Gabrielle and Marc Fortier, and Brady and Wyatt Stauffer, who were the light of his life. He also leaves behind many loving nieces and nephews.

Honoring Norman's wishes, no formal funeral will be held. A Celebration of Life will take place later this summer. Mary Jane Reed

Mary Jane Reed, of Silver Spring, passed away on Tuesday, June 9, 2026. She was the wife of the late Attorney Thomas H. Reed, who passed away on December 12, 2006. 

She is survived by one daughter. One grandson and one great-granddaughter. Two step great-granddaughters and one great-great-grandson. She was preceded in death by one daughter.

Walter C. Talbot

Walter C. Talbot, 87, of Lancaster, passed away on Wednesday, May 20, 2026. He was the husband of Shirley M. Crouse Talbot with whom he would have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on November 11, 2026. He was born in Rockingham, NC, son of the late John Talbot, Sr. Walter was a tax accountant before his retirement. He was a Veteran of the US Navy, and a member of Lancaster Alliance Church, where he enjoyed singing in the choir. Walter enjoyed traveling and listening to the New Holland Band.

He is survived by one son: B. Scott (Susan) Talbot, Dallas, TX. One daughter: Connie R. (David Raymond) Burke, Mountville. Seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son: Tim Talbot, one daughter: Becky Showalter, one granddaughter: Amanda Showalter and five siblings.

Leroy Mull

Leroy Mull, 93, of Conestoga, passed away on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, at Homestead Village. He was the husband of the late Jane K. Mull. Leroy was born in Lancaster, son of the late Roy and Anna Mary Frey Mull. He worked as a truck driver for Shawnee Transportation Company and was a farmer before his retirement. He attended Smithville Church of God and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He is survived by two sons: Michael J. (Kathy) Mull and Douglas P. (Sherry) Mull. One daughter: Kristine S. Costarella. Nine grandchildren. Fourteen great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one sister: Maryann Cale.

Joseph Mento, Jr.

Joseph Mento, Jr. entered the Kingdom of Heaven on Sunday, May 17, 2026, at the age of 71. He is survived by his two daughters, Jenna L. (Robert M.) Wholaver and Juliana L. Mento; and three grandchildren, Weston, Waiden, and Wyatt. Joe was preceded in death by his sister, Susan Mento McMahon.

Joe was born in Philadelphia, PA and was the son of the late Joseph and Philomena Mento. He was raised in Abington, PA and graduated from Abington High School, Class of 1972. After high school he went to PennCo tech school. He spent his 37-year career as a bus mechanic and his last 3 years as the pool technician for Abington School District until his retirement in 2018.
 
Joe was a devoted member of Lighthouse Baptist Church in Buckingham, PA. He was a man of faith and read his Bible daily. Joe loved going to the New Jersey beaches, specifically Barnegat Light to see the lighthouse, Ol’ Barney. He took joy in gardening, maintaining his property, working on his vehicles, and spending time with family. He was known for his large vegetable garden and giving tractor rides to all the neighborhood kids.

Joe’s greatest joy was raising his daughters and becoming a pop-pop. He will be loved and missed very much.

Wesley Emerson Frey-**SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT**

Wesley Emerson Frey, 77, of Manor Township, went to be with our Lord on Sunday, May 10, 2026, at home. He was born in Manor Township, son of the late Emerson Charles and M. May Fisher Frey.

Wes served in Zimbabwe through IW Service from 1968-1970. He attended Messiah College (1970-1971) and later received his Business Degree from Millersville University in 1984. Over the years at Turkey Hill Dairy, Wes drove truck and worked various jobs in the plant and office. He initiated the Human Resources Program after becoming Vice President in 1980. After leaving Turkey Hill Dairy, he pursued several ventures which included his love of farming, as well as creating and selling his metal art.

Wes loved the outdoors, particularly farming and hunting with his dad, brothers, and son. He was an active and creative man of many talents, skilled at carpentry as well as mechanical, plumbing, and electrical repair and was a craftsman of leather and metal work. Wes was inventive, curious and resourceful, which served him well creating found art that integrated parts of farm equipment and various tools into sculptural pieces like flowers, animals, or anything else that caught his eye.

Wesley was a man of faith, and over the years served at Manor church on the board and various committees. He loved music and sang with the Lancaster men's barbershop choir chapter. He was generous and kind with neighbors from all walks of life. Wes had a heart for missions and served with Mennonite Disaster Service. He loved his Lord and his family most of all.

Wes was dearly loved by his family and is survived by his wife of 53 years, Arlene "Lena" (Thrush) Frey. Two children: Chad Frey and Lynell married to Tim Shawaryn. Three grandchildren: Megan, Jack and Benjamin. One sister: Janna married to Vince Books and one brother: Quintin married to Cheryl (Cline) Frey. He was preceded in death by two brothers: Wilson and Randall Frey.

The Memorial Service will be held at Manor Church, 530 Central Manor Road, Lancaster, on SATURDAY, JUNE 13, 2026, promptly at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor John Pletcher, officiating. Robert W. Bitner

Robert W. Bitner, 90, of Manor Township, passed away on Monday, May 4, 2026, at Hershey Medical Center. He was the husband of the late Dorothy A. Bitner, to whom he was married for 65 years before her passing on November 5, 2023. He was born in Thompsontown, son of the late Howard W. and Cletus S. Gill Bitner. Bob worked for Dana Corporation before his retirement in 2001. He was a member of Bethany EC Church of Creswell, where he taught Sunday School and served on the church board. He loved to tell stories to anyone who would listen. Bob loved and was all about his family.

He is survived by four sons: Robert (Bev) Bitner; Jeff (Cheryl) Bitner; Jim (Rachel) Bitner and Dwayne (Renee) Bitner. Eleven grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. One brother: Mike Bitner. One sister: Shelda Costello. He was preceded in death by one brother: Ross C. Kline and one sister: Arvada Christian.

Fred W. Platner

Fred W. Platner, 58, of West Hempfield Township, passed away on Sunday, April 19, 2026, at Lancaster Medical Center. He was born in Lancaster, son of the late Fred F. Platner and the late Janet M. Lapham Arnold. Fred was a heavy equipment operator for B.R. Kreider & Son, Inc. for 39 years. He was an avid sportsman, loved hunting, fishing, boating and the outdoors with friends.

Fred is survived by one sister: Karen L. (Michael E.) Byerly, Adamstown. One niece: Lynn (Jason) Shugar, Birdsboro. One nephew: Justin (Carli) Loss, Knoxville, TN. One great-niece: Sarah Shugar and one great-nephew: Jack Shugar. He was preceded in death by one sister: Kathleen M. Adams.

Ronald M. Cullison

Ronald M. Cullison, 94, of Lancaster, passed away on Sunday, April 5, 2026, at Homestead Village. He was the husband of the late Iva Jean Baldwin Cullison, to whom he was married for 67 years before she passed away on January 16, 2021. He was born in Baltimore, MD son of the late Ralph O. and Edith King Cullison. Ron worked as an industrial engineer for RCA for 22 years and Woodstream, Lititz for 12 years before his retirement. He was a graduate of Johns Hopkins University, Class of 1955, a member of the Conestoga Sertoma Club, where he served as vice-president, was a member of the American Society of Quality Control, and the Metallurgic Society. He enjoyed antiquing for many years with his wife, Iva Jean, was an avid collector of Lionel Trains and they enjoyed traveling together for many years and spending time with their family.

He is survived by his children: Debra (the late George) Myers, Lancaster; Greg (Karen) Cullison, Lititz; Suzanne Stevenson, Lancaster; and Lisa Cullison, Norristown. Six grandchildren: Laura Myers; Meggie (Abdul) Al Yahyaai; Robert (Samantha) Cullison; Joseph Cullison, Michael Cullison and Cole Stevenson. One great-granddaughter: Ella Myers. He was preceded in death by one brother: Ralph Cullison and one sister: Beatrice Patten.

Phares R. "Rod" Ray

Phares R. "Rod" Ray, 85, of West Hempfield Township, passed away on Sunday, April 5, 2026, at Hospice and Community Care, Mount Joy. He was the husband of Jewel M. Jeffers Ray, with whom he celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on October 8, 2025. He was born in Mount Joy, son of the late Phares K. and Ethel Spangler Ray. Rod was a graduate of Hempfield High School, Class of 1958, he was a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church, Mount Joy, was a manager at Elmer Musser's Excavation Company, and worked as a superintendent of East Hempfield Water Authority for 41 years before he retired in 2009.

Rod was a 25 year member of Mountville Fire Company, where he served as their building chairman. He was a member of Columbia-Middletown Elks #1074 for 35 years, the Columbia Masonic Lodge #286 F&AM for 62 years, a life member of Chickies Rock Lodge #307 of the Moose and he was also a member of numerous other social clubs. Rod loved spending time with his family and friends, hosting parties and family reunions at the Duck Shack. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing with family and friends at Little Bear Lodge, State College. He loved being outside and often could be found splitting wood at the wood pile. Rod and Jewel enjoyed traveling, visiting friends and family and doting over their grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Surviving in addition to his wife, two daughters: Cheryl L. (Charles S., Jr.) Broomell, East Petersburg and Ronda D. (Mark A.) Broomell, Millersville. Four grandchildren: Sarah (Daniel) Mann; Emily (David) Burnett; Paul (Melissa Class) Broomell and David (Karli Feaster) Broomell. Nine great-grandchildren: Daniel, Archer, Titus, Truett, Trinity, William, Eleanor, Wilson and Lenna. He was preceded in death by one infant brother: Eugene David Ray.

Michelle Kluegel

Michelle Kluegel, 65, of Landisville, passed away on Sunday, April 5, 2026. She was the wife of Ronald A. Kluegel, with whom she celebrated 15 years of marriage. She was born in San Diego, CA, daughter of Sydnie M. Gifford Gergal and the late John A. Gergal. Michelle was a retail salesperson who loved movies, animals, music, especially Frank Sinatra and was an avid sports fan.

She had a way of making people laugh, even on their worst days, and she gave so much of herself to everyone around her. We hope now she can see how many lives she touched and how much she means to all of us. We are so grateful for every moment we had with her, and will miss her more than words can say.

Randall A. "Randy" Frey, VMD

Dr. Randall A. "Randy" Frey, 69, of Millersville, passed away on Saturday, March 28, 2026. He was the husband of Paula F. Alden Frey with whom he celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary on August 16, 2025. Randy was born in Lancaster, son of the late Emerson C. and M. May Fisher Frey.

Randy was a graduate of Penn Manor High School, Class of 1974, Messiah College, Class of 1978 and the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, Class of 1984. He was a member of Refton Brethren in Christ Church where he faithfully served on various committees. Randy was co-owner of Covenant Veterinary Care in Marietta, until his retirement in 2023.

Randy will be remembered for his dedication to his faith, his family, and his field of study. His faith ran deep, and he was committed to being the hands and feet of Jesus while serving on the church board and ministering as a deacon. He worshipped in song through church choirs, the Lancaster Chorale, and hearty singing from the pew. 

Randy’s devotion to his family could be seen in how he showed up in whatever way was needed—a listening ear, a helping hand, an impassioned prayer. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren in sharing his interests and learning about theirs.

His field of study in veterinary medicine highlighted Randy’s compassionate and thoughtful nature. He strove to make everyone feel at ease and welcome from patients and their owners to his colleagues and peers.  He truly enjoyed consulting to solve even the most challenging of cases. 

Randy lived a life of example that will be greatly missed, but we rejoice in knowing he is with his Heavenly Father!

Surviving in addition to his wife, one daughter: Amanda M. Snyder, Millersville and one son: Austin A. (Brigitte) Frey, Lafayette, CO. Six grandchildren: Dax, Calvin, Daphne, Armor, Fox and Alden. Janet A. Matthews

Janet A. Matthews, 84, of Millersville, passed away on Wednesday, April 1, 2026. She was the wife of Richard G. "Dick" Matthews with whom she would have celebrated their 12th wedding anniversary on May 17, 2026, and the late Philip J. Zavalick, who passed away in 2004. Janet was born in Long Island, NY, daughter of the late William S. and Margaret Menton Hunt. She was a member of Faith Bible Fellowship Church, their AWANA, the Women's Ministry Society and was a church office volunteer.

Surviving in addition to her husband, her children: Diana M. Zavalick, Lancaster; Renee L. (Jay) Herr, Taylors, SC; David P. (Adrienne) Zavalick, Mountville; Wanda M. (John) Kilby, Lancaster and Cathy J. (Philip) Folkman, York. Nine grandchildren. Twenty great-grandchildren. Two sisters: Margaret (Alan) Hoffman, Long Island, NY and Joyce (Frank) Rozzi, Altoona, PA. She was preceded in death by five sons and two brothers: Howard and William Hunt.

Betty Jane Herr—Service Announcement

Betty Jane Herr, 90, passed from life on this earth to her heavenly reward on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at Landis Homes. She was the wife of the late Roy D. Herr whom she married on October 17, 1956. She was born in Conestoga Township, daughter of the late Daniel and Esther Leaman Shenk. Betty grew up in Lancaster County, the third of eleven children. 

In 1963, they moved to Maryland to support a new mission church. Once all of her children were in school, she worked in the school cafeteria in Montgomery County Schools in Maryland, until her retirement. She often had requests from staff for her beautifully crafted salads. She was well known in the community for her seamstress skills, and delicious cooking and baking, especially bread and donuts.

Roy and Betty returned to Lancaster County in 2009, where they enjoyed their retirement at Landis Homes. Her church community was a central part of her life, as well as her personal faith. She dedicated a time of prayer for family and friends daily. She was a member of East Petersburg Mennonite Church.

She is survived by four children: James (Carol) Herr, Mountville; Richard (Terri) Herr, Waxhaw, NC; Donna (Gary) Yoder, Kalona, IA; and Bonita (Lowell) Miller, Sellersville. Ten grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren, as well as four siblings and many loving nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by six siblings.

Robert E. Dennis, Sr.

Robert E. Dennis, Sr., 89, of Wrightsville, passed away on Saturday, March 28, 2026, at Lancaster General Hospital. He was the wife of the late Phyllis Ann Barnes Dennis who passed away on November 21, 1998. He was born in Harrisburg, son of the late Clarence and Virgie Dennis. Robert was a foreman for several area garment factories, before his retirement. He was of the methodist faith and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed playing and watching golf on TV and also enjoyed the Phillies and Eagles.

He is survived by one son: Robert E. Dennis, Jr., Wrightsville. Two grandchildren: Brittany N. (David) Van Antwerp, Wrightsville and Jackson E. Dennis-Winters, Wrightsville. One great-granddaughter: Oaklynn Mae Van Antwerp. He was preceded in death by seven siblings.

Doris A. Cook

Doris A. Cook, 89, of Columbia, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, March 22, 2026. She was born in Columbia, daughter of the late Walter and Pearl Dudley Reese. She worked as an assembler at RCA for more than forty years and also at Kahn-Lucas before her retirement. Doris was of the Methodist faith, enjoyed flowers and gardening. She was a good conversationalist and enjoyed socializing with others. Doris was an avid animal lover and Elvis fan. She loved her family, was a good mother and was a caregiver for her family and friends.

She is survived by two sons: Eric R. (Annette) Cook and Charles W. Cook (companion of Jillian Ness). One daughter: Kristine Y. (Chris) Powers. Seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and two on the way. One brother: Robert Reese. She was preceded in death by one son: James Cook. Two brothers: Kenneth Dudley and Walter "June" Reese.

Grant B. Lowry

Grant B. Lowry, 78, of St. Peter Apartments, Columbia, passed away on Sunday, March 22, 2026, at Lancaster Medical Center. He was the husband of the late Sara Lowry who passed away on October 10, 1995. Grant was born in Columbia, son of the late Bernard G. and Janet Marie Lightheiser Lowry. He was a Veteran of the US Air Force, serving during the Vietnam Conflict and was a laborer for ITT Grinnell before his retirement.

Grant is survived by his companion: Ruth S. Walstrum.

Mildred A. "Millie" Leaman Hess Shue, 104, of Mountville, passed away on Saturday, March 21, 2026. She was the wife of the late Clarence Hess, who passed away in 1967 and also the wife of the late Harrison Shue, who passed away in 1995. Millie was born in Marietta, daughter of the late John R. and Jennie Sweigart Leaman. 

Millie was a graduate of Columbia High School, Class of 1939. She took numerous banking courses through Franklin & Marshall evening school. She was employed by Fulton Bank, Mountville in various positions for 27 years and was a member of the Quarter Century Club. Millie was the oldest member of Central Manor Church and loved spending time with family and friends. She enjoyed cooking and crocheting for her family.

She is survived by four children: John J. (Bonnie) Hess, Gettysburg; Georgia Hess Fry, Washington Boro; Twyla Hess LaVoie, Maine and Beth Hess (Tom) Kitzmiller, York. Eleven grandchildren: Jennie Hess Brown, Josephine Hess Riser, Jayne Hess Sebright, Joy Hess Widerman, Jolyn Fry, Rebecca Fry, Sarah Fry, Aaron Fry, Daniel LaVoie, Samuel Kitzmiller and Benjamin Kitzmiller. Twenty-two great-grandchildren. Six great-great-grandchildren and one on the way. She was preceded in death by one daughter: Jennie Hess in 1958, at age 12. One grandson: John R. Hess, in 2025. Two brothers: J. Lloyd and Warren Leaman. One sister: Verna Leaman Murry.

Mildred's children and their families are thankful to John Hostetter, Jr., for taking care of their mother in her last years.

Betty L. Davenport-CHANGE OF SERVICE

Betty L. Davenport, 81, of Lancaster, formerly of Talmage, passed away in the presence of her loving family, on the first day of Spring, Friday, March 20, 2026. She was the wife of the late Robert L. Davenport, Sr. Betty was born in Hershey, daughter of the late Marlin and Mildred E. Bruce Fink. She worked in environmental services at St. Joseph Hospital for 32 years before her retirement.

Betty enjoyed flowers, music, especially Blue Grass, dancing, doing the Jitterbug with her sisters, camping with her grandchildren and roasting marshmallows at the campfire. She always had a smile on her face for everyone.

She is survived by her children: Robert L. (Dawn) Davenport, Jr.; Lucinda M. (Chris) Fulmer and Richard E. (Tracy) Davenport. Ten grandchildren. Seven great-grandchildren and one on the way. Four brothers and five sisters. She was preceded in death by six siblings.

Harold Millhouse Kilheffer

Harold Millhouse Kilheffer, 96, formerly of Manor Township, passed away on Friday, March 13, 2026, at Masonic Village. He was the husband of Nora Mae Shaub Kilheffer with whom he would have celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary on June 9, 2026. He was born in Manor Township, son of the late Abram K. and Minnie H. Millhouse Kilheffer.

Harold spent most of his life in the Millersville area. He was a farmer and worked for Martin's Hatchery for 40 years before his retirement. He was the oldest member of East Chestnut Street Mennonite Church. Harold's hobbies included gardening, flowers and Bonsai Trees. Genealogy was an interest of Harold's and Nora Mae's. They spent a lot of time researching both of their families, including a trip to Germany and Switzerland, which allowed them to trace their family history.

Surviving in addition to his wife, his children: Kenneth (Sharon) Kilheffer, Waco, TX; Patricia (Gerald) Yoder, Belleville and Cynthia (Michael) Hudson, Rapho Township. Five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son: Harold Richard Kilheffer and three brothers: Victor, John and Paul Kilheffer.

The Memorial Service will be held at East Chestnut Street Mennonite Church, 432 East Chestnut Street, Lancaster on Saturday, March 21, 2026, at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor Todd Friesen, officiating.
